Mark King is not to my taste either, much prefer Marcus if I have to listen to slap.
And I find Marcus to be repetitive. He plays a great groove but it's the same groove in 3 different tempos in 3 different keys. Go figure. No one is beyond criticism. But it's nice to just appreciate people making art.

Fair enough that you like them!

The first video made me so upset that I had to stop 22 seconds in, almost immediately I had to put on the original record to remind myself why no one should ever try to tap it out on a bass and why it is such a brilliant standalone Macca track (can't improve on a masterpiece, just IMO).

The second I was pretty indifferent to, fair enough if people like it, it wasn't offensive but it is times like that I would personally reach for a guitar as I don't bass fills the role even half as well.
1st vid made me turn off at 7 secs

oh dear... that makes for great evidence that bass should always be used in a band context!
That made me curious, so I found examples of each of them in a band context.

It doesn't sound good to me. It sounds more like a bassist showing off just how good they are at playing bass rather than showing off how good they are at music.

I watched a Scott Devine video recently where he said he didn't like teaching slap because people get stuck there, and don't learn how to play harmonically. In my personal opinion, a lot of solo bass players go too far the other way. I don't find much interesting about a bass on its own, but within the context of a band, a good bassline is a fantastic thing, outside of a band, it's just a guy playing a bass, and nobody is really interesting in that, not even most bassists, obviously.

That's what I thought when I watched this........ but being from a music show I was maybe put off by the bloke next to him trying out a drum kit & playing a different tune.

Well, Feraud, according to the Mr. Jeff Berlin, is, at the moment, the cleanest & fastest player around, to which I certainly agree:

That's why i don't like jazz. You can literally play whatever the f*** you want, and it's alright. You'll get approval from the jazz fans. Made a mistake? Make it again so it looks like you did it on purpose - More approval.

I don't really understand jazz, but I understand enough to know this isn't true.

What part isn't true? Some of it is exaggeration. But i know that if a jazz musician makes a mistake when improvising, they will just repeat it in a "Yeah, i meant to do that" kind of way.

Going rather off the original subject here, but as I mentioned Jaco earlier, if you're doubling up with the likes of Joe Zawinal and Wayne Shorter you do not have any space for mistakes. These guys absolutely know their stuff and there are no short cuts to being able to play like this. You'll notice how the bass and keys are doubling with what may to some sound like random notes.

I've played with a couple of jazz players, did this morning with this chap: http://www.andrewnoble.org/default.html He's a phenomenal musician and there's absolutely nothing that goes unintentionally. I certainly can't keep with him.

Yep, we all have an opinion and most importantly we should be able to appreciate someone's ability even if not to our own taste.

But how would you know? He would just make it seem like it wasn't a mistake.

Definition of jazz - they all play together and it sounds so bad they each do a solo to prove it's not their fault!
........ and always had them down as jokes rather than any kind of actual fact or anything near it; same as drummer jokes - it must be a pi**er being a jazz drummer then. My own fave is "definition of a jazz band? Five blokes playing five different tunes in a race to see who can finish first".

I'm in the "bass isn't really a solo instrument camp, but I do appreciate demonstrations of playing ability on any instrument if it is actually entertaining & enjoyable, not overlong & if on a bass - sounds like a bass - & not an accident in a piano wire factory (ie slap).

I was reliably informed by the drummer on this track that it was done in one take - personally I like overdriven bass sounds........

I was told this in all seriousness by a friend who studied jazz at a music college. He wasn't taking the piss, he was teaching a group of us some improv techniques.
