Even the best luthiers have their off-days...
EBS_freak replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
One day that story will come out Russ and you will be enemy number one, I feel privileged to already know but my lips are sealed
Ha ha! Good enough for "<name removed>" and "<name removed>", then I'm sure it's good enough for you. That told me huh? Anyway, back to AC - I was thinking about finishes. I seem to recall JC making a big point about having a top guy shooting his nitro - ex Fender even? or maybe a top car guy? - my mind forgets. Anyway, seems that with the move of manufacturing locations, the build process and the fact he is now doing his own finishes, the AC brand is not what it once was. I know this is a bit of a sweeping statement but I can wager there will be a "pre move" era premium come out of this incident if there is an impact on the business! -

I had a similar experience with a (very popular) builder that was less than rosy. I chose not to make it public on this forum (or any other forum as it happens) as I knew the fanbois would defend to the max. I was close to doing so though - why? I was heavily out of pocket, left with a pos and it was looking like I was not going to get any resolution to the situation. The luthier was not listening and was questioning my ability of knowing anything about the constuction of instruments and how they should or shouldn't be. I managed to get the situation resolved and get a replacement... albeit only when a third party got involved. Pretty sad that luthiers tend to be highly defensive of their work, reply on the uber offensive and basically treat their customers as dick heads. The only thing that makes the experience a bit sweeter is that I never put in my 4k order with said luthier and never had to deal with the possibility of beind lumbered with a substandard pos. I can fully sympathise with the OP on TB. I'm still surprised at JC... I read it back again today and my jaw is still on the floor. I love Allevas (well, that green racing stripe one at least)... but I wouldn't have the confidence to order direct now. I would only buy an instrument off the shelf that I could inspect... which is a great shame because an instrument like that, you should have the confidence to spec it up and now that it's going to arrive absolutely bang on. This whole thing about it being a discounted show instrument stinks. If I was at a show and saw that excuse of a bass, I would be walking anyway. I can't see JC having done himself any sort of favour here whatsoever. Just an all round sad state of affairs. -
Cant really help with the amps but i used to use an EBS classic 410 and replaced it with a Aguilar GS410 and the difference was unbelievable.
I'm not surprised. That's not really a fair comparison - that's EBS budget range of cabs. A more fair comparison in this instance would be against the EBS Proline 410.

Compressor... failing that, pull back your volume for finger style which will enable you to give yourself a boost for slap.
If you're the Ferrari of the bass world, the only type in this list should be A That's part of the reason people are willing to pay £3300 for one of your instruments.
Indeed. -

Wow. Interesting response from JC! Kinda with molan on this too.. alot of people ready to pitchfork when they have no experience of AC basses. Certainly, the pics which are on show on TB are not in keeping with the quality of AC that I have seen. Can't really say much more but I am still surprised by the response of JC. For me, it's kinda up there with the people that say, "my bass is better than a Fodera... or finished better than a Fodera... etc." when these people making such claims have never seen one, yet alone played one, in the flesh so to speak. Were the people that say, JC never going to have a penny from me, ever going to buy an AC anyway? It's all kind of sad. -

I'm quite surprised by this... but it would seem that it's what comes with success. He's gone CNC now and the prices are still north of what I think they should be... especially given the fact that to some degree, his bodies and necks are no longer entirely "hand made". "Hand finished" would be a better definition. But hey. If you want an AC, you pay... and if people will pay for them, then good luck to them. I saw the green racing strip AC pass through Bass Gear recently. That's a stunner of a bass... sadly, the others that I have played haven't done it for me but that one... grr... Sounds and plays great. -
Assuming you don't want to drop crazy amounts of cash... or go into licensed frequencies... First up, go digital - simple reason being, no compounder hence full range signal response. Options are - Sony DWZ series - typically, DWZB30GB Stageclix Line6 or wait for the Shure GLX guitar to hit the UK (pretty much now) All have their plus and negatives though... but all will do the actual job of transmission wirelessly perfectly. EDIT - when I mean plus and negatives, things to consider are as follows -

Rackmountable/vs non rack mountable vs pedal type receiver. (May be plus or a negative... depending upon your needs and use of pedals)
Readily available AA batteries vs internal rechargable battery vs single purpose battery designed especially for the system in question.
Build quality - cheap and plastic vs metal construction.
Connectivity options - DI out and tuner out, USB upgrades etc.
Encryption - The Sony DWZ series offers that as an option (but not the DWZB30GB).
Multiple channel reception - The Shure for example will switch between channels in an attempt to prevent dropout (not that any of the above are prone to drop out)
PS - out of that list, my fave is the Sony (for it's construction and use of AA) followed by the Shure (for it constuction but it's lack of AAs is a bit of a downfall - having said that, a small recharge time yields a long play time)... but all will do the job. If you really want the DBs, looks at the Shure ULX-D on Channel 38. It's incredible (but be prepared to drop way over a grand for the unit and the license). I can vouch for it being an unbelievable system as it's now part of my rig... but whether it's any better in normal situations, well that's debatable. In terms of connectivity options, range, encryption, build... absolutely... but then again, it's 6 times the price of a G30 and requires a license.

Yup. That's pretty sh1t. -
Both great heads... the 750 is a monster however, the Fafner does the top end bright that the Aggie doesn't. Whether that is your thing or not is a different matter. You can take away the brightness of the Fafner but you can't add that to the Aggie. Conversely, the Aggie has a more old school coloured feel about it which is polar opposite to the bright, clean, almost neutral hifi sound of the Fafner.
Just out or curiosity, how much does something like that cost you.
For the quality and the price of the video shoot, you will not beat FeaturePhonic - they are awesome people to work with and a great laugh. I had the best two days working with these guys... and this is one of the reasons we've always chosen these guys to work with. Their prices are very competitive but the price all depends on the concept that you have. Obviously, this video was quite involved and for example, extra gear was required for the steady in van shots - which would not normally be required... There was also shooting the van from out of a trailing vehicle... the wheel arch shot... and all of this has an influence, so it would be unfair to quote prices as every shoot will be different. Best bet is to email "] with a concept and they will be able to quote you a ballpark figure. As you can see from their work, they hit the mark every time... there is no hit or miss with these guys... and that is very important when you are dropping money on a video. There may be people to give you cheaper quotes but I bet you those guys don't get it right every time and produce a video to the quality that you've seen here... and work with you closely to get the final edit exactly as you want. So, video cost aside, on top of that, we had to hire of the venue which ran to a few hundred pounds - complete with the lighting and stage blocks to give it that vintage "Top of the Pops" look. Having said that, a great venue is not always required - we knew we wanted that sort of look and feel but if you look at Feature Phonics videos, impressive results can be done with minimal lighting. For example, check their work with Wheatus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YcVrMK3j7VM and if you go to their channel on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/user/FEATUREPHONICMEDIA you will see that they can get ace results even in your living room. Additional costs for us was the fuel and insurance on the van (we borrowed it from a band friend for the shoot), the making of the clothes and shoes, which off the top of my head ran to about 130 for the girls, 150 for the boys... 20 pounds for the poker visors... and apart from that, pretty much else was begged stolen or borrowed. It's all about shopping smart. We also hired the use of Matt Pinfield, a superb sound engineer who made sure our sound was captured well - I think you agree he did a phenomenal job. We are all capable at setting up microphones and recording the band but what this guy does, I think you'll agree, is simply breathtaking. From a video point of view (taking away the extra costs mentioned above), certainly be thinking of investing a good few hundred, not thousands, of pounds for a one day shoot (this one was two - one for the interview/band parts, one for the performance)... but from the function band point of view, we have recouped the cost through bookings already.

One man's dog is another man's dream. I know most basses I play in shop's I would probably unfairly class as a "dog" because I simply like a stupidly low action. And the action I play with requires a serious fret dress... which isn't going to happen with stock instruments. To be honest, the only thing that bugs me about (some) shops is that the staff sit around and piss about in quiet periods, when they could be doing something useful like setting up guitars and checking that everything is in tip top condition.
I haven't seen it, I gave up on BGM last year. Despite all the rhetoric from the 'new' experienced editor on his thread here, it's clear nothing has changed, just the same substandard editing and proofing there's always been, not to mention the next to useless reviews. Mike Flynn's been the only ray of hope for BGM for a couple of years but the hope has faded. We do two world class things in the UK, music and whisky, the rest is mostly mediocrity and poor quality. I have never understood why BGM don't give a sh*t about quality and rising above mediocrity, such a depressing waste of opportunity.
Don't get me started. Such a wasted opportunity. Most of the time it feels like its a school magazine. I've long since given up buying it but I shall buy it on the odd occasion that something in it sparks my interest. Last time was for the Larry Graham interview - cheers Mike B, appreciated it. What made me laugh though are the terrible reviews. How can they get these areas so wrong? My current gripe is the 'cons' section. I mean. WTF. Take that issue alone. The AV Guitars is a PJ Precision clone. The con? For this price tag it could have been made more aesthetically pleasing. What? It's a clone?! If you changed the look of it, you are changing the market to who you have pitched the product at. Are you expecting a coffee table top or something... a feature that most PJ players wouldn't be interested in anyway? The Nate Mendel Precision? Superfluous 'damage' to body work. Well... I guess the people that are buying this bass are doing so because of the signature not because of it looks. Anybody wanting a mint P bass will buy one and do a few mods if need be. It's like saying the Jaco signature should have a scratchplate... and oh, some frets would make it easier to play in tune. The violin bass one made me head palm the most though. Nowhere near versatile enough when compared with the current crop of similarly-priced basses on the market. Jeez. You buy that bass because of the one sound that it does. No bass yet can do it all. It's as ridiculous as saying that my P bass with flat wounds can't nail that Level 42 sound. Well guess what, all those other basses at similar prices can't sound like that violin bass. It's as though the writers have to really scratch their heads to come up with a minus point. Utter tripe journalism at its best.

Pete - Pie night looms! Looking forward to it! Should really say, videos are a great marketing tool. My other band's success is greatly down to having a fantastic marketing pack and a great video. Decent video can be expensive but it pays for itself very quickly. We've already got over 30 gigs lined up for 2014 and theres booking appearing for 2015. Invest in a good video and push it around agencies and you'll be out numerous times every week without fail.
