Hi. I have an EHX Bass Balls pedal (Nano version). It's a bit of a silly effect, but I like it. Occasionally. However, mine has recently taken to bahving oddly. When the effect is engaged, if I tap on the pedal casing, the tapping sound is amplified very distinctly through my rig. Odd, no? I mean, it basically seems to be behaving like a microphone. What's going on? The pedal is basically working ok otherwise, as long as I use battery power. It now wont work on mains tho - the bypass works, but when I switch on the effect the sound goes dead. Would welcome your advice.... Cheers.

Hello.. I use a MB LMK amp. Love it. But I have a question about the effects loop, which I haven't used much in the past. I've found an effect I'd like to use occasionally - EHX Bass Balls (I have the Nano version). And I like it in the loop, rather than in the line between instrument and amp, as the effect is then a bit more subtle. A lot more subtle in fact. But - the problem I'm having with it is that the pedal doesn't have an output level control, and there's a huge diiference in it's output between on and bypass. Consequently I can't switch the effect in and out within a song when playing live, without simultaneously adjusting the input gain on the amp - which is of course basically impossible. Anyone have any helpful suggestions? Would be glad to hear them if so.... Cheers.
Hi I use TIs, and they are great! But, what are your recommendations for a 5 string bass? I have seen these: http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/products/15...5_string_43_118
Never tried the Thomastiks myself, but I've used D'Addario Chromes, La Bella flats and Rotosound Tru-Bass nylon flats on my five string instruments. The Rotosound nylons are my personal faves, and I continue to use them now I've switched to playing a 4 string instrument. But I thought the La Bellas made a great sound too - rich and warm, but characterful - not just fat and smooth. I generally found the Chromes a bit bright for my liking, but I liked the sound when I played them with a gentle fingerstyle (I'm habitually rather more heavy handed and excitiable tho!). Try the Tru-bass if you haven't already is my recommendation. Would be interesting to hear from anyone who might have tried a five string set of DR Black Beauties (they are flats aren't they?) - I believe Alan Gorrie of The Average White Band uses them and I love the sound he gets.

I love fret buzz. I use Rotosound Tru-bass nylon flats, with a low action on my Jazz bass, and love the resulting dirty, gritty, percussive sound.
£739 new? Not much of a knockdown on price for an 18 month old, 'well-used' amp! I appreciate they may be 'rare' second hand....
Because it's worth it. But as I said above, I'm open to lower offers. And as I also said above, I can't currently find it anywhere for £739 anyway. £765 is best I've seen at the mo. I'm sure someone will put me right on that if they find otherwise tho! Thanks for your interest.

Hi. I'm interested in the new Markbass cabs - just wondering whether anyone out there has firsthand experience of any of them yet? I'm particularly interested in the Club Series 151, Club Series 212, New York 151 and New York 804. I currently have a New York 604 which I love, but need a second cab to bring the rig up to size for some larger venues. Would be grateful for your help... Cheers.

Hello. I'm considering parting with this truly excellent, much loved little combo in order to afford a second MB cab for my gigging rig. It's well used - I've used it for home practice almost every day, and sometimes for band practices (it's capable of amazing loudness if you need it) in combination with an extension cab when necessary. But it's in absolutely perfect working order, and in immaculate nick - there are no scratches, dents, tears or even scuff marks on it. It's got a bit of household dust on it, but that's all! I got this new from Darren The Bass Merchant about 18 months ago. I was going to buy the even tinier Micro Mark, but they sent me this "by mistake" (I begin to wonder now whether it wasn't just a devious sales trick!), and having tried both I couldn't resist! It's just So Good. The sound is amazing (even with my five string basses), and it's so light, robust, well designed, discreet in the living room at home, very easy to carry around and yet totally up to the job in the studio or for small gigs (even without an extension cab). I really don't want to see it go at all. But with some larger scale gigs (some outdoors) coming up in the summer, I need a second cab for my LMK rig, and I just can't afford one without selling this. Best price I've seen these for new is £739. I've never seen one second hand anywhere - on BC, ebay or wherever (if you saw one on BC earlier this year, it was probably this one, when I was having to consider selling it before) - so I reckon this is a pretty rare opportunity... I can't imagine being tempted to let this go for much less than £650 (as I know I'll almost certainly have to buy new again when I'm able to replace it) tho' it would depend a bit on how easy the collection/delivery/payment arrangements etc might be... Willing to discuss lower offers if you want to try me tho. Not looking for trades, unless you happen to have some very specific Markbass gear to discuss - New York 604, New York 804, New York 15 (or 12 maybe), Mark Bass Club 151 Let me know if you're interested anyway - always happy to chat bass gear.... Cheers.

Hi. I love Rotosound tru-bass nylon flatwounds. But I recently ordered a medium scale set by mistake, instead of long scale. As I didn't notice til after I'd started putting the G and D strings on my instrument, I can't return them. (I havent cut them to length, but did get as far as putting tension on the strings, so the G and D are coiled from being wound round the tuning pegs). The E and A haven't even been out of thier packets. These cost me £22.50 from Stringbusters. Plus postage. Anyone give me £17.50 for them? Or maybe trade for other strings/speakon lead/jack lead/ other bits and bobs.... Cheers, Al

Oh how I wish I'd never sold these two. Massive. Heavy. Wobbly wheels. I didn't even get much for them. But standing in front of them on a stage was like standing in front of a weather system - felt like you could almost lean on the sound, like you can lean on a strong wind... And they looked like they meant f**king business too. Ah well...

Thanks for these replies. Sounds very much as I expected. I think it's just one of those things in life you have to say Yes to while the opportunity is there, so I'll go for it if I get the call. What's the worst that can happen eh? No one's going to die. Unless I'm reeeeeeally bad...
I haven't done any session stuff (although I will be on Monday!), but from many conversations with a number of local musos over recent months, I can confidently say that there are a lot of guys doing session work who have barely a fraction of your knowledge and experience. Plus, with your positive and open attitude which comes across in your original post, I reckon you'll be absolutely fine. This of course, is probably no help whatsoever.
Thanks for your reply Hot Tub - It's definitely encouraging at least! What's involved for the session you're doing on Monday then? Do you know what music you'll be playing? How did you get it? Good luck with it anyway. Cheers, Al

Hello - I'm seeking the advice of any players who do session work. I reckon I'm a fairly competent player - I mean, I'm no Jaco, but I can get around the instrument, I'm experienced in playing a variety of different music styles, and I can read music (because I trained years ago as classical musician....but that's another story). And I have lots of experience of the recording process in both professional classical music, and with good amateur bands. But I'm not sure either of these would prepare me for pro session bass playing. I've played in a few bands over the last few years, and take my music-making seriously - but always for the pleasure of it, rather than for money so far. I recently tried out for a band that included a couple of pro session players (drummer and guitarist), and the drummer has just asked me whether I'd like him to put my name forward for some session work. I'm flattered of course, and want to say yes really, as it seems like a great opportunity. But I'm apprehensive too - not wanting to make a complete tit of myself if I find out the hard way that actually I'm not of the expected standard! I also worry about it reflecting badly on him if I turned out to not be up to it. So what I'd really like to know is how sessions work in practice. Eg would you usually expect to get the music in advance, so you can have a look at it before going in to a studio? Or are you expected to just turn up and sight-read on the spot? That's my biggest concern really - I'm pretty confident of being able to learn stuff well, but under pressure I'd worry about being able to deliver a great bassline from a standing start... Any comments or observations from those with firsthand experience would be very welcome. Cheers.
I also want to see this
I think you should seek out a third 810 - then you could arrange them on stage like a little Stonehenge monument. Basshenge.
There is a certain magic hidden in a Bongo bass, soundwise it is a killer bass. The secret is in the combination of the wood used for the body which is Basswood and the 18 Volts 4 band EQ preamp plus the Neodymium pickups. The results of all these factors makes it a bass which is difficult to fault, in both sound and playability. Definately one of the best bass of the Ernie Ball range, I repeat one of the best, not the best. Personally I thought it was THE best until I bought their 25th Anniversary HSS. The Bongo's neck is another secret weapon which is unique to the Ernie Ball range, in fact this is the only EB bass with 24 frets and a radius unique to this bass that makes it so incredibly comfortable to play that every time you picked it up after having played a different bass, you can't help go: "Oh yeah!" As mentioned the pickups are the powehouse that makes this bass break through through the muddies of band mixes. Neodymium is a new very powerful magnet, also used in new amp speakers. Very responsive and in this bass they work wonderfully. FACT: Not everyone is fond of it's shape and headstock - BUT - everyone who I know has tried one has ended up buying it or live a life of misery and GAS withering illness. Here's mine:
All well and good, but I notice you keep yours under a tree in the garden. Is that because it's too ugly to be allowed in the house? Personally I'd have put a bag over it so the tree doesn't get upset.
I'm a firm believer in having the right tools for the job & that's often worth paying a little bit extra for, rather than 'the cheapest you can find in the world' from cheap jack shops! They often don't fit properly anyway & you'll end up with knackered screws. Here's a link to the good sort: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hexagon-Allen-Key-Sc...=item23055b914b If it's a standard Fender bridge it should be a 1/16" some like the BadAss are 1/20" or .05" Cheers, John
Thanks for that - I'll check it out. I'm of the same mind when it comes to tools - especially when even the most expensive allen key can't presumably be all that expensive! Cheers.

Have a Bump on me for a beautiful looking instrument. But GNNNRRRRaaaargh - why are all these fantastic looking distressed Sandbergs that keep cropping up on BC recently all 5 strings? So frustrating. If this was a 4 I'd sell my children to buy it. Well, ok, perhaps not the kids, but definitley the cat. And the car. Good luck with the sale. And please don't post any sound clips demonstrating just how lovely this thing sounds, or I may have to consider buying it despite myself...

I bought a 2009 US Fender Jazz recently on this site - it's great and I love it - but it didn't come with case or any case candy. So I consequently don't have the allen keys to fit the bridge intonation and action height adjusters. I've tried loads of my own, and tho I can kinda get them to work none fits perfectly. What's going on there? Do Fender make them to their own "special" size, just so you have to buy theirs perhaps? Happy to do so if necessary - where can I get them from? Or if they are a standard size after all, can anyone enlighten me as to what they are? Thanks for your help...
Still looking to get this shifted, anyone?
Well, I'm still kinda interested - but as we've already established that you're not interested in a trade for my New York 604 (fair enough, of course), I don't think I'm in a position to take u up on it right now...
It's an S1 - which at the time was a US standard. It used to be mine and it's a corker - no issues and very light. I only let it go because I fancied Simon's Thumb and I've already got a few Jazzes. Free bump mate!
OK, that's a bit clearer - thanks. Now what about that S1 switch..?
