Just got an EBS Multi Comp and would strongly recommend it - excellent compressor.

Which one do ya prefer, guys? I'm looking after a bit of compression, but dunno what's really worth choosing, so, waitin' for opinions..
That's a strange list of the three best comps IMHO

Mine top 5 would include the Demeter Compulator, EBS Multicomp, Trace Elliot's dual-band comp, Monte Allum's modded CS3 + one other.

Although I'm now loking for a rackmount one.

Me too, but we would say that - we've bought them. :) Top bit of kit the EBS, had it for a while and it does indeed make my sound [s]less sh*t[/s] much tighter, just like compresors should!

Omg, I've wrote this to wrong forum... Sorry for that. Ped, can you put it into Effects forum?

Well, Clauster, I meant, there are only 3 simulations of compressors, put in XT Live, and I'm looking after using one of them... I'm not saying, they're best, simply wanna know, which is worth attention most..

Oh I see!! Well I find the Vetta the best but none of them are very good in my opinion. The 'master' compressor on the front panel however is absolutely brilliant, very transparent and clear.

I didn't get on with the SMX dual comp personally, I found it quite harsh and obvious sounding. Useful as an effect maybe, but not something I would want on all the time.

I will move the post!
What the hell 'double' compressing is needed for, huh?.. :)
They describe a setup like that in the manual, when I had a PodXT I tried it out and it actually sounds really good with a little tweaking.. it wasn't really overcompressed like you'd imagine, the PodXT compressors are quite transparent (maybe too transparent) and I managed to get a really nice clean sound from it.

Umm...

Well, you can see those two "Gate" knobs on the right in the panel, when you, for eg., are trying to adjust "front panel" compressor's amount, dig it, mate? :)

So, that "Gate" has two parameters, one is "Threshold", the other is "Decay". I'm curious, how the last one is working with 'thresh'...

Ah ok... well the easiest way to think about the noise gate is like a door that opens and closes to let certain things through. Thresh is the volume the signal has to be for the door to open, and decay is how quickly the door shuts afterwards. For example, set with a very high thresh and zero decay the bass will only sound when it is very loud, when the signal starts to drop the door will slam closed and there will be no sustain. It can be very useful to set this for driving synths.

To be honest I don't like noise gates on a clean signal because I think they make any noise more noticeable but if you set it JUST RIGHT you can literally do away with any hiss.

Well, sometimes, when I gotta play in non-earthed area, I'm trying to kill that 'hiss', coming from the amp, but, then, I realised, that my sound sustain is quite short...

My current settings on Gate are: [Thresh]- -50dB; [Decay]- 20%...

Think, I'd tweak 'em, right?..

Depends on your bass and playing style. Not just to be annoyingly vague, but it really does! You need to have the 'door' or decay set just right so that it allows the trailing end of the note to pass through but starts to shut when the hiss overtakes the bass sound for volume. To me, 20% is about right (I use it on my Musicman Vbass patch but the thresh is at 37% - but then I play very lightly)

To be honest if you use it sparingly it should not be noticeable at all in the mix when listened to solo - and it will be very hard to detect in the context of a mix or live song. Just be careful that the threshold isn't too high and the decay too low otherwise you will hear a distorting of the decaying note as the door slams shut and cuts it short - again, an interesting effect for driving synths and so on.

If you are getting lots of hiss without the gate switched on you might want to see if the problem can be solved before it hits the pod. I get no hiss in the studio or live but do use the gate at home because of very light hum produced from my TV and so on which is picked up especially on the fretless which is usually played with the bridge single coil on full!

Hope this helps
