I currently own a SX Acoustic bass and i couldnt ask for anything better!. But i am looking for a P-bass and SX have been a brand i have been looking at alot. Can you still only buy them from the US? Plus if anybody successfully modded an SX P-bass what were the results like?[/quote] I've got an SX P-bass, which I've modded with a Schaller 3D bridge and a Mighty Mite neck and it's one of the best P-basses I've ever played, period - and I'm a big P-bass fan, so I've owned/tried a lot of them. I sold my 08 US P-Bass and kept this one - it's the one in my sig - and it's my go-to bass these days. I bought it secondhand, though, and I've no idea where to buy SX gear new, or I'd be buying more of their stuff. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It is a shame about the headstock because there are some great models on Rondo right now. I haven't seen many turn up on ebay, but it's always worth a look. hillbilly deluxe Posted October 7, 2010 Share Posted October 7, 2010 (edited) I have a JD Stingray thing,looks good,passive,plays really well,sounds ok,and the neck is very stable.I have tried a couple of P type JD's and really liked them.I think they retail new for £135 ish,certainly better than the cheaper Squiers IMO,and the ones that i have seen recently still have the correct headstock shape. In my experience the best Sx's are the "Ltd" ones which I think Rondo are now calling "Pro". I don't believe Jim Deacon do those. Also be aware that the basses in the SX starter packs are not held in the same regard. There is always a chance that the Jim Deacon ones are the same as those. I couldn't tell you for sure though. JD has/had a website but i can't find it at the moment.The JD's that i have seen all had the vintage tint laquer on the neck too,while the starter pack SX's looked like something that was made for IKEA. derrenleepoole Posted October 7, 2010 Share Posted October 7, 2010 I own two SX basses, both short scale. One is a P-bass fretted, the other a J-bass fretless and they are both fantastic instruments. The build quality on each is superb, especially when you factor in the price of them new, which is nothing really. They're equally as good as any high end Squier or similar instrument, if not better. These basses are very easy to mod, as most replacement parts are like for like swaps. I have for example a Gotoh 201 bridge on the j-bass and soon to fit Varitone passive on board preamp. The P-bass is getting a Gotoh bridge and is fitted with upgraded GFS Pro Wound Pickups. Cheap basses, with affordable upgrades make for great instruments in my book. I've never been happier with these two basses as I have with any others. I've owned low and high end gear, and I've at last found my bass keepers This is in part due to the fact that I've discovered short scale to be the answer to a lot of my back problems too! As others have said, the newer Ursa models have the ugly headstock, but older models are still available. Rasta on here is selling a full scale SX P-bass for £100. I've just bought it off him, but it was advertised as short scale, which it isn't The bass is on its way back to him today, so he'll be probably putting it back up for sale at some point. Mine is the P-bass on the left, the one on the right is Rasta's which is for sale. Ain't the p-bass diddy? Shambo Posted October 7, 2010 Share Posted October 7, 2010 I got my 3/4 P bass, with the old headstock, new off t'bay a month or two ago, via a seller from Belgium. Out the box it plays fine, but could do with some better strings... and a more substantial bridge... and the pup/electrics aren't exactly the greatest. Although she's not been 'modded' as such, she has benefitted from a full set up by our very own 7string and she's not bad at all..!
