1. I commissioned my Shuker P Bass when my mum surprisingly left me an unexpected bit of cash, so it is called "You Rosie" the phrase her mum used if my mum was in trouble. I don't ever find myself using the name, but then I don't find I need to refer to it at all - it's just there!
2. Great stuff! So, do you know which is the best bass for British metal/thrash/punk/crossover?
3.
but with that machine powering her along behind the curtains, she was never going to fail. Such is the music biz.
XL Recordings, part of Beggars Banquet, an incredibly long lived independent British label, hardly a fair description WoT!
4. As seen in post #3832 for a stunning version of a song I reckon hardly ever gets a live airing: http://basschat.co.u...10#entry2943067 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPiqwvbegq0
5. Yep, great performer, and terrible start to the year. Something to remember her by: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKAjcCW_jWQ
6. Congratulations Bleat & Alibabu, and sorry Alibabu for confusing you with some very English references on Soundcloud
7. Reminds me of the Harry Enfield Loadsamoney character - "had to buy a new car the other day - the old one was parked facing the wrong direction" (or same joke but "the ashtray was full")
8. Did one along those lines many years ago. The worst bit was the raffle, where they made sure there was a prize for everyone - went on for hours
9.
Incidentally, mentioned above was Tainted Love. The version we did, using real drums/bass, was patently a compromise and a case of ‘our own take’ – personally I hated it but it usually went down well.
I'd love to play this! 10. Having seen the OP, and before seeing the posts from EliasMooseblaster and alittlebitrobot, I went off to have a look at what was available and came across the awfully named Gimp and decided to give it a go. Now my software skills are pretty basic, but with the help of a couple of youtube guides I managed to create a fairly basic poster that was infinitely better than past attempts on MS Word. I'd highly recommend it.
11.
Talking of rocking it up, a band I was in 25 years ago (how time flies!) used to do a "We are Family" in the style of the Chilli Peppers crossed with the Dead Kennedys... It was the only cover we did though!
Different from what I had in mind - I think those re-workings can be great, and a lot of fun. It is more the idea from some players that playing louder, faster and more notes livens up a song, whereas often it will have the opposite effect.
12.
Wunjos had one to try last time I was there about a week ago
Interesting, they had one a couple of years back and were suggesting they were open to offers. Might be worth a call @Maude
13.
Badly played and over played songs are the danger for cover bands, but IMO a good song doesn't need much production. Like Buddy Holly songs, a good song can be stripped down to the bare bones and it'll still work. You've got to be Mr Pastry (google if you don't know him!) to make a mess of them. The other proviso is that simple songs have to be played well. You can't cut any corners or fudge anything or else they just won't work.
The other massive crime in my book is bands that use tempo and volume to "rock it up" - songs like Buddy Holly's, Little Richard's and specifically, Elvis' That's Alright Mama tend to fail when bands beef them up too much.
14.
If you're serious about a cover band then no song should be "off limits" unless it gets no reaction or worse still a negative reaction from an audience or your band can't do it justice. The bottom line is that you're there to satisfy the audience first. As there are thousands of hit songs from the last 60 years there should be a lot of numbers where the audience and you can agree. I don't like playing Tainted Love but it's a very popular number and a floor filler and sing along for every audience we've played it to. Cover bands shouldn't ignore a reaction like that.
Chris I agree with you entirely, except for the above mentioned, and probably for one of the reasons you have included - I just don't think Summer of 69 sounds right without the production effects on the original, making live covers of what is already a pretty dull song sound completely and utterly turgid!
15. Summer of 69 is probably my only absolute no.
16. Excellent job. Must use the inspiration to finish my restoration project.
17. Well as many people have now voted as have contributed - Funny old game!
18. Thanks Gents for the nice posts above - thought it had gone via Facebook, but that's all gone quiet, so still available.
19. Got to disagree with RhysP on LTD - I used to stock them when I had a music shop and rated them highly - did have one problem guitar, but that was sorted by the distributor. There is always that little bit of extra magic with the real deal ESP, but a 600 series LTD will be a very fine guitar.
20. Get my blues band, which is now settled in nicely, gigging 2/3 times a month, and to see if we can start cracking some better gigs - local festivals, beer festivals etc. instead of just pub gigs. Other target is purely reliant on finances, but is to get a DB and start playing that.
21. Hi Tony, I ran a small music shop for a couple of years and one of my pet hates was the sound of electro acoustic guitars plugged in In particular, I felt that a couple of the big brand name acoustic guitar amps were awful - the sound just never worked for me. One day while a customer was trying one out and I didn't have any acoustic amps in stock I plugged the guitar into a bass amp. To my ears it sounded way better, far more natural than any of the cheaper acoustic amps. OK, it may have struggled next to an AER, but compared to Marshall, Fender and Ashdown it sounded so much more natural and acoustic. Give it a go - hopefully you'll enjoy the results as much as I did!
22.
His normal bassist, Gail Ann Dorsey is playing rhythm on that track. I presume she doesn't slap, bit like me really....although I have more hair!
You're right, quick check of Heroes from the same gig and she is back on bass.
23. Love it - thanks for posting.
24.
Don't quite see what's funny about it. That was the Carvin B2000 monoblock. A good amp, but circumstances change and I've owned and used (and reviewed) quite a few amps since then. I wouldn't much fancy hauling that Carvin around in a rack case now to be honest - and it wouldn't suit my current needs. Just because I find one amp that I like several years ago doesn't mean I'm not going to try others and change if I think it necessary. And where else would I post my findings if not in the Amps and Cabs section of a bass guitar forum?
Sorry, didn't mean to get your back up, just speaking figuratively. Was just making conversation, based on remembering that you and I were both staunch supporters of the Carvin brand back then.
25. Funny that a while back you were extolling the virtues of Carvin, and this was the amp I A/B'ed with the Carvin BX500, choosing the latter. Still very happy with my choice three years later!
