As others have said you need to be tight with the drummer and then tone wise tailor your sound to fill the frequencies that the other instruments don't. Start by re-eq'ing to bring out the frequencies below the guitar and vocals, and then look at fattening up with valve compression/distortion - you'll need more in a band context then you think from playing on your own. If you're serious about the bright then you'll need to seriously look at multi-course basses (8 or 12 string) and/or bi-amping.
Thanks! I'm borrowing an octave up for practise to see how that works today
 2.
What kinda bass do you play? I currently have two basses. The warwick streamer is amazing but I doubt it is ever going to nail a 'huge' sound, the notes have a lot of attack and the tone, while being amazing cuts through but doesn't fill the space. My JV Pbass however does, it has the middy P bass thump, a load of low end, the brightness from the maple neck and most importantly a massive full tone (lots of harmonics) a bit like a really big piano. So find a really nice P bass.
I'm currently playing an Yamaha Attitude, which is like A P-bass after a work out! and i get fat lows which i can change tone wise pretty radically with the neck pickup and the P-pickup gets nice punchy tone, Billy Sheehan can get a Huge tone, live its practically punched me in he face! I'm using a different set up, and i'm not trying to copy his tone, but i know it is do able, Maybe it is to do with the tone i have? Which is based around being bright,
 3.
Forget amps, effects, basses and all other stuff. What will make you, and, more important, your band sound full and huge, is learning how to work with others. It's not only you, that make you sound full and huge. It's also other members of the band. Most important, the drummer. The hugeness comes from tightness. You wouldn't believe, how a good drummer enhances bassist. And vice versa. once again, forget about gear, concentrate on process.
yup absolutely, i think i will listen to bassists who specialise in such things, Sheehan, Myung, Harris, Squier as i said i will report back tomorrow
 4.
Not sure that is so useful for filling out for a missing guitarist, more for carving a space under an already dense mix. Plus 25hz is mostly speaker upset and not much sound. Edit: Also, get your own diads in, play busier lines, and add extra notes to any note you play a bunch of times, there's usually an octave of 5th you can reach.
Hmmmm good plan, i will report back after band practise tomorrow, a small issue is, i have always played Diads and odd chords here and there, and fairly busy lines, but that was before, with more space i'm sure i can modify and change! Thanks so much guys!
 5. alot of this sounds expensive haha! I will certainly explore all these options when i have money but first i need all my pennies to buy a new Trombone (boo for money not going to bass stuff)
 6.
This Should be so bad from the separate pickups, as the bridge one isn't making the real low end. I had a split signal going to a pair of 8x10s either side of the drummer and it was really noticeable.
I'm not 100% sure i follow but i will re-read the page in depth tomorrow, thanks!
 7.
Dual amped rig, one beefy and bassy, one toppy. Cut the bass from the toppy one to avoid the comb filtering.
I have that set up with my Attitude, The woofer being the Bass, and the P-pickup being the bright top end, and not to seem a fool but "comb filtering"? Edit: Spelling
 8.
Hamer 12 string bass. That's all you need.
I was thinking of using an octaver, i get a large (but i want monstrous!) sound using my attitude, and i love the tone but i think i will invest in a good octave up!
 9. Hey guys, Not sure where this would go so i plugged it there, My sound is sized lets say, and i want it bigger, (ideally i'd cover every frequency in the human hearing spectrum haha) My band has down sized, from 5 to 3, and in the studio things are better than ever sound wise, my lines sticking out, filling gaps etc a bit more as now they can! But is it possible to enlarge your sound? I have a bright (and i'm looking for an even brighter) clean sound, and my "normal" distorted sound is alright, but the sound doesn't quite sound big enough, I'm sticking this right here as several people have asked this so, I play a Yamaha Attitude! The band is a guitarist who is a rhythm and lead in one but likes his dyads and single notes, and a loud hard hitting drummer, but he doesn't play as much as he could/should but it still works, So a smaller than usual sound from the drummer, and "messy" (all over the place but workin') guitar going on I want my sound to be like the really fat guy taking up the whole lift haha, (an analogy i've used for a while after the experience) pushing against the drums and guitar but not over powering them, i've tried just turning up the volume and it didn't work as well as hoped but it has gotten me closer, so erm yeah, Ideas/tips on what to try? Adam, N:B The idea for this came after listening to iron maiden, I want my bass sound to be like John Petrucci's guitar sound that big! (i know he double tracks, and live uses a modded delay pedal set to like 0.1 seconds or something crazy like that) Also i realise sound clips would help you guys but i have no way of getting you any
 10. You guys are confusing me with your more than one string, and "neck" malarkey! found this on youtube for those of you who haven't seen it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0ydPW7vgTw
 11.
Since you've tried, listened to the two of them: How would you compare the SVT 4 and 5? Just talking about the sound not the specs, combinations, wattage, etc... Is the drive channel any good on the 5? Or you'd be better off with the 4 and a pedal to add the overdrive?
The drive on the pro 5 is the same as on the BSP, and its bloody f***ing Amazing!
 12. Note: I play with Distortion about 90% of the time, and for my Clean tone, i like it to be very bright, sort of Entwistle-esque i guess, The LoMenzo i like to use in a band as the low end is still intact so the sound doesn't open up with gaps, but your over driven part of your tone can really shine, at least in my experience, and its very versatile, and solid!
 13.
GK Diesel Dawg or MXR M-80 is the best from what i've heard.
Your a tad Biased Chris! Being a Duff Fan (like me!) If you could get one, the Diesel Dawg is fantastic, i like the M-80, and i really want one, but either they stopped making it, or that stopped making the one that Duff uses, +1 for the Ashdown James LoMenzo, and the Ashdown Distortion plus is pretty good too! now the Distortion in the Ampeg SVP BSP... (before someone leaves a comment along the lines: What about it?) It is sublime, but unfortunately i don't use my BSP much, its very sentimental and i can't put it in the effects loop of my MAG300 head... as i am too afraid too pretty much! haha plus i can't afford the extra cable
 14. Tortex .88 everytime, i find it useable for everything 4&5-7 strings maybe if you wanted to use a 5 more slightly heavier,
 15. I've had to pay to play gigs, at local pubs etc with a big scene, and (like em or not still a fact) the band Korn spend something like $150 to play their first 10 gigs, just the way some people do it i guess, doesn't mean its not fair though! 'cause its not haha
 16.
Sold, signed , sealed, delivered. Is there a way I can delete this ad now?
Just change the title to SOLD and it will be ignored.
 17.
Aw c'mon boys! A good amp like this for a silly price - there must be a home out there for it somewhere.
Really wish i could! love Laney amps don't know why they get bad press, bump on me!
 18. I am currently using My bass into a TU-2 and then An Ashdown James Lomenzo (bought from Dannybouy great chap!) i occasionally borrow my brotehrs Ibanez DS7 for some really fuzzy and sharp Cliff burton like sounds, I'm looking to try our an MXR Distortion Plus, and i want to invest in a compressed to help tighten things up, but that is very low on the list, I find Playing with distortion improves your playing as our flaws and faults are amplified and shine through, just my opinion though, i mean its not like playing with distortion stops you hitting wrong notes, Huh, thinking about its basically distortion and thats what i use like 95% of the time
 19. I had the HONOUR! of going to a shop in Berlin which sold exclusively Esh basses I played a beautiful just sublime Blue Poseidon and a Sovereign in lava sort of pattern very very nice, shame about the EMGs as i have a dis taste for them, but the Piezo really hits home! Been some of my favourite basses for years, never had the money to buy one at least money and courage! I e-mailed them before they shut down (they closed then re-opened) asking about models and asked general things, (good thing my german is good! may have scored me extra points haha)

 21.
It's an ashdown! (power stage fried itself, common problem) As for GAS.... I'd quite like a fretless of some description and pair of ABM 410 and 115 cabs to replace my MAG cabs That's about it really, i'm relatively GAS free right now. I'll have to take some photos of my rig soon though once my project bass is sorted, it's getting nearer to completion.
Ahhhhh GAS free, whats that like? haha, i'm an a voyage of distortion right now, just messing with my Ashdown James LoMenzo distortion, its decent but still what i'm after, but closer yaaaaay, haha
 22. Anyone on here got a Status B2? i'd LOVE to see one, sooooo jealous of all of you I'm happy with my Yamaha though, for now... haha
 23. I was in a cash converters like shop in England (can't remember where though!) and this guy was handing in an Ibanez Universe 777 Steve vai guitar and he got like £400 for it and it was brand new so i ask him the guy at the desk why? And he told me that the guitar was for his dad who ordered it but then died of a heart attack, and no one would buy a dead mans guitar for fear of it being haunted? even though it had never been played. I'm not making this stuff up, i found that truly bizarre, Though once i saw a clapton guitar in an Oxfam shop for £200 in great condition,
 24.
Well, they're probably still there, knowing them
I was playing the exact one a few days ago, i really like the neck, very quick and to me slim! I really like wide necks and fairly deep necks, Millars are stupidly priced =/ espically the ampeg stuff if you want it through them, On another sour price note, anyone seen the price of the Ashdown ABM300 in R&B?
 25.
Wouldn't we all? I my ABM is make in the UK as well, and so is my electric blue head, funnily enough the electric blue blew up
Haha, for anything less than "giggable" ie practise i use laney, i quite like them oddly... i designed an Amp (i know nowt about amps so it was an idea) and sent to Laney, no reply ='( haha, How come the Electric blue Blew up? So what is on Everyones GAS LIST?, mine keeps growing it i will soon need GAS removal surgery, the only problem is the side effect of empty-wallet-itis mine currently stands at, in vague order of likeliness of getting one/importance to me MXR Distortion + pedal, Ashdown ABM 300 of some form (there is one on here for £200 but that is £200 more than i can spend! i am so gutted) then a Cab to match probably a Mag 410, a new BASS, preferably a 6 string, looking for a Yamaha RBXJM2, and there are a tonne of pedals i wish to buy to faf with [-------- INSERT MOST THINGS BASS RELATED I HAVE EVER SEEN--------] A Musicman Bongo, probably a 6, \ a Status Graphite B2, |------ some point in the future! Another Yamaha Attitude, / Can't wait till i'm allowed to work properly, xD
