1. Black or red for me. And what is a Boltener doing so far south, usually we don't venture pass Manchester, theres no need we have verything we could possibly want here
2. I saw a punk band in a local very small pub. The bassist was wireless so he would pop to the bar mid song and order a pint, then he'd go out side and chat with the smokers. He made loads of mistakes and missed cues but it didnt matter because they where terrible anyway.
3. +1 to the Ed Friedland blues book. I go to Stevie ray Vaughn for my blues fix (get the essential collection) and for a more abstract Blues rock I go for Cream. Check out Booker T and the MGs for Donald Dunns awesome lines (also plays the bassin the Blues Brothers stuff)
4.
The Bass Bible by Paul Westwood is fantastic. Includes 2 CDs that have a number of examples of his work. The book includes scales, arpeggios, chord sheets, notated phrases (including styles from African/Cuban/Latin through to Motown) and has a range of technical sections (looking at Fretless, Slap etc) and even a section with notated solos. Also accompanied by tab. This was recommended by my Bass tutor when I first took lessons and it really helped me to understand the context of bass within a range of ensembles and settings. Just look at the contents page and you can see how in depth and useful this book can be! Hope this helps! http://www.amazon.com/dp/3927190675
I've just got this book. Haven't started it yet but it looks great for learning new styles and opening up at any page to play something else for a change. Definatly one for the library but I didn't find it very helpful with theory becasue its in TAB which I can't help myself from reading.
5. My generation - The Who. Simply becasue its a bass standard I never learned. Can't seemed to get those string bends high enough so opted for the slide instead.
6. I think its cool to watch and I love watching other people do it but I'm just not into music that requires it. I like heavy rock, prog rock and metal. The only slap bass in rock that I like is early Incubus and some Chilis. I went through Ed Friedlands Slap Bass DVD which taught me a few basics and I like to have a jam in E every now and again but thats about it. I have a hard enough time just playing in finger style and I'll never use it a live performance unless I'm covering some chili peppers or something. I have my moments where I'll feel like I should learn the style and I'll learn a few riffs but in general I think I'll leave it to the pros.
7. That Ibanez SR500/505 looks sooo nice!
8. I play a yamaha and love it. it may be worth checking them out as you can get decent basses for under 400. Have a look on the yamaha we site for the RBX series. The BB series is good also but I dont know if they do a 5 string config. Also one of the best 5 strings I played was a MM SUB. Don't know if they still produce them anymore though Also i was thinking of getting a Vintage 4 string. I've heard good things about them. The guitarist in my band worked as a teacher at the local music shop and the Vintage guitar range literally fly of the shelves, they can't get them in quick enough.
9. I wouldn't worry about getting the fills correct note for note. I would go over all the fills then put the music away and play from memory adding your own stamp to it, thats why i love playing this tune. Enjoy!
10. Hello Finland! Aren't all Finish musicians into Black Metal?
11. I don't use them as much as I should, hammer ons yet, not pull offs. I've never seemed to be very good at them. Its something I defo should practice more.
12. John Myung but I've been playing around With James Jamerson tunes lately and to me he's the epitome of groove. Just hope some of it rubs of on to me.
13. Hi all Many bassist on the forum buy Squiers and rave about them, so are they better than Fenders? Are they the same quality and playability? Whats the difference in materials? And if blind folded would you really know the difference? I really wanna know as I'm not a Fender/Squier owner and I'm feeling a little bit of GAS though I haven't got much money. I suppose the main question is when you play a really good Squier do you think 'But its a Squier' similar to 'But its a Skoda'? I'm not the sort of person that has to have the most well known bass and the latest and greatest, in fact I'm looking at buying a Vintage bass which do copys of Fenders but to really high quality (apparently the guitars are top notch). This is wrong to say, but I feel better about buying a Vintage than a Squire. If you have a Squier do you secretly wish it was a Fender?
14. I'd say tuning down as he uses alot of open string notes as walkups/down. Love Duffs bass lines.
15. If only I had an ounce of your talent! Was'nt to sure about the drum and bass at first but quickly adjusted my prog rock one track mind. Its a style I've never ventured into and I don't think I ever will but have always loved to watch.
16. Just put it in plane view and If its anything like my missus she won't notice for a good month. Or strip naked and get in bed with it, when your missus comes home just look helpless and say 'it just happened...' Is it semi acoustic? Whats the purpose of the S holes?
17. El Bajo

Heya

Welcome. Good influences! I'm gratley influenced by them also
18. I've got 2 but the Hamer P bass has a bowed net so its relegated to the bedroom. I would like to get a new passive 4 string as my main bass is and active 6 string, mainly for use on classic rock covers, but I'll only get a cheap and cheerful one.
19. If I was in your position I would get a list ofthe most common cover songs bands play and get to work, that will take a while in its self. Get a part time job in a bar or whatever and start making some money to buy a 200W combo. Hopefully it should only take you a few months, at the same time look for some jam nights in your area to test out some of your newly learned songs. One you have your combo, new set of songs, and a little experience playing life go for it. If you are attractive enough (in a bass playing way, looks are for singers and lead guitarists ) to a band, the band should offer you a lift. I know I would. There are plenty of classic rock cover bands out there that wopuldnt be fazed about piercings, etc. In fact it may help you get the gig! Best of luck
20. Mark Kings slap style sounds more technical and precise. When watching flea live he seems to just tw@t it and hope for the best. Having said that I really like Fleas finger style bass lines, I think they have a lot of feel and are very thoughtful. And having said ALL of that I'm not really into the Chillis either. But as mentioned previously Fleas Mars Volta stuff is great so I'm going for Flea.
21. Thanks Jennifer, fatback for your very kind comments. mrhectic, wait until you do your guitar, it may sound even more dry than the bass (but thats for another forum). Just make sure you stick around for the mixing, how many professional bands do you know where the album mix isnt quite right and the bass is buried under guitars, or the drums sound to much like they have triggers, etc etc
22. I play a 6 string but I agree with you on the addition of a C string. It opened so many melodic possibilities and chords. Its a good decision, especially if your a lazy person like me and like to have all the notes under your fingers If you find the C string a bit trebly try a Rotosound, it really cuts through.
23. Nice one, best of luck. Now sign of and nail those songs!!!
24. My engeneer asked the same of me also. He wanted the option of EQ the bass himself as well as the guitar. He even asked me not to use my overdrive on the sections that required and that he'll use some bass effects he has on software which I'm fine about because I hate my overdrive pedal (to skint to by another). He sent me a copy of where hes up to so far, theres no vocals or keys yet but you can hear that it all sounds a bit trebly and dry which he will mix when everythinsg recorded. http://www.mymusicstream.com/raisingangels/ I wouldn't worry about it but i would ask for a progress update of where he is so far and maybe sit in on the mixing of a track so that your both on the same wavelengh
