If you liken playing the bass (or music generally) as a speaking a language then: Brain fart ensues:- - there are some who learn a language by spending time in another country and they pick up the lingo by listening and spending time with the locals and can mimic, they often absorb the "emotion" of the language too, but often they can't explain the theory or the grammar behind the language. But they speak, and are understood and listen and understand. However, this can be a little restrictive in that their vocabulary can be narrow and the accent they've adopted may not be "transferable" in another part of the country, let alone another country. - there are those who study a language, are taught by tutors who explain and break down the grammar, they are taught and understand structure (often the roots (greek perhaps) of a language enable the student to have a broader grasp of other foreign languages). These students may never visit the country, and may never absorb the emotion of the language, but they too can speak and be understood and listen and understand. For me, the best is both. Study to broaden your vocabulary and understanding, but go listen to the locals talk. Study, listen and PLAY. Sorry about that, probably all clap trap,..........please ignore. John

I advertise as a bass tutor, but I still get inquiries for guitar lessons. I would say that, including the schools I teach in and private students, only 25% are bass students. I have picked up a few bass students from lazy (guitar) teachers who have either gone down the "riff" road, or have insisted on sticking to their own preferred genre, or in one case used the student's playing to noodle to, in an attempt to impress. One thing I do say to a new bass student is, if they take their instrument seriously, there's work out there. But I agree, there are hundreds of wannabe guitarists who think that Guitar Hero is an instructional video. One lad brought his DS with GH to a lesson as he wanted my "help" to get it to the next level, so I put it on the top shelf. Suffice to say he didn't bring it again. I guess the bass player on the whole has been seen as the one "at the back", the "steady" one, and who wants to be a "steady Eddie" when you can be a retard geetard in a leotard?

When I play on stage, I always like to make a bit of an effort on the old clothes front (probably a throw back to the 70's when the bands tried to look better than the audience), nothing spangley, or lycra at my age, but dress up a bit, You know, black shirts/troos/pointy shoes/, or black suit with something red underneath,,,,blah, blah Anyway Friday night's gig with Hollywood Killers, I get my clobber on and realise it's all from Charity Shops, I was a complete walking advert for "Man at Oxfam". So wondered, does anyone else get their slightly quirky stage clothes from cast off's from the fat/rich/dead? Or am I the only saddo who does this? Or wouldn't you dare be seen in anything from a "Charidy" shop mate?

I know what you mean. I recently got rid of all my basses, apart from my Jazz bass. It does all I want.................until............... All was going well until I saw a G&L SB-2 on here this week and bought it. Now I'll be gigging that tonight coz I love the huge voice of the Pups on this. So....will I end up just using that??? It's an ongoing thing with me, and if you'd sell me your L2500, maybe I'd never use the Jazz or the SB-2 again, coz for me the L2500 are such good all rounders. Man I feel for you, I hate these decisions.
