1. Got it too, i'm also sorry to spoil your day
2. I fitted a Fender scratchplate to my son's Squire P bass, and on his all but 2 holes lined up ( holes not seen with the scratchplate on ), had to drill 2 holes as they were about one eighth of an inch out. Also I had to file a little off the pup hole to make it fit.
3.
I've no idea if using such materials will make a great cabinet or not - but I'd defintely subscribe to the build diary! Sounds like an interesting project!
+1 I would be very interested to see how it turns out, and some idea of the cost involved.
4. How about no scratchplate but put the screws back in? Done to my jazz and it looks the dogs whotsits IMO.

Very sad news indeed, my thoughts are with Si's family and friends at this sad time. R.I.P Si.
6. Thanks for the replies, sorry so long getting back (internet problem). The varitone has 4 connectors in a block with screw in joints, I think I must have one of the wires in the wrong place from what you have told me. I will go and have another go at getting it right ( I am not too good with electrics ). Again many thanks.
7. I have just fitted a pair of Seymour Duncan stk-j2 to my jazz which sound great, I have a Varitone fitted with a stacked pot (master volume and master tone) the middle is the blend and the last one the Varitone switch, both pots on the stacked are working as volume controls, also has two switches, series/ parallel and a bypass. Has anybody got any idea how to cure this, Could be my wiring, but everything else works ok, there are two wires (red and white) which the instructions say solder together and tape up. Many thanks.
8.
Some P basses have a bit of a reputation for buzzing A-strings, its caused by the shallow angle of the sdtring going over the nut to the tuning peg. When u fit the strings on, u have to make sure the string is wound on in a downwards fashion which helps maximise the string angle over the nut, the extra downforce pressure of the string seated in the nut slot cures the buzzing problem and allows proper transfer of energy to the guitar. 3 or 4 windings, each one going further down towards the face of the headstock should cure the problem.
+1 I had the same problem on my jazz, I put on a small string tree on the e and a strings and this worked a treat.

10. Managed to get hold of Thonk by Michael Manring a few days ago ffffffflipping awesome. Been on the cd player all the time.
11. My son started music college last year ( he is a guitarist ) in his year there were 4 drummers, 7 guitarist, 3 singers, 3 dj's no bassist and no keyboardist. He got himself a bass and amp, I gave him some lessons, and through the whole year he was very much in demand, playing in 3 bands. When he goes back next year as there are 2 bassist starting he is going to go back and play guitar and also bass as he really enjoys it. He practices in his room, one night guitar, next night bass. So as has been stated in this thread by others, if you enjoy both, play both.
12. Only once at a gig, about 20 years ago, A string. First and only time ( touch wood ).

20.
I would recommend that you carry on playing your fretted. Just play 'on the fret' rather than 'in between'. It'll help your muscle memory and should transfer across to your fretless.
+1
