Chienmortbb Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago (edited) I have watched this twice now and although it is biased towards guitars, the fundamentals work for bass too. https://youtu.be/wcBEOcPtlYk?si=otak2Z475-79ypb- Jim Lill is a professional guitarist based in Nashville and although no electronic engineer he does use a vigorous way of testing things. His other videos on cabs and mis are also worth watching. Watch the whole video and post your comments on it below. Please keep an open mind. Edited 14 hours ago by Chienmortbb 2 Quote
ezbass Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago I like Jim, I discovered him when he did his ‘where does tone in a guitar come from?’ video. This amp one is more of the same, but this time I already knew the answer. I talked to the amp specialist in Chandler’s about the difference in tubes and the tonal differences we hear between Marshall and Fender guitar amps. He told me that it was actually mostly about the placement of the tone stack in the circuit and this video demonstrates that perfectly. The name of that tech? Brinsley Schwarz (yes that Brinsley Schwarz), he’s an amp nut. This whole thing certainly questions the whole SS vs Valves argument, but that’s what Jim does, he challenges perceived thinking and marketing. He’s a pretty tasty player too. Quote
Beedster Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago He’ll be telling us that all basses sound the same next. Great vid 👍 Quote
Chienmortbb Posted 8 hours ago Author Posted 8 hours ago I must admit he goes to great lengths to get to the answers. Watch his cabinet video it is insane but again informative. Quote

It was a nice piece and no doubt accurate and useful. Will it make me think twice about using tube amps? Hell no! And I'm pretty sure the word 'heft' wasn't even mentioned 🤣 Quote
chyc Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago It's a really interesting video. Tallies with the Andertons blind shootout that they did at roughly the same time. Quote
