His name's Braylon Lacy, his feel and sound are just amazing. Old P-Bass and flatwounds are his usual recording choice. If you're into your James Jamerson meets hip-hop/funk, then you'll love it! Lately I've been listening to her Worldwide Underground album with Bray Lon Lacy dropping some gloupy grooves. To me neo-soul is just pure stripped down groove-drums, keys, bass, vocals, and POCKET!! I listened to some others quickly with a view to buying them soon but got a bit turned off by the slightly more 'electric' direction - drum machines and so on. I read somewhere that she stopped working with that bassist because she didn't like his ora/vibe??! I went to see her live in Brixton Academy around this time last year and although she was great, I don't think I've ever witnessed such an awful bass sound in my life; it was 100 percent pure sub and no tone. It completely killed all of her older material for me. If she's still using that bassist now I don't think I'll bother seeing her again... Funkmaster Posted June 9, 2009 Share Posted June 9, 2009 (edited) Saw her at Montreux Jazz Festival about 7 years ago. She's certainly a dynamic performer. I mainly went to that gig because it was in the (Smoke on the Water) Casino and it was the last gig in there before it was being closed and gutted for refurb. The energy of the gig really pulled me in though and by the end I loved it. Incidentally Ms Badu became increasingly less dressed as the gig progressed as a result of repeated and extensive crowd surfing. Sadly, though, she never made it up on to the balcony! I've been trying to find some footage of her playing at Dave Chappelle's 'Block Party' in Brooklyn with Braylon Lacy, he pulls out the sickest groove on his P-Bass, but I just can't find it! If I have to listen to R&B / Soul I prefer Jill Scott's stuff myself, seems a bit more sure of what she's doing. But really I find all that music a bit too quiet. It appears to be an 'official' bootleg. I just downloaded it and the first nine tracks are taken from the Vh1 special I linked to above. Two tracks are taken from the official Baduism Live album with the final tracks taken from another unknown concert. The recording quality on the first nine tracks is perfect and the band are on fire . Highly recommended just for these tracks alone! Jay.
