Why is C the 'first' note of the scale?
essexbasscat replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Theory and Technique
Thank you MacDaddy Do you know which instrument was the forerunner of well - tempered tuning ? I really did think the piano was involved in it somewhere, as I remember a seires of programmes about the history of music and the claim that the piano solved a number of problems around this issue. (doh -don't beleive what you see on t.v.) or is it alzheimer's creeping up on me again ? -

good 'un Al Heeley ! the piano was the successor to the harpsichord I think (if that's wrong - please someone say so) around the 1700's or so. The harpsichord wasn't tuned in 'even' intervals, which made it sound out of tune when played in certain keys ( the same way that if you tune a guitar to sound really nice in one key, it may sound not quite right in others). The answer to this awkwardness with changing keys was to invent an instrument tuned in 'even' intervals - the piano. Can't remember the answer about the Bb trumpet tuning, Eb and Bb saxophone tuning also. S'pose I should really, as I began playing music on the trumpet and still use it and a sax too. My heart and soul are with the Bass though. this line is intriguing -

oh yes, like this one. would like to hear from the major too. As for a question being silly, I may not speak for everyone, but to me, if it aids understanding, any question is a good one that 'C' in the middle of the piano is predictably called 'middle C'. the sharp / flat line of reasoning works for me. probably goes back to the question of learning about the rudiments of music from the least complicated beginnings, which might be; - start off learning where notes are positioned on the stave to the point that you can recognise them at a glance, or without stopping. no sharps. no flats. which puts you straight away in the key of c major - learn how the 'C' major scale is contructed on the piano keyboard i.e. all the white notes. then learn how the 'A' minor scale is constructed, again, all white notes. introduce the concept of sharps / flats. progress to constructing keys in other scales i.e. here's the black notes this may start off another session, but it is one possible answer of many, I'm sure look forward to hearing more -

Hi sharkfinger and thanks. Good 'ere innit I live on the Essex / London borders, so chances are we've gigged in each others back yards. I also have a touch of the Victor Meldrews on occasion ! (especially when I'm trying to get through London traffic - aaaarrrrggghhhhh!!!) -
Hi from another old timer. nice pics! If you give some outline of the technical problem i.e electrical, construction etc it may help others to give you the most helpful response. I'm sure you will get the right help one way or the other, as everyone seems to be friendly around here welcome !
i picked my bass up from the croydon workshop, had an overnight drive down from the north west, stayed at some god forsaken guest house and met up with bernie early doors.....realy glad i did it though.. 10 years on i still love the guitar..
I still love mine too. let me count the ways; - because it's perpetually still in tune when I take it out of the case - because I never think of it as too heavy - because it's always worth taking that moment to look at it for just a while longer after you've just cleaned it - because it's mine

if you listen carefully, can you hear 'Tracks of my tears' in there by Smokey Robinson ? sounds like James has just spent the whole afternoon listening to it ! So real though. nice one !

throwoff - interested in your rig. Do you mind if I ask you a few things ? Just noticed the equiliser - can you offer any insights into it's effects with the markbass setup please ? i.e. what it sounds like before /after the equiliser is used, your opinions on it's usefullness ? Did you arrive at this current setup by evolution, or was it a purposeful move to get a sound the markbass couldn't offer by itself ? just curious. really curious. thanks

sorry xverminate. tried to edit the last entry and crashed it. I was trying to add that I also had a Hohner Jack when they came out. Stunning pair of pickups when active, none too shabby passively either. Also nice and light. cheers -

oh, dead sexy
-
HI there. Like the sound of the proposed P bass. My old '72 was maple / maple as you intend. the scratchplate was white, which made it look dead sexy. have you considered body width for overall weight issues ? similarly, there is always the body wieght vs. neck weight thing to think about. a heavier neck may want to nosedive. Again, another one is the height of the board relative to the top of the body. Get it wrong here and there will be a need for some creative solutions on the height of the bridge i.e. need to gain or lose height outside of that available from the adjusters. I only mention these as it's a topic I've been considering myself for some time. I hope this helps save you tears at bedtime. Be interested to hear how you're getting on , thoughts etc good luck with that Tom
Welcome to the forum
Hi neepheid cheers for the heads up. stayed for a week in Bon Accord street in the eighties while working away from home. Saw Aliens 2 on release at the time ! Always think of Scotland fondly and get up amongst the hills whenever I can. Cool to hear from someone that lives up there rock on -
Just recently joined and love what you've done to the place, so HI to one and all. Just want to say thanks to everyone that has taken the time to post a review, give their thoughts on stuff and generally do things for the welfare of the bass community in general. Together, you have all created a pearl of great price. I've been playing bass since the 70's and never before come across a medium that allows bassists to respond to each other in 'real time'. At last, a place where I feel at home. hope to drop back in soon Cheers !
