Guest BassKS Posted July 23, 2008 Share Posted July 23, 2008 Hey everyone, I bought a P Bass recently from some guy in New Zealand. The bass is MIJ 90-91 with the usual stock pickup. Now im used to Warwick Streamer St I, Corvette (EMGs and Aguilar) and Stingray so I wanted something passive with that Jamerson goodness. So I took the bass to a band practise and the drummer couldnt hear me. I couldnt hear me either.... I put it down to low output pickups and am seriously looking for an upgrade. There is a lot out there but i do want something punchy (not quarter pounders please). Any help please? Am considering the following passives: Bartolinis (P J if required) EMGs Dimarzio DP 127 (PJ) SD Antiquity ...... WOuld appreciate any help on choosing and installing... Of course i would pay in cash or gear that i do not use, I would even do all the cooking for a bbq ( im a mean outdoors chef) if youre organizing one :-P. Any reply would help.... Dr.Dave Posted July 23, 2008 Share Posted July 23, 2008 I'd suggest you speak to Wizard too. They can rewind your existing pup to your specs. The SD antiquities will sound great as vintage pups but not sure they'll cut the band any better. SD do a 'Hot' I believe - not quite a QP but supposed to have more low end response and attack. Rayman Posted July 25, 2008 Share Posted July 25, 2008 Well I'm one of the few SD Quarterpounder fans around, and highly recommend them. I've got one in my Schecter Model T, and have had one in a MIM P bass in the past, and totally love them, power and punch in spades. Don't know about Wizards, never had one, but the ones I've heard have been brighter than the QP in basses I've tried. They were teh first ones to do the whole replacement thing back in the seventies and do sound pretty cool. I did have the DP123 (humbuckers with in line coils covering two strings per coil) on a Jazz bass and it sounded pretty sweet. Dont know about the Precision one and how far would the sound be from the original one... I really dig the sound of the Existing pickup except that it is very low output and not particularly mid punchy. I also tried raising the pickup but it started giving these high mids and overtones that became a bit too much for me. Bartolinis on the other hand are pretty useless without a preamp in that they are quieter due to their construction (cast in Bakelite) EMGs is what everyone talks about but they are still active... My P bass has got modded pickups but I find it still doesn't have the bite that an active bass does. You might be better off trying out a pre-amp pedal like an Aphex Bass Xciter or a SansAmp which will make the sound hotter. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The SD sounds big and loud, the DiMarzio sounds warmer and fuller. The SD to my ears is the louder, the DiMarzio has the better tone.
