1. What do you mean by an 'open centre'?
2. I'm an artist, so I thought I'd wade in here and see if I can help. The problem is, I can't Despite alot of theorising, absolute definitions are lacking - especially as definitions of art are mutable and changing. What's considered to be art now would not necessarily have had the same title applied to it 100 years ago. That said, the least that can be said of it is that it is a creative process, and in that sense in includes a wide variety of human endeavours. It's just that human beings stratify those process into different values and the perception of these changes over time. This isn't just the case with 'high' art - it applies to music, design, and various other disciplines. Certain sections of society have the power to make definitions, but it's up to the rest of society as to whether they also apply those rules. Alot of the time it does boil down to apparent worth in terms of the response it creates in the percipient, but even that's open to interpretation.
3. Aha - thanks for that! At the moment the rod doesn't seem to like being tightened or loosened, so I wonder if it's okay. I rescued the bass from years of very bad neglect so I wonder if some of that it catching up with it now
4. Yes. The neck has to be removed before I can adjust it as the rod nut has a cross head at the bass of the neck, not an allen key nut.
5. Try as I might, I cannot get the truss rod in my Jazz to tighten. It seems possible to loosen it off a little (although it's not an easy job) but tightening it seems impossible. It hardly budges at all. Does this possibly mean that it's maxed out (and maybe I have to follow the instructions in the relevant thread) or is there some other problem involved? At the moment the neck has too much relief in it, and being a fretless it means that the action is too high and I'm getting marks appearing on the fingerboard. Any help much appreciated!
6. Tom, it's easy enough to order a truss rod key from Peavey. I got one from them last year and they were very helpful.
7. Will try and make it for the Walthamstow gig!
8. Very nice indeed. Shame it's out of my price range!
9. Soundslive are charging even less for the non-humbucker version...!
10. The all-black VM Jaguar Special is very tasty, as is the 'crimson transparent' one...!
11. Apparently so, although I've heard both and can't tell much difference
12. Stick some clips on YouTube
13. And it was set up a bit wrong too!
14.
The Natural ones just don't seem to reach the higher values, at the moment - sounds and feels the same. Hey Ho.
I've noticed that too - odd really!
15.
Personally I played one of these, bloody heavy but a savage tone. They play really nice too.
That was my T-40, wasn't it? Sounded marvellous through your rig
16. Nostalgia (with some good riffs)...
17.
If you use an unmarked board, get one where the side markers are where the frets would be, not between the fret positions. Or you can move the markers or get a luthier to do it.
But bear in mind that that set-up is a matter of preference. I prefer my fretlesses to have side markers in the same positions as a fretted bass. Either way, whichever sort you get Citymarnier, if it's unlined or unlined it isn't hard to get the hang of. Just a bit of time and patience as your brain, ears and fingers get used to things. As for tone, it depends on what you want to play - also whether you want to use a plectrum (as I occasionally do). They're like any other bass really, there's no mystique about it - just a bit more care
18. Argh! Don't tempt me Eric! Must resist...
19. I bought some D'Addario Chromes from Mart. Everything arrived spick and span - proper job
20. I've just bought a whole bunch of spare Pyramid flatwounds from Loweringthetone, all of which arrived nice and safe despite the crappy weather!
21. Bloody hell - it went for 600 quid....!
