1.
When I was looking for a similar item, I ended up with the Marshall MB15. It seemed to have better handling of the lows than many others I tried, plus it has 2 channels, modern and classic, the classic being nice and warm and valvey, with gain control, so you can sound like Lemmy, if required. The modern channel has a compressor. Nice sized little piece of kit, and surprising on the volume - never above 2 in my living room, which for 15 watts - well I don`t think thats bad.
thanks for that, is MB 15 a bass or lead combo? had considered guitar combo's for quiet house use but didn't know if bass (just 4 string not 5) would kn@cker it? thanks Nick.
2. I'm looking for a reasonable combo to use to practice at a friends house inbetween rehearsals that is easy to chuck in the car and go. My requirements are; up to £70 max, fairly small and light (max size 10 inch cube ish), loud enough for jamming with one electric guitar (telecaster clean sound), reliable with reasonable build, I have considered the Ashdown Tourbus 10 & 15, anybody got any opinions on these good or bad? Also have considered a guitar combo (Laney, Marshall etc.) as volume is not a major issue, any opinions with that approach? Suggestions of combos to buy and avoid much apreciated, Cheers, Nicky.
3.
I have a squier Jazz that I have upgraded the pegs to the full size open back type that had to have the larger holes drilled out but it really is worth it IMO as I also have the Squier P and it wont hold in tune if played with vigour for long at all (they will also be swapped soon). If someone can enlarge the holes for you I would do the swap at the same time its not hard and wont cost any more cash. Mine are just ebay ones and they are just as good as the ones on my EB Musicman now, Job done
........do you have a link please or a seller name, cheers.
4. Hope somebody can advise, a friend of mine has bought a Squier presision, not sure if its a VM or CV, second hand and the tuners are damaged (I think it had fallen over as one is missing) and the 3 are not working particually well. He asked me if he should replace them with a set from ebay that are about £16 or go for an upgrade i.e. slightly better set. Now I have a fretless VMJ and to me the stock tuners work fine,..... so would the ebay set be ok for his precision or would an upgrade be better, if the latter what should he be looking at? I don't think he'll want to spend a fortune as the bass cost him £140. thanks Nick.
5. yeh, the reviews on the old site were invaluable, sometimes when sites are updated the old site can still be accessed? hope so!!!
6. Is it just me being dumb, but where has the old 'Harmony Central' reviews gone?
7. Sold a bass to Chris, very easy and friendly transaction, very good communications, thanks and enjoy it! Cheers, Nick.
8. My local specsavers want nearly £200 for moulded earplugs, is this reasonable? I know you only get one pair of ears but, as they need to be moulded, buying online is not possible. As I live 'out in the sticks' shopping around becomes difficult, any suggestions? cheers.

10.
The Affinity has the small sealed tuners whilst the Standard has open gear style ones. The A has a alder body and the S has a agathis body if I remember right. What differance this makes, I couldn`t tell you. Possibly better quality of maple used for the neck? I have owned a couple of Affinity`s, a black one and a lovely 2 t sunburst and they are decent enough basses. And you can pick em up for about £60 s/hand. Jez
I thought I have seen some pics of Affinity's with full size open back tuners. Infact a mate had a Affinity P-Bass in about 2003 and i'm 99% sure it had large open back tuners. With regard to the jazz, anyone know if the pickups/electronics are the same in both basses? cheers for advice so far, Nick.
11. Apart fron the £50 or so, can anybody enlighten me on the differences between the Squier Affinity series basses and the Squier Standard series basses. Where does the extra £50 go? Is the neck the same? Over on the USA Talkbass forum there is a lot of love for the Affinity's, just curious for a friend, cheers, Nick
12.
Accept this is one of the risks of trading internationally and complete the sale in good faith with a minimum of complication?
+1 on this, also this happened to me once, in that the guy paid the correct ammount in Euro's, but my bank stung me for £20 in charges to convert it, also the Pound to Euro rate differs at your bank when your converting (always in banks favour). As many have said £18 on £850 isn't that bad considering.
13. Pics of Glenn using a Squier Jazz in Norway 2006 http://www.glennhughes.com/tourpix_rocktheboat2006.html
14. I've got a mint condition Ibanez SR500 soundgear bass i'm thinking of selling on here. It cost me £420 new. It's not that I dont like it, it's just I always use my Squier jazz and I need a new cab so could do with the money. When I say mint I mean perfect, no dings, scratches, buckle rash, fret wear just beautifull, I will be willing to post it, so what do you guys think it would be worth please? Cheers, NJ
15. thanks Mark, easy when you know how. cheers, NJ
16. Probably a dumb question but, I've got a cheap Qwik Tune electronic tuner that I got free with a bass many moons ago, now although it's not the best peice of kit it does it's job, or so I thought, but, I was just having a look at Harmony Central today when I pressed the wrong button and got tuners. It seems my tuner isn't very well regarded and is said to be wildly inaccurate, usually too sharp. So is there any way of testing it's accuracy at home, I dont have access to a known accurate pitch? thanks in advance, NJ
17. thanks guys, some good songs there, some i'd forgotten, I thought of ...Man on the silver mountain, Burn & Addicted to love. Any more? didn't want overplayed (all right now, smoke on...., paranoid) stuff, it's too predictable, yeh?
18. I am getting together with 3 members of my very first band to do 3 surprise gigs (private parties) as a sort of support act for the main band. We haven’t played together for many, many years and two of the new members (rhythm guitar and drums) of this venture, although competent musicians, are young guys who haven’t gigged before. So my question is this, can you suggest about 12 songs that are fun and easyish to play, usually go down a storm and that most age ranges (16 - 60) will have heard of? We want to play melodic rock, so obviously no death metal but not too poppy (sp?) either. We are just at the talking/jamming stage at the moment, the two young guys are both nervous and excited. I realize this is a bit of a long winded question but any advice would be gratefully received. Cheers, Nick.
19. I think it strange how black/black/maple precisions are talked on here very highly, with opinions like 'one of my fave P colour combos' and 'black/black with maple boards is one of the best...' etc and yet, Roger Waters name gets mentioned as a signature bass and all of a sudden its not so appealing! Granted, Roger is not the greatest bass player in the world (not the best bass player in the band) but, as a thinker, music arranger and song writer, the guys a genious. IMO of course, I like the bass. Nick
20.
looks like a Nash to me
yeh, after googling Nash basses, i'm sure your right, I had a good view of the logo and it matches ones on the Nash info site. Must admit i'm embaresed to say, i've never heared of them until now! The red Nash of Glenn's looked and sounded superb. Doesn't he normally use a Fender Jazz or more recently BB2024x? Agree with bottlebassman about Scott McKeon, very good. Nick.

http://www.glennhughes.com/tourpix_gh_uktour_092410.html
After looking at pics on his website, seems he's using this bass all the time, still don't know what it is tho? think it may have a drop d tuner on it. Nick

23. I went to see Glenn at Manchester last thursday and what a brilliant gig it was! I was looking forward to hearing and seeing the Yam BB2024 that he uses but Glenn was instead using a beat up old red with maple board precision type bass, not sure what it was? don't think it was a Fender logo, maybe an old Tokai? The sound was awesome, really funky and powerfull with loads of overdrive. Anyone know what the bass was? cheers, Nick.
24.
did you ever find out if there are VMJ scratchplates about?
Hi, no I didn't exactly, although I took a chance and bought one on ebay and with a little bit of filing round the neck pocket & control plate it now fits perfectly. Secret was taking my time and being a bit of a perfectionist (nerd). My opinion was, if I bought one and it was nowhere near fitting I would sell it on, guess I got lucky....... although I bought a brand new allparts black pearle one for a CV jazz and it doesn't fit, so i'll have to sell that one!
