I really like the look / idea of that Catalinbread SFT! Will check it out on youtube tonight, I'm looking for something to give a little bit of valvey grind without being really gnarly (a bit like the bass sound at the start of chelsea dagger if that makes sense)...

The Lomenzo is absolutely superb sounding but does way more than I need, I'd rather have something that just does the job I want 'really well' so I'm using it in its' sweet spot rather than tickling a pedal that can do loads more than I'm asking it to

...and where have you found the best price on an SFT?
The Lomenzo Hyperdrive certainly tempted me... but it's got such a hoofing great footprint! Haven't the space for it...
I'm getting my SFT from Toneworld in Manchester, since getting the Low Drive from them.. Postage is free & they are very helpful & quick. Their price on the SFT is £145 ...which is pretty good for new.

I reckon the SFT can do the Chelsea Dagger thing!

Thanks matey!

Hyperdrive indeed not little but sounds great...v cheap too comparatively!

It certainly 'reads' like it will 'nail it' to me! Free postage may swing it, same price as guitarguitar otherwise...will try to catch any youtube action for it this evening

My suggestion (to OP and anyone else for that matter) is that you have a good lurk in the For Sale section on here. I got my BB Preamp for a steal and I love it - a great replacement for my Fulltone Bassdrive.

Lurking now

this is absolutely the ballsey valvey grindy pedal to have IMO, especially when you run it at 18v; then it kick ass even more with plenty more headroom. It works great for guitar too.

the only thing that i've found that tops it on guitar is a Butler Tube Driver with the bias adjustment control http://www.butleraudio.com/
I haven't tried the Butler on bass yet tho.......I've gone AWOL from bass for a while and am playing 6 strings more than 4 these days.....sorry!

The Tube Driver is a great pedal but was never designed for use with a bass. I've not used the Tube Driver but do have a Real Tube and a Blue Tube rack. The RT does lose some bottom end, though that was never a problem for me as I've always gone for bags of low mids over much real bass. Used it for ages until... the rest of the band asked for more bass in my sound.

By that point I'd picked up a Blue Tube rack, which was intended for bass. It was a better choice for me as it did the low drive thing much better - the RT could get pretty hairy as you turned up the drive. It has the bias control which is sadly lacking from the original pedals, and as you doubtless know it is a real killer of a feature as it changes the whole character of the distortion. Why no other manufacturers have done the same thing is beyond me, though I did mention it to Dave Hall and he said that BK Butler's implementation of it was very tricky to pull off. It's capable of lovely creamy, fat sounding overdrive and I've yet to hear a pedal that matches it (though I'm working on that :) ), but it's such a shame that the bias isn't available on the pedal version. the size of the thing is a huge pain in the ar*e. I don't even know how the BT pedal compares as I've never had the opportunity to try one, but I'm sure I'd miss the bias control. Last I looked schematics (of slightly dubious accuracy) were available for the pedal but not the rack, so even a pedal sized clone seems out of the question. :(

No idea how much these things go for now, but they were always very thin on the ground, and I've got to say the Tube Driver with the bias seems horrendously priced. Perhaps that's just the price you have to pay for tone.

Oh, just to say the anyone looking for low gain overdrive could do much worse than a BDDI or BDI-21. Especially at the price of the BDI-21.

Thanks for all the great information, advice & ideas that have been bought to this thread.... I now have the Catalinbread SFT pedal & it does pretty much exactly what I want!... Well pleased... A special thank you to Nick for lending me his SFT Clone for so long, so I had the chance to compare it with all the others...

Although I was completely seduced by the idea of the JHS Low Drive, from the youtube vids... to the point of buying it! ...Good as it was as a tubescreamer type, when compared to the SFT there was no contest.... the variety to be found in this pedal it terrific... & the dynamic response really sealed the deal for me.

Tone World in Manchester are worth a shout too... They matched the price of the JHS from a US seller on ebay & were happy to take it back & refund the difference, when I finally bought the, slightly cheaper, SFT from them... :)
