  1. Morning all,

This is something I've been pondering from a while. I have a very nice L2000 from the 80's (see photo) , I love the tone, the look and the neck profile BUT I really don't like the gloss finish on the neck. I've found I prefer satin finishes.

Would taking steel wool to the neck to remove some of the finish affect the value of the bass?

I know this is kind of a subjective question but any opinions welcomed

    Ta!

Kala not worth the money. The deko Harley Benton I have kicks my Kala's behind. I have Pyramid black tapewound strings on it and it's killer for what I paid.

Have you tried any other strings on you HB? I've read that they aren't all the same scale length so don't work on all Bass Ukes

See this is what I'm taking about, we have a wealth of knowledgeable people I'd love to listen too discussing everything from Luthiery, technique, theory, recording, composition, industry news, gear reviews and stuff.

Just for example: A podcast with Chowny, Alan from ACG and Andyjr1515 all talking about their bass making experiences. Three completely different parts of the bass market but all very interesting.

As for appealing to the "yoof", the recent poll showed that I am in the younger side of the forum and I listen to podcasts quite a lot but currently don't have a go-to bass podcast so would be great to have one! Obviously these things take time to organise and develop but no harm in giving it a bash.

  4. Welcome!

Only thing I would say is about the kits is it MIGHT not be the best value, the amp will be fine but for the same money you could get a better Squier than the Affinity(I'm guessing) that's included. Going second hand might allow you to get a better bass, but there is just so much choice!

Go and try a few if you can, the world is your oyster. You will never be short of good advice around these parts.

I had one of these before Dr Who did. As did the BC member who at one point had about 30 of them - every model, colour variation & a whole bunch of the original 60s versions too. Mine was one of his duplicates. :)

These are great basses, definitely a head-turner, very playable and nothing like as neck-divey as the body shape would suggest. GLWTS!

This is my second one of these, I got my first from that very BC member :D

They are great, nice and light and just a fun bass, but I don't need it and it deserves to be played.

I like it. Looks to be a cheaper alternative to the Taylor mini?

Agree, and the strings look a bit better than the Taylor Mini ones.

I like the idea. I've got a Uke bass but the rubbery strings are a bit crap, especially when I sweat.

I'd like to try one. £400 is a bit steep for a travel bass though so it would have to be very good.

I've also got a Uke bass (Harley Benton) and the strings are fun for a noodle but couldn't see myself playing for hours on end. Having a wee bass that I can pick up at anytime with no amp is appealing.

  7. HEY YOU! YES YOU!

Do you have a bass? Great start, but I bet your bass isn't as cool as this bass! (IT IS CALLED A SAMURAI BASS AND HAS BLUE STRINGS TOO).
Dr. Who plays the guitar version, doesn't get much cooler than that.

For sale today for you lucky buyers is a Yamaha SBV500, you won't see many of these going for sale outside Japan these days.

It's basically a jazz bass but 9000% cooler. Slim neck and Volume Volume Tone controls. This one has also been nicely routed for a battery compartment for active electronics. I still have the EMG-BQC active preamp that was in it if the buyer wants it (adds another 500 cool points). Its been gigged (not by me), so there are a few scuffs and scrapes but that doesn't affect the playability at all. Happy to show more detail if photos I've added aren't enough

I have a box so it will be well packed so can post at buyers expense/risk. Price now includes delivery!

Feel free to ask any questions!

OK - so it continues more, although this isn't technically an SR, its a GVB 36

I didn't realise that when the string spacing is that narrow at the bridge it stayed the same spacing all the way up the neck so it is pretty massive up there, but it is fun so far!

    14mm spacing O.o yikes!

  9. I have the expression pedal B1Xon and the main use of the pedal is for volume :D Although I have been known to link it to the gain function of the SansAmp-a-like to add grit, quite a useful feature.

The controls are a bit pesky for editing sometimes but I can't really complain, only paid £35 for mine!

Massive bonus is the ability to power off USB, no more searching for a 9V adapter!
