1. It is, isn't it? I used it for rehearsals earlier this week and compared it back-to-back with my ash-bodied Warwick version. It has considerably more growl, a much darker voice all round. The verdict of the band was that I should use it from now on because there's no way the guitarist can encroach on my sonic territory!
2. I'll send you his address. He used to have lots of photos on his Facebook page, but I can't find them any longer.
3. I have yet to run it through my amp, but will do so at tonight's band rehearsal (first gig with my new band is the week after next, but I'll probably stay with my other Corvette for that one). Through the headphones it sounds just like a Corvette should. It's a bit heavier than the others, but as it's an exact clone (including the neck profile) if I close my eyes it feels exactly like the others. I had a fretless Corvette but didn't get on with it and sold it to finance this project...
4. The bass arrived at the weekend, so here it is in all its glory: A close-up of the multi-layered body: You can see the slightly-recessed control knobs (mainly to show off the layers). A view from the back: The back is slightly contoured to show off the different layers. The new neck looks good, although I will invest in a Warwick Just-a-nut as the one currently fitted is too low. I now have the makings of four Corvettes - two already built up, one needing a fair bit of hardware and the final one needing everything except the body!
5. I bought a Fender preamp from Sabian. The deal was quick and easy and the package arrived very quickly, even given the fact Sabian's son broke his arm, throwing his household out of kilter! Deal with Sabian with confidence.
6. Mine behaved in a similar way. It turned out to be the inrush current suppressor had come loose. Just a few bob for a local amp repair guy to fix.
7. Just watched it. Katmen is the band behind Imelda May. Remember the ace bass solo in Johnny Got a Boom Boom? That was him. The guitarist - Darryl Higham - is/was married to Imelda. I saw his band years ago in a support slot and (anorak warning) recognised his Peavey Rockingham signature guitar before he came on stage! Coupled with the fabulous George Thorogood it should be a fantastic show.
8.
I use one of these: http://www.amazon.co...edir_mdp_mobile Only has two settings: clean and overdriven, but both sound great
That's the one I use and I've been very pleased with it.
9. I used to use a Zoom, but it's no good for playing along to tracks I'm learning. I had to put earphones in (from the iPod) and then headphones over the top to hear the bass. Made my ears ache after a while, as the headphones pressed the earphones in. Maybe the modern ones have an aux input too? Now I use a Vox Amplug. It has two inputs, is tiny and the batteries seem to last for ages.
10. Last gig with my current band (I chose to leave for a variety of reasons, including song choice over which I have no say whatsoever). As could have been predicted it was probably the best gig we've ever played in terms of putting on a show and getting the crowd really going. A very hot and sweaty night with plenty of dancers for virtually every single song (including, it has to be said, some of those I hate playing). A sign of the times - a lady wanted to know where our next gig was. I ended up putting it into her iPhone as a calendar entry, complete with an alarm to remind her. The singer is taking up bass duties, so it'll be interesting to see how that changes his style. He's normally pretty active on stage.
11. I'm on the waiting list for several on the recycling pile and they all seem to have disappeared. On the other hand I have the Status Quo autobiography and no-one seems to want it after me!
12. Have a look in the recycling section. A few of those books already mentioned are doing the rounds on there.
13. I bought most of my basses through Basschat, but will think twice before selling them on here now, I'm afraid. As it happens, I did put several basses up for sale a few months ago (pre-fee and I didn't know the fee was to be introduced). The prices I asked were around the price I paid for them, so paying a fee does seem a bit harsh as I'm not looking to make a profit. As it was, only one sold. I'm in no hurry to sell the others, but the threads have been locked anyway, so I guess they'll quietly slip into the nether regions of the For Sale zone. My inclination now is to hold on to them and then put them on eBay for a higher price to help pay the commission. Who knows, I may even make a profit - something I was reluctant to do when selling to other Basschatters.
14.
I asked the guitarist (a very good player) what he thought. He just said; "It sounds great, but it sounds like you."
Would have been nicer if he'd said "...and it sounds like you."!
15. I always take a spare too, although I haven't broken a string in ten years. For the reasons stated, my back up is as close to the main bass as I can get (i.e. both Corvette $$s or USA Jazz and Aerodyne Jazz). Since suffering a few glitches with my Orange amp, I do now take two amps too. Both are wired to the cab and plugged in (although not both turned on at the same time). At my last gig, the Orange started playing up again, so I just pulled the lead out and put it into the Hartke (I'd sound checked using both so the sound wasn't too different from one another), switched it on and no-one even noticed (not even the rest of the band). The trouble is, my Orange has been behaving itself for the last two rehearsals, but how long dare I leave it before I stop taking a spare amp? I also take spare strings, by the way (am I paranoid?) and my toolkit lives on stage behind the cab. Came in useful a couple of gigs ago when the lead guitar suddenly realised he needed his capo for the next song and it was in the - locked - dressing room. Luckily I have one in my toolbox, even though I don't play guitar (it's handy to keep strings in place when adjusting the neck). The toolbox also has a torch which has come in handy more than once when setting up. Where do you stop?
16. I own a Fender Aerodyne Jazz for just this reason. I once tried a Fender Precision HotRod which is what I'd exchange my Aerodyne for if I could find one (I can't get on with Precision-width necks). Doesn't Fender also do a Japanese Precision with P/J pickups as well as the USA Precision Deluxe which has them too? From memory the Japanese one has a Jazz-width neck and the USA Deluxe has a neck that's slightly slimmer than a normal Precision. ...and that's only looking at Fender. When it comes to the secondhand market (and the lack of many of the above), either Fender doesn't sell many or the people who buy them hang onto them.
17. Alex has started on the new neck for the multi-layered one. He gave me a choice of neck woods: Sapele Walnut Maple Oak/maple sandwich He also put some of the hardware in place to give a better idea of the finished look
18. Even after a couple of years? I'll give it a go, thanks.
19.
Have you abused the BT? Why has it died? If it's not been your fault, then sack the warranty & take it back under your statutory rights. It's not a £30 amp & should be lasting much longer if it's been treated right.
No idea why it died. It's used once a week for rehearsals and once a month for gigs. It's always lived in its carry bag and rarely pushed beyond half volume.
20.
What cab are you using? Are you sticking with it?
I have a Zoot (1x12 4 ohm) or an Ashdown (4x10, 8 ohm). I don't use them at the same time, of course!
21.
Any reason to not just stick with the terror? You might have been unlucky with yours but in general they seem to be pretty reliable. Is it the reliability you're concerned with, not happy with the sound, or just fancy a change?
The only reason not to stick with it is I've lost confidence in it. I will send it back to Orange first, though and see what they say.
22. I think my Bass Terror has died. First the inrush current suppressor came loose, but when that was repaired the bass kept fading in and out. My local repair guy tells me it might be serious and I should send it back to Orange (it's a year or so out of warranty). Now, I like the sound of the Orange (warm, old-school, not too punchy and I never, ever slap), so which head should I consider as a replacement in case the Orange is too expensive to fix? Ampeg PF500 Ampeg SVT Micro VR Ashdown Little Bastard 30 Ashdown CTM 15 Ashdown MAG 300H Fender Rumble 350 head Gallien Krueger MB500 Ultra Light Head Marshall MB450H TC Electronic BH500 I should add that my backup amp is a Hartke HA2000 (200 watt) and it's almost flat out when I gig.
23. A stray one here!
