  1. Hi Matthew thanks for sharing this info at such a sad time I’d have gratefully gone for a coffee at the cafe in Highgate woods as we did on numerous occasions. Without Lawrence’s guidance I’d have been pretty useless as a musician and my wit a lot less sharper.🙏🏽🙏🏽
  2. Hi, I’m researching the best way to re create the sound of an upright on my Dean Pace EUB. I’ve tried using a condenser mic which sounds fantastic but feeds back like crazy once the desired volume level is achieved. I don’t want to upgrade the piezos or preamp but have been contemplating trying the “Tone Dexter” preamp.

I can justify the purchase as it can be used in conjunction with my acoustic upright as well, but before I do this I was wondering if it’s a stupid idea (in relation to the EUB)

ok I’ve said it, let the merriment commence 😃

I meant to add; getting your playing technique right will be the biggest first step, of course.

PPS. I recently got myself an EBS Micro Bass pedal, which is also something else you may wish to look into - it offers good tonal control / EQ options

I wonder if a 3 Sigma upright bass impulse would work for you. Obviously, you'll need an IR loader device.

  3. One other I knew him and went for lessons at his place in Highgate London. He taught many great bassists around that time as well as at his classes at Goldsmiths college. You can jog his memory about the interview we did for making music magazine

  11. Hi yeah I’ve been looking at the rechargeables online. The output from the Dean is very low and required a buffer preamp. In the course of experimentation I also tried adding a condenser mic which was a revelation. It sounds good now and no worries about draining batteries unless I blend in both the piezo and the condenser. might still research that charging cable though can’t hurt can it Thanks for the info 👍🏽
  12. Ok Thanks it was an issue that came up on a forum and the batteries were pretty much fried when I got the instrument .I had a sire that needed 18volts and never had an issue. I’ve actually clipped on a condenser (running it through a pre for the phantom power) now and that sounds much more “acousticy” and will only drain the battery if I blend the piezo and the mic cheers Paul
  13. Hi I’ve just got hold of a dean pace Eub and noticed that the battery life isn’t great. Is there anyway to replace the batteries 2 x 9 volt with a power supply or is it a case of modding the piezo bridge some how thanks 🙏🏽
  14. Hi mate I just wanted to express my interest in the Dean.I’m supposed to be checking one out next week but having problems getting confirmation from the seller.. If he’s not got back to me by the end of the weekend I’ll definitely take it. Feel free to contact me if you still have it or not https://www.paul-francis-bassplayer.com/contact Thanks Paul

Hi, Great news.I've finally managed to reissue my 1st cd !!

Funky Alchemy 2020 By Capricorn 1

Capricorn 1 are one of my many instrumental band projects playing original tunes that mix the influences I love. The Music spans many genres including Rock funk Jazz and world music..... built from the remnants of my days with Paul weller JTQ and Galliano and my musical relationship with drummer Harbans Shrih (JTQ, The Funky Muchachos).

These tracks were originally written by myself Harbens Shrih, Dave O'higgins and Mick Talbot from The Style Council and were recorded in 1990 for Eddie Pillar at Acid Jazz Records. These sessions were intended to be a follow up to a to the album Open Channel D by Whats What and "Totally wired "

Unfortunately it was not to be and the tracks lay in the vaults at Sonica studios South London. I started to put gigs together round the recording and started writing new material for the project, eventually Capricorn 1 was born.

Although the other tracks stayed mainly in hibernation 2 have been issued to Focus Music BMG and have been used by The BBC for the programme "about the good life" www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00wyhth and for other Tv channels around the world

I'm really happy with how the bass players available page on facebook is doing right now with 1,663 members to date (with players guitar builders from all over the world) I found when looking, that there wasn't a specific bass work related page there, but there is now and its going from strength to strength...So heres to the future
