FlatEric Posted March 2, 2011 Share Posted March 2, 2011 I went to see Peter Frampton last night, at the Assembly in Leamington. In a word [size=4]STUNNING[/size]. Back in the day of "Frampton Comes Alive" I think I wore out my vinyl copy - not only the record but the sleeve as well! Albums of that size were a lot more interesting. Peter and the band came on, no support, no waffle - Just came on a played and played and played - all the songs you would want to hear if you loved Frampton Comes Alive. The sound was one of the best I have ever heard - apparently it has won some sort of award for the quality of the venue and the sound - lighting was great and the place was full. Really getting into it and then he introduced the band. . . . . "and on bass, Mr Stanley Sheldon". The icing on the cake. Stanley was the first fretless rock bass player I had hever seen - Precision, with a maple board, years ago - now a Musicman and and another bass I couldn't quite work out what it was. Just a brilliant night and a venue I will definately visit again - "Stray" are on in April, always worth a look. Anyone else go?? Cheers. I'm pretty sure he played with Bowie during 80's on the Glass Spider tour. Not sure why he didn't maintain his success all those yrs ago. I was too young for Frampton Comes Alive when it came out but bought a Jumble Sale copy for 20p in the late 80s and played it to death. Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton sharing lead guitar and lead vocals. Although to be fair Marriott was the stand-out vocalist and Frampton the stand-out guitarist. The rhythm section of Greg Ridley on bass and Jerry Shirley on drums were no slouches, they couldn't afford to be behind those two. Driving, early seventies rock with a great dollop of bluesy soul. They seem to have faded from collective memory now - we need a BBC4 special! Check out the live double 'Performance - Rockin' the Filllmore'. I remember that when 'Frampton comes alive' came out it sounded very MOR and wimpy in comparison (to my teenage ears). I learned to love it since though. Sean Posted March 12, 2011 Share Posted March 12, 2011 The Bristol gig was fabulous. Peter is such a likeable bloke. The band was incredble and this must have been the best value for money gig I have ever seen; it was around £24 for nearly 3 hours of first class performance by a true great.
