How about Elixir strings, there coated and claim to last 3-5 times longer........I got them with my new Ibanez and its a reg size and its not bad, more expensive though. Mainly I use rotosounds Hybrid 40-125, cheap and bright. Its all down to personal taste.

What make are considered high quality strings ?

I like DR Sunbeams, and while i have no experience of TI (Thomastik/Infeld) Jazz rounds, I have read great reviews about them.
Both have low tension, especially the TI's.

I have always used D'Addario strings on my guitars and have just replaced the strings on both my 4 & 5 string basses with D'Addario EXL 160.
They have never once disappointed me.

To each their own, but I much prefer the smoother feel and slightly mellower tone of DR's over D'Addarios.

I would suggest D'addarios as a decent quality with a variety of gauges..that will clean up well enough if you are careful with the winds.
XL Pros is SS are a good start point, IMO

In my 12-18 months of testing..I would put these in my best 5 that I used and the price is ok.

I've had a few Bass Collections and I found that Elites were the best sounding strings for me. You didn't say whether it was a 4 or 5 but on the 5s I had I used the Nathan East set which were 47s

Having said that Optima golds sounded really good on the fretless
