i am a big fan of geezer butler (black sabbath) and geddy lee (rush) but have recently caught the disco bass bug and have to say it has improved my technique.

a short list of the basslines that got me in the groove............

le freak - chic
everybody dance - chic
good times - chic
i`m coming out - diana ross.... using chic bassist, bernard edwards.
a few by earth wind and fire and sister sledge (again bernard edwards)

and you have GOT TO LEARN......disco inferno by the trammps,
played that in the guitar shop in bluewater while trying out new basses and everyone in the shop was tapping their feet....
its a killer bass line.

True....we cover that.

Instantly recognisable.....great to play.....great for improving timing.....and a guaranteed floor filler.

any other suggestions from others?
Try listening to some of the simpler Motown stuff (James Jamerson's "the daddy") :)

How Sweet It Is
Reach Out I'll Be There

and some simpler Level 42 stuff....maybe Chinese Way....another one that once you get right will sound as tight as gnat's chuff.

 • 1 month later...

Since I mentioned Tina Weymouth in the "Babes" thread, I've been trying various Talking Heads bits, including And She Was and Wild Wild Life, but try Heaven for starters:

Dig those 80s threads! :)

Also, since I last looked at XTC's Mayor of Simpleton, someone's posted a video of the bassline, which looks spot-on to me: here.

Some Prince wouldnt go amiss - try "Get on the Boat" or "Lets go Crazy".

Jamiroquai - High Times, Runaway, Deeper Underground are all pretty easy.

Tower Of Power's "What is Hip" is a very good excersise in getting those 16th notes nice and clean sounding (it seems tough at first but the more you do it the better you get).

Jamiroquai - Try and learn every song on Emergency On Planet Earth. Zender was 19 when he recorded that album, that just blows my mind for what he comes out with. Such musicality at such a young age, what a player.

The reeeaaaallly tricky one is Music Of The Wind - get on it :)

Edit - actually I just learnt it in about 45mins...cant be that tricky but what a choooon
