Lazy Git wants to repaint a bass body -advice please.

Long story short, can anyone help please?

No2 son rescued a 1990s Legend JB from a skip. It had been in the North Sea on a video shoot.

The neck is like an over ripe banana, the pickups and electrics are f8cked.

I have a spare fretless neck what fits and enough bits in my spares box to make a usable bass.

Now, I would like to repaint the body which is black to the red/gold old Framus sunburst.

I'm a lazy git and cannot be bothered to strip all of the PU/epoxy paint off the body (not worth it IMHO).

Can I get away with smoothing the existing paint down, prime it, then spray and over laquer it accordingly?

Which primer / undercoat / paints do I use?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thank you.

final coat and appearance will only be as good as the prep you put into the base coats

how about get some good quality wrapping vinyl? easy enough to apply (with a bit of practice - plenty of vids on youtube to see how its done and get some spare vinyl to practice before the final run)

easy to change too if you decide you dont like the colour/finish

If a Framus sunburst is one where the wood grain shows through the yellow then you will have to strip the paint back to the wood. The 'yellow' of many sunbursts is not usually a solid colour.

If a quick fix is required I would suggest flattening the existing coat and overspraying with a can of Plastikote enamel. As your base colour is black, choose a colour that works over black e.g. solid red.

If you really want a burst, take it to a specialist. It's not as easy as one might think. :)
