1. surprised about the lack of interest here? New price was £185, somebody grab a bargain!
2. Wow, Manring really takes bass playing into another art form. From observations I presume the E-Bow isn't something you can bung on in the middle of a song? I'm only playing 8 bars of this cow lick...no pun intended. Anyhow, I've arrived pretty close to the sound I wanted with EQ, compression, reverb and mild OD on Guitar Rig. Demo version of the track is nearly done, will post a link soon to demonstrate what the heck I was on about. Cow mooing bass what are you mad? Yes
3. I'd never heard of the E-Bow before, seems interesting. The fretless would probably work better, good suggestion. Mine is out of action unfortunately. I'm using compression, but the ratio could do with a boost for this bit. Will attempt to EQ it out. Scott Reeder from Kyuss also springs to mind, not exactly bowed but groany animal like.
4. I'm working on a part of a track where I use some slow slides and bends, which, bear with me, I'm trying to make sound like drunken cow mooing. The articulation is right but the tone in the mix is too dark, not enough voice. I'm playing a Fender P with the tone on 100% treble, the slidey bendy stuff just seems to collect the low freqs and sounds super deep. As a reference point, Les Claypool's bass sound in Pork Soda. I'm pretty sure he's playing an upright of some sort with a bow, so I'm gonna have to cheat with effects. Has anyone attempted anything like this? Maybe a smidgen of overdrive, wah and reverb? Cheers
5. I bought a Thumb 5 back in the German days, it was a brief love affair before being replaced by a Stingray. A few years later picked up a corvette std 5 on the cheap and it was a keeper. Still sounded like a wick but without the unbridled gurgle the thumb has. The MECs were actually pretty good! The preamp was the weakest link, not much guts and no mid control. I'm running an all EMG system now but given the choice again, I would've left the MECs in there and installed an Aggie 3 band. A more powerful pre really woke this instrument up.
6.
This is sooooo subjective its unbelievable! My current hip hop band essentially I need all my effects! tuner, compressor, fuzz, pitchshifter, octaver, vibe, delay. When I turn up to pub/function/rock/jazz gig, I can easily go straight into amp. Tuning never really is a problem either, so a quick tune before and at break will suffice. If I were to be involved in a regular rock band, I'd probably go for OD and a fuzz. Probably put a tuner there just for the sake of it.
+1 It really depends on the band's style. As a bare bones I use a tuner and an EQ type pedal to shape my sound. Playing with random amps in rehearsal rooms, I find the a unit like the Tech 21 Bass VT indispensable, of course there are many alternatives.
7. CIOKS pussy power seems like a possible contender, also looks awesome
8. So I've been progressively building up my stomp boxes for a little while now, and am looking at options to power the lot. VT Bass - 9v (100mA) Dunlop 105Q - 9v (100mA) Corona Chorus - 9v (100mA) Echobox - 9v (100mA) Deep Impact - 9v (180mA) Demon King - 9v (?mA) Diamond Bass Compressor - 18-24v (18mA) Rusty Box - 24-40v (100mA) = 6 x 9v 1 x 18v 1 x 30v I currently have 3 PSU's (a boss 9v + 6 way daisy chain, 1 x 18v PSU, 1 x 30v PSU). I realise daisy chains aren't the best option, but to date I've only used up to 4 x 9v pedals simultaneously. I can't say I've noticed any issues. So now I'm tossing up whether I should buy an extension powerboard for the 3 PSUs, or buy a central power supply like the Voodoo labs one. The price is obviously a bit hit, do I really need one? Also, should I be concerned about the effects with unusual voltage requirements - the Diamond BC and Rusty Box. Any words of wisdom? Cheers rhythmbug
9. Not a very well known band on these shores but Karnivool's new album Asymmetry. Not that I dislike the album, but it doesn't captivate me like their previous material, after numerous listens, it's just not having any impact. I ordered 2 copies from Australia the day it came out, gave the other to my mate. He listened to it once and said what happened, this is meh material.
10. I know this feeling well and yeah that's true, fingerstyle on P doesn't lend itself to a really grindy sound, particularly on the E string . That doesn't stop me from trying though I've been satisfied with the VT Bass for quite a while, it does the job well. At the moment I'm experimenting with other units for a heavier, dirtier sound. I may have mine for sale for sale very soon. I say may because I'm a bit hesitant to part with it! But I'm eagerly awaiting an imminent delivery of a Tronographic Rusty Box. It was supposed to arrive today, USA import. Separately, have you done any mods to your electrics? An option some have done is fitting 500k pots and a .0015uf capacitor, which is said to add more treble. I've been toying with that lately, just haven't gotten around to it, I always end up getting blasted by my band mates for tinkering about!
11. Immaculate condition, 7 months old, home use only. Comes boxed with Ableton lite and USB cable. Excellent preamps, nothing compares at this price point. Full specs http://uk.focusrite....es/scarlett-2i2 £85 posted Cheers Mike
12. I bought this a few years ago from a chap who said he'd had it since the 90s as a backup. I therefore presume it's the original model as it's got the LM308 chip inside. All in sound working order, some scuffs to the casing and knobs but nothing major and no rust. Price dropped to £40 posted Cheers Mike
13. Hi Yeatus, apologies for the delayed response, only just spotted your query. Sorry these aren't American Standard size. Those ones are 101mm neck / 104mm bridge. These are both 95mm.
14. Brilliant, cheers for the local contact! Signor Gatto I presume? That looks like the biz.
15. Thanks for all the feedback! I agree the Rat has definitely a sweet spot. I feel it's bit of a one trick pony (though it's a damn good trick) and in that light perhaps upgrading to Fuzzrocious would kill two birds with one stone. But so many different models though it's a bit overwhelming, some with modifications, some with extra functions, some more basic. I've watched some demo vids. I'm tempted by elaborate models like the Rat King, but flip me it has so many controls! A lot of the demo sounds seem a bit OTT for everyday purposes. Do they do a milder, grindier, tube driven sort of sound? Could they make a VT Bass pedal redundant? If anyone could guide me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated. I play a Fender P and a Warwick Corvette (emgs).
16. I've owned a Turbo Rat for a little while and would like to solve the loss of bass frequencies issue by possibly adding a Boss EQ pedal. Is this the most common treatment? Would using a Line Selector not be a better option? What about an MXR87 compressor for additional tightness? The high end really can roar, but it starts drowning out the guitars. What I want is all that snarl centred in the midrange, the sharp highs rolled off slightly. I stumbled across the Fuzzrocious range of pedals. Has anyone compared an EQ boosted Turbo Rat to one of these bad boys? I heard some good samples on their website. Are they available to try out anywhere in London?
