Random note generator?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm currently learning my way around the fretboard (i.e. which lettered note corresponds with which string/fret) and thought it would be really handy to have a little program that flashes a random note (C#, F, A etc) on the screen for a predetermined amount of time (say 1 second) so I can then attempt to play that note while it's on screen.

Has anyone come across something like this? If it could play the note as well it would be really handy, but I'd settle for just the visual prompt...

It can be for any platform, Mac, Windoze, Linux, iOS...anything really (ok, maybe not ZX81...).

There's an app on iOS that does this, called 'Bass Clef', but it requires you to 'play' the notes by tapping a virtual string on your phone, rather than just giving you random notes to play on a real bass - if that makes any sense?

I came across it after being recommended by someone on Basschat (but I can't remember who!). Very useful and strangely addictive, in my opinion...

There's also this FREE online 'game' which is similar:

Play This Note Bass Edition supports the iDevice's mic - so you can, in theory, use your real bass instead of tapping on a virtual fretboard. I haven't tried that bit of the app though - since I only used it while at work for a few weeks.

Cool, am liking them so far...cheers guys.

Not exactly what I was looking for (haven't checked the Mac one yet), but some great tools there. The Vic W one is close, and should help with placement - hopefully transferring it to the real fretboard shouldn't be too much of a trouble.

Esp useful are the ios ones, as I'm going on hols for a week soon and can't take the bass (missus' orders) so can practice a bit on the iphone!

This is one of the Mac ones, and it sounds to me like exactly what you're looking for:

[b]"And here's a new addition: a very simple program that plays random notes at a tempo and range that you can set. The goal is to play the note back on your own instrument right after it's been played by the program. My friend Jerome Sabbagh brought this one to me; he got it from Ben Monder. The exercise itself couldn't be simpler, but it's a challenge to do it quickly, particularly when the range is wide.

Innit?!?! :) :)
