the fender cowpokes had j-necks and a p-ish body
Was it just me that read that as something else?

I'm in the position where I don't think I can get any better sound than I have at present. My Genz Shuttle 6.0 and Schroeder 1212L sound fantastic, can go loud as hell and I can carry both of them and my bass in one trip. I would really like to try a Compact though but don't think that there's anyone around my way with one.

This was my bass and has a Jazz width neck http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=45594 as does this:

I've owned several 8 and 12 string basses. There are sites dedicated to both. They give a lot of useful information about what to look out for. They do tend to me more 5 string width than 4 string, especially the 12vers. You absolutely have to have a bridge with 8 saddles, otherwise intonation will be a mile out and these things sound hellish when one of the strings is out of tune. The bridge on those shine ones is bad as it only has the one saddle per group of strings but the kicker is that a lot of strings won't fit into the ferrules on the back as they are strung through the body. Some strings have large ball ends on both normal and octave strings and these won't sit in the ferrule. You have to find the ones that have a regular bass size ball end and a guitar sized one for the octave to allow them to fit correctly. I have thought about going the Warmoth route a couple of times. Their stuff is extremely well put together but you absolutely have to know that it is right for you, otherwise its worth about 2 bob when you sell it. Their 8 string necks are designed to fit regular Fender sized 4 string neck pockets

I always maintain that you can gig with any bass providing it isn't damaged in some way like a badly bowed neck or faulty electronics. In fact I would happily accept a dare for someone to give me the worst pile of garbage they could and I will do an entire gig with it. Before I got my gold Warmoth I did several gigs with one of these although not the same colour I would add: http://cgi.ebay.com/PINK-Metallic-Electric...3A1%7C294%3A200

Squier Modified TB Precision - relisted due to idiot
Delberthot replied to Delberthot's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Had to relist it as I made a mistake in an email about postage cost i but emailed the potential buyer straight back with the correct figure and added the details to the auction prior to any bids being made. He bid on it and won then queried the final total. Jason Lollar makes absolutely fantastic replacment pickups. What he doesn't know about them isn't worth knowing. http://www.lollarguitars.com/ Joe Walsh uses his stuff and a fair few other famous names. The other Warmoth that I had, which is still for sale by the guy I traded it with for another bass has one. They're wound like the originals. Sound absolutely huge. I'm still trying to get myself to get one for this but they're $80 which used to be £40 but since the exchange rate's gone t!ts for @r$e that's a lot more now. They are also wax potted and he does a 5 string version. There's a guy on the unofficial warmoth forum has a 5 string '51 style bass. I think I've just persuaded myself to get another one. I'll order it at the weekend. (i'll keep my quarter pounder for any possible future projects though). I'm in the process of selling a bundle of gear that i don't use so when i get the cash from that I'll fire my order in
-
Quarter pounder for me also but I will eventually get round to ordering a Lollar pickup for it.
fair enough! well it's good to know your warmoth is still the favourite dangerous game though! if you find something better than your warmoth, what will you do?
I'm just back from a gig tonight and the warmoth just keeps geting better.

Do you play right over the pickup or to the right of it? If you play far enough to the right you may get away with a pickup cover but you have to go the whole hog and get the bridge one as well.
-
I played 5, 6, 8 and 12 string bases for years and only went back to a 4 permanently a couple of years ago. I found the transition easy and when I had my Warmoth built I specified Jazz width. I hate jazz basses with a passion but love the necks on them.

I think you should hire me as an adviser. I could then fly to US at your expense and tell you if the Coppolo factory is in NY or California. Afterwards I could take the measurements of what you are looking for shape wise for a bass, number of strings and then go on a carribean cruise with the missus. When I return I will present you with your new bass which will be a no name jazz bass off ebay with a Fender logo applied crookedly for extra mojo By that time you'll have realised that the bass you desire so much, you already own - you're happy and I've got a tan. How does that sound?

Is it still available? I have an old zebra I could trade

New candidate for worst relic job ever
Delberthot replied to BottomEndian's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Couple of things - 'reliced' as a word is wrong If you're going to relic a bass at least try to find pictures of a bass that's had it done naturally over time Lastly, I like custard -
I've got an urge to get myself a fretless - Yes, I know I'm selling one but I fancy something more Fendery in style. I've come across some crazy crap http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Electric-Bass-Guitar...3A1%7C294%3A200 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1970s-Hohner-F-hole-...3A1%7C294%3A200 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Bass-Guitar-4-st...3A1%7C294%3A200 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bass-Fretless-Seven-...3A1%7C294%3A200 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-PRO-7-STRING-FRE...3A1%7C294%3A200 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-Saiter-Fretless-Me...3A2%7C294%3A200

Yes How about masking tape? Electical tape is too gunky after time if you ever want to take it off as is sellotape I do have to emphasise that you would really need to be a clumsy bugger to damage the pickup

So does anyone have any view on this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=360154562303

I like shiny and new. I don't particlularly want a 30+ year old battered bass with grubby tuners from years of sweat and fags that I feel I have to wash my hands after I play it. I would love a mid 50s Precision but I would immediately have to take the hardare off and clean it which would remove the mojo and snake oil etc. Do I really not want an old Fender or am I trying to talk myself out of getting one? You decide.

I've owned 2 '51 reissues and have built 2 Warmoth single coil P basses and I think that as long as you don't use the pickup as a thumb rest you're ok. They are more exposed but I certainly don't treat my bass any differently to one with a covered pickup. I've heard stories about the top coming off but I think that either comes from a faulty pickup or someone physically trying to wreck their bass. One night i was playing slightly more aggressive than normal and managed to get the E string stuck under the pickup and I don't have the pickup particularly close to the strings but it didn't damage anything. No point in putting a chrome cover over the top as some of the best tones can be had around the pickup. For most of my playing life I've played Stingrays so I naturally play with my right hand over where the Stingray pickup would normally be. Also gets in the way when you go from playing fingerstyle to slapping. These basses have one of the most unique slap tones. Absolutely love it.

I've found this but can't locate it on the KAM website http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=360154562303 My band used a regular KAM amp to drive the top cabs for years.
