EJWW Posted Saturday at 06:53 Posted Saturday at 06:53 First time I've managed to see them live after many years of enthusiastically following them and Louis Cole. I wasn't disappointed! Brilliant musicians, all of them, exhillerating performance too, crowd were bouncing by the end. Sam Wilkes was a big fat monster on bass. Had to resist the urge to keep videoing bits on my phone (one of my pet hates at gigs) but it was such a great show. I don't know why but I felt the urge to take a pic of Sam's bass at the end of the show, perhaps someone out there would be interested 😂 7 Quote
Woodwind Posted Saturday at 10:45 Posted Saturday at 10:45 I would love to catch them live. Always had to work late when they have come to London over the last few years. Glad you enjoyed the show! 1 Quote
Owen Posted Sunday at 22:28 Posted Sunday at 22:28 I would also love to see them live. I am writing here in the hope that next time they spin by someone will comment here and I will see it in time to get tickets. 2 Quote
Ruarl Posted yesterday at 07:23 Posted yesterday at 07:23 Sam Wilkes was with them?! I saw them at BotW a couple of years ago, and it was just Louis and Genevive. It was a fun show, but felt a bit lacking compared to the stuff they have been publishing online recently. (Obviously I understand it's expensive to move more and more musicians and gear....) I was kinda expecting this gig to be the same as all the promotion I saw didn't mention that it would be anything else. How big was the band this time? 1 Quote

It was louis and gienevive plus Sam on bass, a keys player and a guitarist. When I saw Tower of Power in Brum a few years ago I was doubly disappointed to find (in my complete ignorance) that not only was Rocco deceased but his replacement was also absent due to a medical indent so in the end there was no bass player on stage at all. 1 Quote
cheddatom Posted yesterday at 09:07 Posted yesterday at 09:07 (edited) Yeh, amazing gig, although I thought it could have been louder, which is a first for me! Sam Wilkes is amazing but the keys player really stood out to me. Incredible solos I've seen Louis Cole in various guises a few times. I am very into drums and drummers. He has the machine-like chops of JoJo Mayer but with the groove and feel of Benny Greb. It seems to me he's renowned in jazz circles but you don't see him mentioned in drummer circles very much at all. Absolutely incredible musician. Edited yesterday at 10:38 by cheddatom 2 Quote

I saw that Tower of Power before Rocco died, but he was unwell enough to miss the gig. There was no stand in for that gig either. One could charitably suggest he was irreplaceable, perhaps? 1 Quote
Ruarl Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago (edited) @cheddatom I agree about Louis Cole. A really singular musician, I think. Similarly, how often does Thundercat come up on this forum? In Knower's "Live Sesh" youtube videos Rai Thistlethwayte is the keys player. He is an absolute monster. Was it him? If so, I'm more gutted to have missed him than Sam Wilkes! Wild solos ahead: Edited 5 hours ago by Ruarl 1 Quote

I feel a bit harsh by not being able to at least share his name. I'm sure someone can find out... I saw Thundercat last year in Wolverhampton and he was fabulous also. Quote
