Faithless Posted Friday at 19:15 Posted Friday at 19:15 (edited) I've found this stereo Radial JDI passive stereo DI available. Would that noticeably improve my active bass & Moog Little Phatty's live sound instead of using my HX Stomp's balanced outs? I know Stomp has pretty damn good outs already. If's it will give like 10% margin difference tops, I don't wanna bother. I play lots of live and I'm always afraid running Stomp's DI to get Phantom power fed and Stomp fried.. Thank you. Sibob Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago (edited) Because the Stomps balanced outs are only 1/4”, you’re likely connecting it to the Line In of a desk, which doesn’t receive Phantom Power. Even if you’re using a TS -> XLR cable, because the pins are not exactly the same, what the HX Stomp then receives in the way of phantom power isn’t damaging, although I’ve heard it ruins the tone/signal. All that to say that you’ll HEAR that PP is on before you do any damage. That said I’d always consider adding a DI box to a small Stomp pedalboard purely because then I’m not relying on finding/carrying a fairly specialist TS -> XLR cable and can simply rely on bog-standard XLR cables. So why not run the JDI after your Stomp, best of both worlds and great mini board! My backup setup for a while, need to replace the Stagebug at some point as it was on loan: Si Edited 21 hours ago by Sibob 1 Quote
Faithless Posted 17 hours ago Author Posted 17 hours ago (edited) Thanks for detailed reply, Sibob. Well, as a matter of fact, I do have TS -> XLR cables custom made for running DI out of Stomp! 4 hours ago, Sibob said: Even if you’re using a TS -> XLR cable, because the pins are not exactly the same, what the HX Stomp then receives in the way of phantom power isn’t damaging, although I’ve heard it ruins the tone/signal. Overall, I hear it kind of defeats the necessity of obtaining such a DI, merely because of the groundloop function it wins against Stomp's DI.. PS What a lovely board you got there! walshy Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago I run the JDI after the stomp too, makes the sound engineer happier 1 Quote

It would have to be trs to be balanced. I always used a trs>xlr adaptor cable when I was the soundman, because I trust me. Whenever I had someone else on the desk I always used a separate di but that was more about isolation and phantom power protection than sound. The stomp sounded great. Quote

All that to say that you’ll HEAR that PP is on before you do any damage I've read the the same thing here and there, and always along the lines of "it degrades the sound" but with no specifics. I've just tested my Stomp with phantom power from my audio interface, and it sounded the same to me either way 🤷♂️. It also didn't explode, which was nice! Depending on stage layout and who's providing the bass amp, I sometimes use a short TRS - XLR cable, and other times an Orchid Electronics DI box Quote
