JMBassist
Hi people. I'm new here, so be gentle..! I'd like to have your opinion about a decision I need to make. I going to buy a new bass but I'm not sure which one the best between Ibanez BTB675 and MTD KZ5. Both are in my GAS list and the prices are similar, but the only one I've played was the BTB, don't know the KZ5 except from what I read. My "kind of bass" should have a deep and strong sound and have a good slap. Give me your opinions and help me to make my mind.

chris_b
Can you try these before you buy? On paper I would go for the MTD. The US MTD's are fantastic and I would expect Michael Tobias to achieve the same from his "far eastern" line, as do Sadowsky with their Metro and Lakland with their Skyline basses. With your budget maybe you could also consider Sandberg and Clover. These are all great basses. Good luck with your search.
JTUK
I am loathe to accept that any bass line has that degree of consistancy in tone and playability. I just don't think then QC is there, mostly, and then you might get different bits and pieces here and there will may alter things. I would not buy many basses without hearing them and playing them..if, hardly ever. I would be thinking the MTD would be the better bass or the one out of the two in my pole position...but I would have to see them both in the shop and then decide. JMBassist
Hi. Thanks for your feedback Actually I've played the BTB675 and it sounds very good, but it is a little bit heavy. I don't have a shop here to test a MTD, so the idea is to buy online without testing it. It's a risk I know. Lakland are more expensive and at this moment are not on my budget... Mikeg
i have a btb 670 and its fantastic, its so versitile and the tone is amazing, also good for slap. i would highly recomend it
bassmeg
The BTB looks very nice, and i am sure it is but i have not tried one. As for the MTD i have one, with an aguilar pre and nordstrand pups. I can only comment on the MTD. Its a stunner for a start. The 35" scale is a winner for me. I find it so smooth to play with a great hi-fi sound. Great for any style. Although having said that, playing with my rock covers band i could not get the sound to cut through as well as my Aria. I may need to try it again and set it differently, but it did really annoy me. Overall top quality sound. But for rock, maybe look elsewhere. fender73
Never played either, but on paper (or screen) the MTD wins it for me
bassmeg
Just a bit of porn. [attachment=58293:mtd4.JPG] [attachment=58294:mtd_03.JPG] Just to add from above, playing this bass acoustically just confirms that it not only looks nice but its a dream player. Set up with Dean Markley Rocco Prestia strings. Came with the bass, maybe the best strings i have come across.

bassmeg
I have no idea. The owner before me was RayFW. Very nice guy, get in touch with him and he could set you straight. Edited September 7, 2010 by bassmeg
mrtcat
I used to own a btb675 and loved the look of it. It didn't last long though as I couldnt get it to cut thru with the band. I use an ampeg head and a mesa boogie cab but I just found the bass a bit flat no matter what I did. If I was looking at that kind of budget something like a warwick rockbass would suit me far better for versatility and presence. My.02 but I agree both basses you're looking at are very good to look at.
JMBassist
Thank you guys for your opinions. unfortunately I've missed the deal with the MTD, now only BTB is available. I'm not sure if btb is a good solution for what i'm expecting, so I think my GAS has to wait
JMBassist
Hi people Just an update to this post. I've decided to go to the MTD Z5 and I have now it at home. The sound is not bad even on 5th string. Actually it has a very nice slap and is much better than my Tobias Growler 5. For now I'm very happy with it but I'm gonna gig the first time only next week. Let's see how it plays.
