petebassist Posted July 15 Posted July 15 (edited) Anyone got tips about getting a decent sound when playing along to songs? I put my double bass & electric bass clips on my Instagram channel, but I record video on my iPhone with the song playing through a speaker and my bass playing through an amp, so I pick up extra fretboard and string noise (I know this is less than perfect technique causing extra noise). I've got an iMac and GarageBand, but I don't know how to get a clean digital sound through that to mix with the backing song and the video footage. Would I have to use iMovie to put the three things together? Thanks Edited July 15 by petebassist Quote
Owen Posted July 15 Posted July 15 You will need an interface to get your bass audio in there. A pickup is less ffaff than a mic. Audio interfaces are cheap on FB marketplace. You will need to have some sort of syncing noise/visual so you can glue audio and video together in iMovie You will need to spend 3 or 4 hours on a "teach yourself Garage Band" YT series. It is far from rocket science, but if you just pile in and hope for the magic after 10 minutes you are destined for Dissapoinment Central. 2 1 Quote
mattpbass Posted July 16 Posted July 16 When I messed around with this during Covid I initially did the above, recording the audio and video through different means and then having to stitch together, was a right faff, but then I discovered this handy device - https://www.roland.com/global/products/gomixer/ - basically just plug it into your phone and plug your bass into it and you’re good to go. Sounds like this - https://www.instagram.com/p/CRrLGJrCewa/?igsh=MWU4MTBxcXYwM21jaA== 3 Quote

I'm pretty handy with Garage Band and I have an audio interface, but as you say the stitching is a faff. Many thanks 1 Quote
mattpbass Posted July 16 Posted July 16 Just realised the one I linked isn’t the one I’ve got, I’ve got this one - https://www.roland.com/us/products/gomixer_pro-x/ 2 Quote
jonno1981 Posted July 16 Posted July 16 I’m going to try one of these as well. Thanks for the advice. 1 Quote

I found a couple of used ones on eBay, but I think the new version is https://www.roland.com/us/products/gomixer_pro-x/. A bit more expensive but I'm thinking about new version - as well as the IG stuff, it would be great for creating live performance promo clips for a couple of bands that I'm involved in. 1 Quote
fretmeister Posted July 17 Posted July 17 I had been doing them with a very janky sort of approach that was made very annoying by iOS refusing to mix my interface together properly. My woes are here: https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/509698-ios-video-app-audio-stupidity-work-round/ I solved it with far more cables than I ever wanted to use! Sounded ok though: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DGI_tSFswQC/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== I've since got a Line 6 HX Stomp which solves all the problems with far fewer cables - apart from a mains cable. I was using a powered board in that vid but I really wanted something more portable that I could go direct with just a battery powered compressor pedal. Then I could sit in the garden with my headphones and play along too. So this new Roland unit seems to be a great idea for a battery powered option. I then trimmed the video using the free version of Capcut. It's pretty good! 1 Quote

MrDinsdale Posted July 17 Posted July 17 I recently realised I can use the boss Katana:Go connected via USB to my iphone to record my bass directly in the camera app. It wouldn't record the AUX in though so you'd still need to sync up to the backing track audio. It'd probably be less faffy than syncing video to audio though. Quote
MrDinsdale Posted July 17 Posted July 17 PS same works with my Scarlett 2i2, you could use one channel for bass and the other for the mono backing track perhaps? Quote
jonno1981 Posted July 24 Posted July 24 Well I ordered a “used very good” condition model from Amazon for £90 and it’s arrived missing the box, manual and all the cables. Grrrrr. I’m thankful their returns are so easy! I’ll get it back then look around for another one. Quote

Sounds so good through massive studio monitors! Great playing! Quote

jonno1981 Posted August 6 Posted August 6 I’m getting to grips with a Roland pro mixer x. Annoyingly, this has just been released and looks like a good new alternative. It doesn’t offer multiple inputs, but has a good internal mic and some effects through an app. https://blackstaramps.com/polargo/ Quote
petebassist Posted August 6 Author Posted August 6 I have a Roland arriving next week, and I plan to use it for band demos as well so hopefully the extras will be useful. Quote
