1. Make sure you remember to treat the Nut of your bass too! Wore mine down quick usuing it in every second song! AWESOME pieces of kit, dunno why they are less popular on guitar!
2. Shuker! He makes P basses for Simon Nix and JJ Burnel
3. There are a few threads here on them, do a search Was thinking bout getting a 7... They don't seem bad if you get a good one, and if you argue enough can get replacements till you get a good is one what i remember people saying?
4.
I've got a quote from Shuker for a fairly basic PJ bass, I also costed up a Warmoth that was similar (spec wise). The Warmoth was around 1/2 the cost, "great!" I thought, but that was before vat/duties/shipping. Add all that in and the difference drops to a couple of hundred quid. I know where I'd spend the money.
Anything with 6 strings + seems to run over £1K ever where i've poked my head round, apart from ACG but i've never played, or had experience with one and the body shapes aren't totally to my liking though i'm not discounting UK based luthiers! I'd prefer to spend my money here! Just the Gecko seems a great deal, i like the look and the options so thats what is at the top of the list At the mo!
5.
Fair enough, but you (presumably) wouldn't want to use budget fittings and even using fairly decent, run of the mill stuff you could easily get near the £1500 mark with bridge, tuners, pickups, electronics, and all the little things like neck plate, screws, strap buttons. I'm all for building just the bass you want, I'm just saying it's surprising how the costs mount up - approach with caution, unless you're a millionaire...
My lack of money is how i started look at warmoth haha! I'll keep looking around man! Your a Spanner -> The works! haha
6. I really want this now =| haha seeing ERB has made me want it MORE haha! Any trades? No? =/ Then i'd need to organise getting it here, haha Best o' luck with the sale
7.
Bear in mind you'll have to add vat to your costs too (to the cost of both the parts and the shipping), as well as finishing, hardware, pickups, electronics, strings and setup if you need it. Warmoth parts are very nicely made - generally better than the far Eastern fleabay stuff, with the big advantage of being able to customise your parts, but my advice would be to add it all up, look on the HM Customs website to get a better idea of import costs and take a look at what the total cost of the final finished bass will be. Then you can compare it to what you could get off the rack at a shop, or even from a luthier - maybe the difference won't be as big as you think. Sorry to p#ss on the fireworks
After two e-mails with Warmoth what i'd want (Gecko 6 with some things like paint ) and searching the HM sites, (I couldn't find exact figures but its roughly) at total charge of 40% Maximum as far as i can tell which is apprx. £850 or there abouts if my mental maths is right, Which for a Swampash/Basswood body 6 string isn't too bad. It was just an idea for a second 6 which would be nice, If i went to a luthier i'd need £2000 so i could go a bit crazy haha! And unfortunately the only basswood 6s i know of the the Musicman Bongo (£1500+) and all these budget american first six strings =/
8. Try playing in my 'prog' metal band! (I call it wierdness instrumental noisey metal and its 'my' band haha!) last gig we played opening for a biggher band we played a 40 minute set, which was 3 songs I find repetition of playing and really knowing how the part fits with the other instruments helps.
9. All three of my basses (My first, squire P. Needs a little repair work and has done since it was bought new!, Yamaha Attitude and Ibanez BTB 676) were bought unseen. Living in the hills where i do the selection of instruments is very very limited and i've been mostly lucky as has my brother!
10.
Yep! Heard him in an interview declare it as rose blue and couldn't understand why people would think it is pink!! All said with a straight face.... andy
Haha! Its called rose blue because of the undertone, of light metallic blue. Yamaha Paint jobs are fabulous. The LTD II (R.I.P) Lava red has a stunning gold undertone of paint simply gorgeous!
11.
I built a Warmoth tele thinline. Nicest guitar I own. The build quality is unquestionable, as nice as I've seen on anything. As a Fender man my ultimate dream bass is a Warmoth Jazz rather than a Fender custom shop or vintage one. That's how highly I rate them.
Wow thats praise! Whats the proccess like?
12.
Good luck if you decide to go for it. Planning and sorting everything before hand is half the fun (well, for sad bastards like me!)
Haha same! Spent hours of fun (been of sick since friday! back tomorrow ) exploring options! Thanks guys!
13.
In the vid Billy says the Fender P is the greatest bass ever made. So no point buying his Yamaha then?
He also said he changed everything minus the body wood and some wires haha!
14.
Musicman Basses
Spanner -> Works
15.
That's the main reason I'd never even consider one - it's SO specific that you'd need to be in a tribute band (or be the ultimate fanboy) to play one. Much as I admire Billy, I don't want to play just like him (I hate the mudbucker, anyway) or sound like him (although a smidge of his talent would be good to take elsewhere) or even look like him. I have an 80s BB, and back in the day was pleased to see he played one (pre-Attitude), but I never took a drill, sander, soldering iron (or, Gawd help us, a tin of metallic pink paint) to mine to make it EXACTLY like his. I'm sure it's a great instrument, and having played one of the new £2.5k BB2024s, I can say they're as good as anything in the £2k market quality-wise, but it's far too specific for me.
I feel a little insulted, i own an Attitude and it was my main rock bass (and still is my main 4 string). I'm a fan of Mr Big and have been since i was about 7 (not that long ago, only 8/9 years) but i don't play in a tribute band, or spend all my time playing covers in my bed room. It has a solid 'grindy' growl-ish tone which i absolutely love. I'm not a fan of the mud bucker, i tend to combo both P'ups as the combined sound is a different thing to the sound of the pickups run side by side, I'm not a HUGE fanboy, though i'm a big fan of his music. (I will say i have a feeeeeeeew fan boyish traits, and i get togetehr with a steve vai tribute act on occasion, but he is my favourite guitarist) Oh and its not entirely mettalic pink... Its called Rose Blue Though he is THE most imitated bassist i can think of, i mean there are people on teh web who dress like him, got his tatoos, run the exact same rig have all his basses and only play billy sheehan music/mr big/talas covers all their life. I saw "Raw Like Sushi" (Mr Big cover band) and the guys had no orginal music to speak of despite having been together for years! Now THATS fan boyisms (I know fanboyisms well, my brother wishes he was matt bellamay pretty much! haha!) AC
16. It worksout under £2000 if you buy one straight from yamaha Japan and have it shipped over, shipping from Japan to UK isn't as much as i would have expected. BIT of an overkill price wise =| and R.I.P SEAFOAM GREEN AND LAVA RED </3 haha!
17. Not sure how you all only just found out about this! Its a huge thing in japan, they find it funny and its a fad its kinda confusing though haha!
18. Hey all I've been looking around the Warmoth Website and i'm rather liking the idea of a Gecko 6 So anyone gone down the route of getting one? Pretty much custom instrument, adding say 25% for import tax and shipping and it all still comes to a good price, roughly £650 So say what you can Cheers in advance
19. Watched Being Human Aye? Haha! Try a P-bass and a tubey Ashdown style amp with most things turned to 11. Sounds JJ's style right? AC.
20. YAMAHA ATTITUDE GAS. Don't think i can justify having two. wish i had something to trade =|
21. I see the The Xtender as a tool not as a substitute for lower strings but thats just me! I would always be a B-G guy because i use the lower notes alot (Though i play a 6 so i have both ) If you want the most flexibility go for the E-C + xtender, Just think about what you would use each for etc You could always get the new double xtender and have the E-C then drop to D THEN B haha, though i don't know if they are out yet or if anyone here has tried one Hope that helps?
22. Great basses for the price! Bump on me
23.
LMAO that has to be quote of the day. I can't really justify letting it go for any less though, would be an awesome ironing board though
Haha! Well if this does go any lower i'll be after ya! Pffft! MY ironing board has 23 strings and 17 Badass 3s
24. If this goes even stupidly lower i'll buy it just so i can convince my guitard brother its an ironing board (He never does any house work...) Bumpo on me!
25.
I've had a GTBD-7 which I struggle to remember how much I paid for, but it was around 600 quid second hand I think? Something like that. Maybe not quite down to entry level price, but the regular GT-7 is every bit as good, and cheaper still. I've also had a second hand US Conklin 7 Sidewinder, which cost me around 800 pounds I seem to remember. For what you get, those prices aren't unreasonable to me. The GT-7 is still THE 7 string to learn on IMO, and there are plenty floating around in the UK second hand. They seem to hold value fairly well too if you buy second hand. As for the Galvestons, I find them to be unacceptably heavy (I'm normally quite forgiving with the weight of a bass - I'm pretty much happy up to about a stone). They're also large in the neck department. Some people might prefer the spacing of a generous 4 string on the neck of a 7, but it becomes much more difficult and tiring to play IME. They also have suffered from poor finishing when I've played them - the fretwork isn't astounding etc. I've heard fairly decent stuff about the Antonio Tsai basses you can pick up off eBay, but not had enough experience to offer a useful opinion to be honest.
Thanks for the heads up man! BTGAndys GTBD-7 sold for Approx. £850 and Manudepaz's GTBD-7 in spain is selling for £950 incl shipping. Both are natural though :/ haha Only issue i have with the GT-7 is that its active, where as the GTBD is has passive pickups (and an active pre-amp) and is neck through which are two of my favourite things for me
