Underrated - Mick Quinn of Supergrass - comes up with simple but memorable stuff. Actually, the entire band is underrated in my opinion.

Overrated - Slap bass.

P.S. Wooten is a seriously talented musician, but his tunes don't do much for me.

I'd agree with that too. Had an influence on me, I must say. I really like the chunky bass he's been playing for a fair few years now, but don't know what make it is.
Now I've said that, I think he's also using an Epiphone Jack Casady occasionally:
Aha - it's something like that Epiphone but all-black. Wasn't sure if was hollow-bodied or not...

Anyway, I like Simon Gallup. Over-rated? Under-rated? Don't know. Don't care. :)
Underrated- Paul Jackson. The bass line in Chameleon is not only one of the greatest of all time, but also one of the most recognisable intros to an album
Paul Jackson is great, but the Chameleon intro was Herbie on Synth. Paul Jackson plays a
thing high up the neck, starting about 8 bars in.

Protect Status Quo? Are they under threat of extinction?

If you consider me a village elder then I'll offer you this. What I want in any discussion is for people to distinguish between what they like and what is good, and similarly what they dislike and what is not good. Just because you don't like something does not render it bad. I'm afraid opinions don't come into that as certain elements of what is good are not debatable you can argue their relative merits or whether they are fit for purpose but that is a different conversation.
If somebody decides to be condemning of something without recourse to reason, whether I'm considered a "village elder" (which is a childish definition) or not I will utilise my right which carries exactly proportionate weight to yours to try to bring a little balance to the debate. What you don't see the "Village Elders" doing is making sniping little remarks which achieve little more than to create a divided bad feeling in the thread.
If you don't want to hear the views of people be they "Village Elders" or some such other imagined splinter group of basschatters then don't read on.

Absolutely 100% my thoughts on this thread and the millions like them on the interweb... perfectly illustrating the futility and pointlessness of saying "loads of people think X is briliant, but I don't, therefore they are massively overated..." it just doesn't stack up, people love to dis Jaco but whether you like the guy's music or not there are enough people out there, like Joni Mitchell, Pat Metneny and Wayne Shorter, who will attest to his genius, as well as his failings and flaws, all these people are human beings too. Re 'maintaining the status quo' not quite sure what that entails either, should we all fall in line and agree that certain styles or techniques are acceptable and others aren't? I think BC is a very tolerant place and there's room for every POV here, but provocative rants based on pure opinion to get a reaction are just plain annoying, if it's meant as a joke then cool, but this thread is typically how these 'debates' pan out, i.e. going round in circles and achieving pretty much f*** all.

Perhaps it may be better just to have - if one doesn't exist already - a thread dedicated to bass players who might not be known to others and may be of interest? No-one is ever going to agree on who is better or best or worst because it's wildly subjective.

Stan stammers truely underated, hasnt been very successful since the early 90's though. Clip from 81, just after billy duffy from the cult left ( the singers voice is not to everyones taste) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuYPGZm7fwI

Deserves a mention: Mr Kai Eckhardt

- Kai is a fantastic player, yet never seems to get the mentions he deserves among the other "greats" of Fusion bass playing like Jonas Hellborg, Stuart Hamm, Jaco, Stanley, etc etc. Kai has quietly worked away on many projects over the years which have come to typically little acclaim between bassists circles, and yet he is an immensely talented player. Kai is able to move between so many genres and yet retain that musical quality which is uniquely his. The basslines he creates present the listener with brilliance on so many levels. He crafts his sense of melody into every line, and every phrase is informed by his extensive grasp of konokol (Indian rhythm patterns). He is superbly talented and technically gifted yet grooves absolutely. Not only is he an awesome player but he is a fantastic guy. We have exchanged emails in the past and he has always been friendly and willing to offer advice. Top guy and a top player!

Kai brings the funk to fusion:

Kai shows off his chops:

Kai in an awesome fretless jam: (check out 00:25 seconds to 00:50 seconds!)

Overrated: John Taylor.

-I understand that now some sing the praises of John feeling that he has been hard done by in the past, but really I see nothing of note in his lines, especially since Bernie Edwards did a lot of his stuff in the studio for Powerstation!
