Free DAWs

Ok, so up until now I've been using REAPER, but to be honest I don't use it enough to pay for it. So I'm looking for something free, that I can occasionally pop onto to record a song or two when I feel like it. My brother has bought a Mac and uses Garageband, and that looks great, but I don't have the money or the inclination at the moment to buy myself a Mac. I go off to Uni in September, maybe I'll get one then. But the point is if there's anything similar to Garageband, that'd be cool. But just suggestions for a free DAW that is similar to REAPER or Garageband or something would be appreciated! Thanks!
2. Ok, first post quickly updated because I'm in a bit of a rush. I'm going to make it 1.30pm until 6.00pm, because I can't guarentee I'll be there for 1.00pm, I have fencing 11.00-12.00, and whilst usually I'd skip it, I've got my coaching assessment the next day so I'd like to try and get that session in.
3. I don't know his name, but whoever plays bass for Plan B on the Defamation of Strickland banks is brilliant. She Said has some fantastic bass playing in it.
4. A lot of stuff by Muse is suprisingly easy. And Rage Against The Machine.
5.
Some nice stuff in your sig - will be cool to have an Alembic there!
A lefty one though!
6. I was going to say probably an active EQ would be a good idea? I expect it'll sound very thin without a decent bass boost. Obviously you can do that on your amp though. But I'd go for an active EQ if it were me.
7. Sounds cool! Will the 34 inch scale fit onto a tele body though? I seem to remember when I built my tele shaped bass it wouldn't fit so instead I used a tele template, a precision template, and a jazz template to put together a bigger tele shaped body. EDIT: d'oh! just seen you've answered this in your last post!
8.
Tait, Are we all paying on the door? Have we decided on a fair entrance fee (Anything over the required costs should go to charity in true BassBash style)… Shep
Yeah, you'll be paying on the door, but I'm not too sure on price yet, I was going to wait to see if there are any more people coming. £6 a head will cover it. The venue's £75, if we make any more than that I was thinking it could go to the same charities as the SE bass bash are giving to? I doubt it'll be much, but it's better than nothing.
9. Just bumping this up to see if there's anyone else that can come along. EDIT: actually, can one of the mods please sticky this?
10. Ok, details! It's in the smaller function room at The Five Ways, Edwards Lane, Nottingham, NG5 3HU. It's being held 20th November from 1pm-6pm. I can't really think of anything else to add, but I'm sure I've missed a lot. If anyone needs a lift from the city centre my Dad (Simon1964) is happy to do so, he'll be driving a people carrier, so there should be plenty of room.
11. Yeah, like my Dad said on his previous post, I've now booked this for November the 20th, at the Five Ways. I've also updated the list of members/gear that'll be there. Let me know if you can come and need adding to the list!
12. Looking very nice Umph! Can't wait to see this finished! What day are you on now?
13. Ok, gear list started too.
14. Looking really good! I did this course a while back, and it's well worth the money! Andy, to answer your question, when I did it, they were generally around the £1000 mark. I got quoted £950 for mine, then added another pickup and ended up paying £990. Depends on what you do though, mine was a simple ash body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard, although with a custom shape and 2 band EQ. If you're looking for fancy woods or whatever, it's going to cost more, if you're looking for a simple one pickup, passive, it's going to be less.

Ska Tone

To answer your question I'd say flats will help towards that sound. But then, I've only ever used flats on a fretless, so it could be the fretlessness that attributes to the tone.
16. Depends what type of band. For your run of the mill pub rock band, or something like that, then no. For something like classic music, then probably.
17.
Either date is fine for me. If it's at Five Ways I won't be able to bring as much stuff as it's further to walk...
Ok, I'll add you to the list
18. BUMP! There were 21 votes, surely more than 5 of these 21 people can come on that day?
19.
Defo can't do the 20th, as I am booked on a training course to become a dog trainer for the whole weekend
That's a shame! The reason I didn't want to do the 28th or 21st is because I'm training to become a fencing coach, so we're in the same boat mate! If we get many more people that can't do the 20th, I'll see about the 27th. It'll mean missing the South East Bash, but I can live with that.
20. Also another thing to think about is not just the bass getting damaged, but the hardcase getting damaged. It'll get loads of little chips and stuff on the side, especially if it's one of those sort of leathery ones.
21. Cool, sounds like a plan. Let me know if you can come on the 20th and I'll add you to the list.
22.
It's called a slab body - or at least it is on a Precision bass.
Are you sure? I'd always thought the term slab body meant that it didn't have tummy or wrist contours. The slab body precision still has a radius on it's edge, doesn't it? I'm probably wrong, or misunderstanding the question, but that's what I always thought slab body meant.
23. Good price, Foderas, too. Absolute bargain for the quality.
24. Ok, I went to the Five Ways. The function room looks good, for 60 people, but obviously not that many with basses and amps. Its smaller than the Grosvenor, but it should hopefully fit everyone. It needs £75 paying upfront, though. So if we did go for the Five Ways, I was thinking maybe £8 per person? Is that a little high? I just don't want to end up out of pocket for it. Depends how many people can come, obviously. Also, can only do 20th or 27th. I'd quite like to go to the South East bash, so preferably the 20th for me. And that looks good, it had (equally) the most votes. No stairs, and just across the hall from the bar, too. Let me know what you all think.
25.
It was me. The room is upstairs, and s I explained in my reply above, bass amps are heavy . I also recall that guy with the seven string smacking his head badly on the door jamb at the top of the stairs.
Ahh ok, I saw your post but hadn't realised it was you that voted poor. I'll bear that in mind, I think by the sounds of it the Five Ways is on the ground floor. Like I said earlier, I'm checking it out later, then I'm busy for the next couple of hours, but I'll post when I get home.
