Did anyone catch the documentary on BBC4 tonight about Joe Zawinul?
The bass player in his band - Linley Marthe http://yaplog.jp/linleymarthe/ - was scary good - playing a lovely battered old early 70's Jazz bass...
Lots of great close-ups of his playing. Hopefully it will get repeated...

Great video clip of him here: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iz4FKN2x7gY

He's good but the music drove me up the wall after about 2 minutes :)

I saw the last 20 minutes and although not my *usual* choice of listening, I found the program compelling and totally absorbing. I wish I'd seen the start as well.
Joe strikes me as the sort of person I'd have loved to have sat down with a strong drink and listen to. Had some good stuff to tell.

Linley's playing was very cool! It's rare for us bass players to get that kinda *EXTREME CLOSE UP* on TV! ;o) It was so cole you could see the dirt round the bridge pieces!!

Caught it about halfway through. When I saw the bass I thought 'uh-oh, maybe he feels obliged to do a Jaco thing just cos of who he's playing with' but he has a style of his own and appears totally effortless, very impressive. The bass was fretted anyway so we'll let him off :)

Good wasn't it? Cracking band, but I agree not the easiest material to listen too.
I miss Weather Report. Shame about Joe's passing.
There is a transcription of Havona in last months Bass Player mag. Now that's what happens when the bass player writes a tune!
Wish I could play more than a couple of bars of it. One day perhaps???

+1

I didn't think I'd be that interested but just tuned it to have a look ...
and got absorbed by a great bit of TV.

Despite amp and/or cable problems and delayed flights, Linley played a storming set at bass day 2005. I'd be mightily impressed if he was invited back again.

Always been a weather report fan so I was pretty upset to hear about Zawinul's passing. The programme was a repeat but watched anyway - I'd have loved to have seen the syndicate play.

I second that!!! At first I thought it was actually a Jaco tribute bass with the 'distressed look' or soemthing but then noticed the jumbo neck inlays and was like...ok then. His playing was technically fantastic although there was something i couldn't quite get about him, couldn't put my finger on it at all.
I very mcuh enjoyed Tower of Silence. I also only caught the second half actually, a good mainstream example of the wisdom joe had accumilated over the years i think. Good stuff, more of that good stuff please BBC!!
