Bought my old H&K rig back that I sold 5 years ago!

As I was under the illusion that 250w was insufficient power I sold this amp and cab about 5 years ago to a local lad that I'd known from many moons ago. Long story short; I've been thinking of keeping a practice rig at our rehearsal space so I've been watching here, ebay etc. and up pops this. Contacted the guy who hadn't used it in anger since buying it and so I went to get it back.

I went to try the rig and it was pathetic. :) I had input and output gains on full and it wasn't even as loud as your car stereo (assuming you aren't driving a 'beatbox' Saxo). I tried various tricks and came to the conclusion that worst case scenario the amp might need a service/fix but the cab appeared to be as good as when I'd flightcased it. A word of warning... don't use instrument cable for speaker lead! As soon as I got it home I realised that the speaker lead that he gave me was an instrument patch lead, replaced with a proper lead and hey presto!

Welcome home old friend. :)
H&K gear is awesome. If they decided to bring out lightweight gear I would be very tempted. In saying that,,,,,god knows what kinda price they would be :)
I know what you mean!

2x10... but thinks it's bigger than it is! :)
My first loud amp was a Bassbase 600 head. In hindsight, it was one the best amps I've owned in terms of useful features, volume and build quality.
I've had the BassBase 250, 400 + 600 and the 600 was awesome.
Interesting rig! Never seen one before, despite having had several H & K guitar amps which I really liked. The old H & K stuff from when it was all made in Germany was great, extrememly well made and very clean sounding in a positive way.
The bassbase 250 (combo and amp) along with the first series of BC cabs were H&K's first foray into the bass market, closely followed by the bassbase 400/600 amps. As you say the early German made gear was real pro quality stuff and had a fair old retail tag to match and I loved the nice fat but clean tone... I liked them a lot! :)
As the owner of your other BassBase 250 head I can definitely say that you're not getting it back!!

Coupled with a pair of BFM 10.5s it's lovely even if it looks a bit Heath Robinson in a homemade sleeve.
Honestly mate, I've not stopped playing with this since I got it back and if it can make a loud enough noise with my band (enough for me to monitor on-stage), I'm thinking of selling my Thunderfunk and pair of Aggies! :)

Given the amount of high-end gear you've used the H&K must aquit itself well! I use mine with almost flat eq and it sounds, well, fat but clear! The valve pre-amp gives a nice bit of valvey warmth and compression when pushed.

The Ashdown MAG300 head I've got sounds horribly sterile by comparison.

The other good thing about that amp as well is that it's very serviceable - just good off-the-shelf chunky components and a nice chunky PCB. There are no fans to break or go noisey - just a big heatsink. I've changed quite a few bits - not because anything went wrong - but things like smoothing caps degrade with age and I'd guess the amp to be 15-20 years old.

The only slightly specialised part is probably the mains transformer with the extra windings for the valve HT but I'd definitely get a replacement wound if it went pop.

My only sight criticism is that it does induce hum into nearby stuff - not having a toroidal transformer doesn't help and maybe the case I made could do with better shielding.

If anyone's after a head and you know of one of these I'd snap it up!

...THINKING! :)

I genuinely thought that it'd be like meeting up with an old girlfriend and she wasn't quite as nice/good as you remembered but it brought back all of the good things that I remembered of the 250 combos. Considering I'm only getting about 170-180w into the 8ohm load I'm seriously thinking that I'd have enough power to compete with the guitards and then DI for FOH. We'll see what happens when I try it with the band.
That's an interesting point about the leads :)

I did it the other way around.

I picked up a speaker lead and played my guitar through my AC15....

It sounded awful. I was all for taking the amp to a repairer!

Leads make all the difference
Hand on heart the sound/volume when I first tried it was WOEFUL and I had genuinely budgeted to have the amp repaired when I bought it but inspection of the cable he supplied just rang major alarm bells and it was the simplest fix... EVER.

I did have a pang of conscience and I've sent him a cheque for another £30, churlish not to! :)

I think you should think long and hard about getting back with your girlfriend...and that will give me time to save up load of pennies. :)
