The 4x8 combo is a beast. I used to own one. About 42kg IIRC, I put castors on it... 2 vales in the pre, solid state power amp. Will sound similar to the Commando coz of the preamp in the Commando basically being a solid state (FET) version of the valve pre in the 4x8. HTH
Hi Merton, Saw your for sale thread on that amp, think I'm about 2 years late to see if its still for sale! Did you ever play on the 15 version for comparison?
Indeed! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=125690
Nice cab,and nice castors unfortunately a little excessive for my needs!
Some are all valve. The number of valves ranges from 2 to 8 in different models as I understand it. And TE never really went down the "lightweight" route!
Ha! clearly, but im still young(ish) and my back is still ok(ish) so i think i can handle it!.....and there's always castors.
The V-type amps contain varying numbers of valves, rather than the non V-type ranges which are all solid state. The amps are pretty sought after and often go for high prices when they come up. The V-type cabs (one of which I am selling) were designed to bring out the best in the V-type amps. Again, they are not common and look rather different to the "standard" Trace cabs - green carpet covering, sparkly grillcloth instead of (or as well as) the standard punched steel black powder coated grill plates.
Are they purely valve or valve pre's? The one i was looking at on ebay is a 4x8 which seems quite interesting, dont think i have ever seen a 4x8 combo! also just looked up the weight....... .....which doesnt concern me but there must be a shed load of "stufff" inside these combos!

I was recently given a small trace elliot combo,it didn't look like much and sat at my house for a couple of weeks before i even turned it on,and then the other night i went round to a friends for a bit of a jam and WOW it sounded amazing.....i am literally astounded how good it sounded,so much so that i now feel i want one of their bigger combo's but i know nothing about them! The one i have is a commando,100 watts (seems a hell of a lot louder) and says made in uk on the back, very simple controls (a real positive in my eyes) I was looking on ebay at v types and a few others but have literally no idea what i am looking at,any trace elliot aficionados out there happy to share some info would be greatly appreciated.
I have one of these at home that's carpet covered and in mint condition,no idea of age though, are you interested in buying one?
In fact scrap that,I just took this round to a friends to have a bit of a jam and wow, this amp is awesome! I was given this by a guy who is basically a stranger to me who I met at a barbecue and it's possibly the best amp I have ever heard,I haven't really got much experience with trace gear is it all this good?!
Looks okay to me. Forty quid's a steal. I'd be tempted to go and have a look if I was in Northampton.
I live near Northampton, if you all wanna chip in I will go get it then we can all share it!
I generally have a fleeting sand between coats, otherwise you will start to build up an orange peel effect. Generally you can tell if it's ready for sanding the second the paper hits it - water will help if you are a bit premature. I stop at 4-5 coats in a day then let it cure for a day at least, usually more. Leaving your neck in a warm dry place will help bring down curing times. It's never too early to get out the 600 grade, it's just the rough precursor to the 1000+ grades.
You can say that again! Thanks for the advice, tbh it's actually a really good finish as is,I'm just wanting to flatten out where the decal is.

I'm currently refinishing a neck using an acrylic lacquer, its all going pretty well but i want to wet and dry to level it out before the next coat of lacquer and need to know how long should i let it dry for? i gave it about 4/5 coats yesterday at 20 minute intervals and it starting to look real nice but i don't want to screw it up by cracking out the 600 grade to early!

I think it's to prevent the cable kinking at 90 degrees, which would put pressure on it knackering the cable ( but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to correct my ramblings with the "actual" reason!)
Al Healey was kind enough to PM me a link to this diagram I've never wired a speakon before so don't know how this would translate to that from 1.4" jacks
Standard speakons just have a sleeve and tip the same as a jack so the only difference is the picture!
-
Sorry to hijack but could the same could be done with 2 8ohm speakers bringing them down to 16ohms?… and is it possible to run 2 lots of those normally bringing it back to eight?

How to tell difference between Fender Japan "62JB" and "62JB-US?"

"USA pickups equipped with serious tone and the characteristic deep, reverse roll pegs Maniac specifications" that's what I thought -

I have a standard jap 62 re issue and a non export and the only thing I can think of is the tuners, the ones on the non export (62jb-us) they are larger at tge bushings, basically they are the same size as the us ones,do you have any pics of the bass? Btw I amby no means an expert on this and someone who actually knows what their talking about will be along shortly! -
Traded Jays 62 ri fretless for my markbass amp, couldn't have gone smoother, a top bloke to deal with, comes highly recommended.

Wow both of those came up really good...so what's the pros and cons of nitro vs acrylic then?!
No, not tried it yet but I had him saved as a seller for future reference. I may at some time refinish the neck on my Squier P/J - I don't really like satin finishes and would like a darker, glossy look - so this seemed like a good source.
Must admit i prefer a gloss finish...not sure how confident i am doing an entire neck though

Have you dealt with him before and done this sort of work yourself btw?

I recently purchased a vmj from a fellow basschatter who had applied a new waterslide decal on the headstock but it hasn't had a finish put on top of it, if i leave it as is i think the decal will in time get damaged and the rest of the headstock will discolour in a different way. Its a matt effect varnish and im guessing polyurethane but i dont know where to source such a thing, also any tips on application would be much appreciated!
I'm surprised people still buy cases like the one in the OP, given that you can get a Hiscox (which, to be blunt, is a 'proper' case) for seventy quid...
I had a hiscox a year or so ago with my aerodyne precision, definitely a nice case but the bass seemed to move around a bit too much inside,i think I'm gonna get this sent back and get a couple more of these as i have one already, and although they are a tad on the big and expensive side they fit a jazz like a dream, and i have 3 jazzes so these should stack nicely together!
