Everyone should check out the tiny little rigs thread in the gear porn section to see the correct method and save money towards a separate head instead of buying more amps that won't sound as good as the creative little rig set ups
Woweee, I hadn't even considered a rig. Some of thos look great and I bet they sound braw too. I like the idea of being able to customise your sound by mixing amps and cabs. What're those Orange mini rigs like for nice warm tones?
  2.
If the fingerboard is the most important part of a Sadowski bass's tone, does that mean you shouldn't play open strings on it Interesting thread this, just read through it all. I personally think the amplifier/speakers, pickups, strings, electronics, and technique have a much greater bearing on a bass's tone than the wood. The pickup is not amplifying the vibrations of the wood, it's converting the oscillations of the string into an electronic signal. The wood will affect how long the string vibrates and which harmonics are strengthened or supressed, but you'll alter the tone much more by rolling off a bit of treble, plucking further up the neck or changing roundwounds for flatwounds than by swapping a maple top for a zubinga one or whatever. I bet no-one in the world can consistently identify what type of wood a bass is made of just by listening to it, but I reckon a lot of us could spot a roundwound or flatwound string. If someone wanted to 'upgrade' their sound, I would recommend buying a better amplifier as I find this to have the most influence on the sound. A cheap-ish bass through a great amp will sound ok, but the reverse is never true. BTW my favourite bass of the moment is a Squier Classic Vibe precision made of basswood which plays and sounds great.
Well said! I am right into my wood now, as dodgy as that sounds. However, more aesthetically than tonewise. Id do think the drying process will have a certain impact, but as you say, it probably affects sustain more than anything else. Visual aesthetics are clearly important to all of us bass players, but tone is where it's at. Even the PRS guys said there is a certain amount of snobbery attached to the whole "tonewood" thing. I wonder if there is a thread anywhere discussing the tone produced by fat stubby fingers versus skinny long ones! g
  3.
This can happen... effectively you're polishing the paint with your hands and it'll revert to type (ie gloss). In the past, I've sanded mine lightly with a P3000 paper to bring the matte back a little.
Yeh, it'll smooth, rather than go glossy. the gloss finish that put me off was proper "GLOSS" lacquer and my hands stuck when I tried to play. anyhow, I am super happy with my bass. I'll write a review once I have an amp that works and have a proper jam. g
  4.
+1,000,000! It's amazing to have something that is compact enough to keep it in the living room yet still be able to use for gigs! Eude
GAS! Just read some reviews...seems quite amazing. I am having trouble with the Ampeg BA115 which is about to be repaired. Might sell it once it has been.
  5. AAAAARHHHGGGGGHHHHH! I get my new bass, I plug it in and play.....my amp breaks down! things aren't going smoothly. The amp in question, an Ampeg BA115. Started off with hiss from the tweeter, progressed into crackling and now the volume is dropping off intermittently for a few seconds at a time, with popping going on to back that up. So, I'm hopeful it will get fixed by the shop or by Ampeg. I love my new bass though. g
  6.
There's someone selling an Eden Nemesis N8 that would do nicely I think: It's here.
thanks for the link. Very interesting, though I think the fuel would cost more than the amp!
  7. Had a thought. I already have a combo for lugging around but it's too big to leave in the living room. What combo would be best to leave behind the sofa in the living room to squeeze in a bit of practise when the wife is out and I just want to sit on the sofa and play? g
  8.
I think the choice of wood is important, but not for the reasons some people may think. Sure the asthetics of the wood is important, it may sound soppy but if the bass looks good you will want to play it more, it will make you happy and you will get better. But mind games apart the higher density of the wood will give better sustain in the same way that a thru neck does vs a bolt on. Adding a tone wood top will do the same thing, I would imagine this is why some ltd edition basses have different 1/8" tops, for example swamp ash body with a maple top. Warwick do this sort of thing alot.
Went to the PRS evening in Glasgow on Monday. Paul Reed Smith was talking (a lot) and he basically said he could work with any piece of wood to make it sound good. By sounding good, he explained that he meant if he tapped it he could get the piece of wood to sustain its vibrations for longer. The way he, and many others, does this is through his high-tech top secret drying process which ensures that every piece of wood that passes through his factory has crystallised resin within. If a piece of wood isn't aged properly it wont sound good no matter what it is. He brought his favourite guitar out. One of his "cheaper" axes that he stumbled across in a shop in Japan. He picked it up and tapped it's body and the body rang for donkeys, so he bought it. Even though it was old enough for the stain to have faded in the sunlight. The PRS folk openely expressed that the wood choices they make are based on aesthetics, workability and availability. Cost didn't really figure as it was their private stock woods. Also, apparently the fretboard wood choice has insignificant impact on tone, that comes mostly from the neck timber itself. Also, apparently again, glue doesn't have a big impact and they use bog standard wood glue. So, I am now off the opinion that if I find a nicely dried piece of driftwood that rings when I hit it it will make a nice stringed instrument. Crystallised resin is where it's at. I don't know too much about wood, but I do about plastics. Is resin in trees amorphous when the tree is alive? Cheers, g PS: PRS's new bass sounded pretty amazing on Monday night. It looked amazing too.
  9.
WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO, just had the call, my Sandberg Cali PM4 with Haussel pickups is being delivered to me at work tomorrow morning. SO excited its untrue. I have been waiting since the beginning of December for this. Shall put up a review as soon as i can as i know a few people have been asking about these recently.
Having got my new bass today I can totally understand your excitement. I'll wait a week or so before posting a review of mine. Enjoy!
  10.
what ebay fiasco?...you can't leave it at that we love fleabay stories!
Thought I bought a Lakland Skyline Decade from a seller but he never sent it and asked me to do allsorts with money to get it to his account. I used Paypal so was saved by them. The sellers name was AnthonyJamesMurray or AnthonyMurray, keep an eye out. eBay told me they dealt with him but wouldn't tell me what they meant by dealt with. Anyway, I am more than happy with my G&L, it looks good and plays good too. g
  11. Got her home today after waiting years for funds to become available. She plays like a dream. The guys at Guitar Guitar did a fine job, adjusting the action til I was happy enough to take her home. Sounds amazing though my Ampeg BA115, though not as amazing as through the Mesa Boogie M3 Carbine in the booth in the shop. anyone fancy a jam?!
  12.
Wotever
Hello As I am now the proud new owner of a brand new bass that I have just been playing for a couple of hours, can I now bring this thread to a close? I have taken a couple of photo's which I will post in another (unpopular) thread that has already made an appearance further up this thread. Cheers, Garry
  13.
Dont sweat about it, its a friendly forum and no one seem to hold grudges 9for too long). Saying that, its coming up to a year since i PM'd a certain prominent member in this thread and never got a reply ;-)
Thanks. Reason prevails. Now, I am about to go to the post office then for a walk. Then I am going to sort out a leaky gutter. Then I am going to Glasgow for the PRS evening. I wont be on here all afternoon/evening... Cheers, Garry
  14.
Yep, kinda thought that too
Sorry lads, I don't come on here to make people, or myself, unhappy, annoyed or anything else. I am a happy person. I joined Basschat as a discussion forum, not for people to say I couldn't be arsed keeping them up to date. Saying someone "can't be arsed" is a grumpy statement. If someone comes at me grumpy, I'll be grumpy back. I don't even like being grumpy. The internet (and therefore, discussion forums like Basschat), for all it's plus points, is something that isn't available to all people 24/7. Sonmetimes it isn't possible for people to have access to a thread for a few days. Who cares? What matters most, is that there are people, like you, out there willing to give help due to past experiences. I wouldn't say my eBay buy was badly thought out, a little naive maybe, but it is a market place where people sell items, and I thought the bloke was selling an item, so I paid him some money in a protected way. Sorry, Beedster, I am glad for the helpful and informative messages you sent me, but there is no need to get grumpy by saying I couldn't be arsed getting back to you guys and there is definitely no need to bring my badly thought through eBaying antics into it! I was stung, plain and simple. Sawtooth on the other hand has kept it nice light hearted, and quite creative. I am happy with the G&L, but am waiting for the money to land in my bank before I pick it up from GuitarGuitar. Deposit paid. I was told by Paypal that the money would be back in on the 8th, but they got that wrong too! This is the most typing I have ever done on a discussion forum and all a bit silly. Cheers, Garry PS: I'm off to the PRS charity night in Glasgow tonight, should be cool.
  15.
Shame the OP couldn't be arsed to reply to this thread given that we all helped him sort it here and via PM.......
Hello, Firstly, THANK YOU to everyone who gave input to this eBay mess. I do appreciate the feedback I was given, that was my whole point of posting here isn't it!? Especially thanks to Beedster who I chatted with via PM's and who alerted me to the dodginess in the first place, and who got grumpy because I never posted here for a few days. Secondly, I like to think of myself as a fair and honest person, so I was definitely going to wrap up this thread with a thank you when things were eventually sorted out, which they still aren't. I've been away with the missus and the dog for a few days and thought I'd post good news (re, buying an actual guitar from a shop) which took me ages using my mobile phone, even though it's really quite a good phone. Is there an App for Basschat?! Can't believe I feel I have to justify myself to a bunch of people I don't even know! So, Paypal today say they have taken money back from Anthony Murray (who continued to try and get me to pay him outside of Paypal in many different ways until yesterday) and are transferring it back to me as quickly as the banking system allows. It should be in my account tomorrow or Wednesday. Finally, give a guy a break and stop jumping on bandwagons. If there's no news to post what's the point in making extra effort to post?! A second "finally", don't ever try and buy anything from Anthony James Murray, Anthony Murray or Ann Murray if their names crop up on eBay. THANKS, Garry
  16.
Handsome. Hope you enjoy. I think G&L's are very very nice instruments.
Wow, what's your surname? I too am Garry Mac, except with two r's and Macdonald!
  17. Hello, Well, after the eBay fiasco and a slight moment of GAS towards a Shuker Satinline, I went to Guitar Guitar today and bought this: http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/bass_guitars...=09090913215538 Can't wait til the weekend. I was really looking for the Custom with the carved body but I didn't get on with the gloss neck. The satin one on the one I've chosen was much much nicer for me to play. The fingerboard is maple and appears to be slightly birdseye. I'll post some photo's after the weekend. Also tried a blueburst with rosewood fingerboard. The woodgrain didn't show through as much and more importantly it weight three and a half tonnes more! Also played another Lakland 44-01 but compared to the G&L the neck was much thinner (depth) and narrower (width at nut). with my big hands the G&L just suited me better. Anyone got a machine that can take me to the weekend? g
  18.
Yup carved top, I can't stop looking at it
Hope you get what you're after. Just played one and it is a gorgeous bass. Was amazed by the variety of tones available and how much easier it was to dial in than the Lakland 4401 I was comparing it to. Cheers, g
  19.
I'm having to sell a few of my basses and this was last in so first out, absolutely first class condition with a low action and no faults. This is the more expensive 3 colour sunbust model that sells for £700 now so this is a bargain at £430 delivered. Will come in a hard case too although not G&L. Thanks for looking.
PM sent.
  20.
Hi all, I just want to respond to a couple of points raised here. Spacing is 100mm between the centre of each pup to the next. The 5-string version is not out yet and maybe a couple of months away. One of the reasons for the price being lower than your typical hand built Shuker bass is the standardising of the finish and materials used. Not everyone will ever agree on the same colour of the body etc. Nor the fingerboard wood. But then there aren't enough being made to satisfy everyone! We quite like the idea of changing the finish colour each year, so 2011 is the year of the Amber Tiger There may come a time when more variety is offered but until then we have what we have. It's been a pleasure to bring a new option to bass guitarists, albeit in limited numbers to a lucky few. Thanks, Phil
Personally I think it looks amazing, the aesthetics are sport on with the trans orange with black hardware. How does the neck compare to say a Fender Jazz, as I don't think I could try before I buy? The fingerboard radius is pretty flat...what are the advantages there? Also, are there any sound clips out there? Finally, what's the lead time from order to posting? g
  21. Hello, I am getting over my eBay nightmare and looking for other options: Anyone tried one of these Shuker Satinlines and how does the build quality and playability compare to a Lakland 4401? http://www.bassgear.co.uk/products-page/sh...nline-4-string/ I think it looks amazing. g
  22.
That great news Garry. If you get the bass, for peace of mind, get some pics up on here pretty sharpish so that the experts can verify it's the real deal. Something tells me you'll be getting a refund though
I'm thinking the same as you. However when I asked for the serial number he gave me one. I got GuitarGuitar in Edinburgh to find out if it was real. It is. I suppose there's more than one way to get your hands on a serial number though. I'll post again when something happens. Cheers, g
  23.
All sounded very fishy. Some salutary lessons about not adhering to strange payment requests and investigating items. Hope this works out in the end.
Hello. Should have just bought second hand from here! Never mind, life goes on. the latest is that Paypal have given him 10....8 now....days to get the bass to me. On the 11th day the funds get automatically transferred back to my bank account. Thank Geddy for that! funny thing is that the guy is still texting me spouting me nonsense. Thanks for all the kind interest that has been shown here....lessons for everyone new to eBay shopping like me! Garry
  24. If he lists again, keep away. I have ended up raising a concern with him via eBay and Paypal. I won the auction, agreed to pick up, then when I tried to pick up he changed the selling conditions (bank account problems apparently!) and made it impossible to get in contact with him to sort things out. My feeling is that he may have fake buyers for those previous bass guitars. I spoke to the other person that has left negative feedback and she had the same problem. g
  25.
You will be leaving negative feedback... yes? It's the only way to ensure he doesn't keep pulling the stunt and he can't neg you.
I left negative feedback (saying I was worried) only to receive a rather aggressive message from Mr Murray. I don't think he likes negative feedback. I'm trying my hardest not to swear here or call him all the names under the sun. All I did was try and buy a guitar. Society sucks sometimes, there are too many bottom feeders.
