Spotting an original neck finish - Fender Musicmaster

Recommended Posts

I've recently purchased as 1978 Fender Musicmaster with the plan of cleaning it up and turning it back into a gigging bass. For the most part, I can tell what's original and what isn't, however I have no idea with the neck finish. I was wondering if there's any obvious ways of telling, and if anyone here may be able to shed a little light.

Anyway, here's the bass in question

Hi, purely from that pic it looks like a refin to me. My Musicmaster neck was stripped and stained dark so isn’t a helpful comparison but my early 70s P is lighter and smoother but with plenty of age related dings.

+1  Looks like it has a vintage tint to me. The neck finish on my Musicmaster is much paler. Couple of pics below for comparison

Looks nice as-is!  Maybe pop a machine head off - if the colour is the same underneath it’s a tint, if it looks like tan lines it could be original?

The neck on my '71 MM looks like Ikay's (above), just a tad darker.

I had a '78 Musicmaster and neck was pretty much exactly like that in the OP.  Lovely dark caramel colour.  Why did  sell it?
