2. Not sure how accurately this shows the tone? I excited for when Dood finally gets a moment too breath and wastes it making a LH video we have surprisingly similar tastes!
3. Slap a 6 string? depends on spacing etc, its not too bad on my 17mm string spaced ibanez how about this!
4.
Just a quick reply - well - in the case of the LH preamps, due to the 'Fender Tone Stack' passive EQ - the 'flat' setting (as near to bypass that you are likely to get) is around Bass=2 Mid=10 Treble=2. Therefore from a flat setting you can up the bass and treble drastically from the 2 point. You can also pull the mids right back from 10 to scoop them out deeply. All three controls are interactive so it's possible to get a huge range of 'curves' from just three controls. The flat setting will be kinda similar for any preamp using the same tone stack design, such as the Alembic F1-X, The BSP clean channel and the Trace Elliot V-Type.
Ah! Ok thanks alot Dood!
5.
Yeah, if you push the pre hard enough it will distort, but I think the original design was meant to be clean with tons of head room which is what I prefer the head to do. I like that I can push it hard enough and the natural valve compression handles my active basses nicely, but I don't make it bark. I'd prefer to do the 'dirt' elsewhere in the signal chain so that I know that I can always arrive back at a beautiful clean tone. The LH1000 nails that - and that's not just being biased - i think the simplicity of the head and lack of opamp junk makes it a brilliant sound. Ok, the BSP - sit down mate, you're in for a shock! Yes there is a valve in the preamp that feeds the clean channel. The signal is then fed to the distortion channel afterward. The tube circuit it self isn't design to drive, much like the LH.. infact - it's pretty much the same schematic for both the LH preamp and BSP clean section. The dirty channel is a familiar distortion pedal design with a bit of shaping to stop it sounding fizzy. Although, as you know - it can do if you want it to! I have ran the two clean preamps in parallel for an AB session - I am pretty sure that the differences are down to the totally different valves types in each and a few component value changes. They both sound great though - the LH does pip the BSP at the post for detail and clarity. YUM!! Yes, I have to say that the distortion channel is pretty amazing on the BSP - I'm interested to get my hands on the Hartke Kilo - as I want to know what the distortion channel on that is like!!
Still in shock haha, well how ever it works its awesome! Same, man and i want to see Billy Testing out the Kilo distortion too! You and Now Mr Sheehan have me in a Hartke shaped twist, that plus my love of GK and neo speakers = GAS haha! I think thats what i like about the BSP, as i reaaaalllly dislike that "Fizz" (good way of describing it!) and i've never found a distortion which is same/sounds similar (Though i'm still a newbie and a young 'un so if you know of something that'll do the job give us a shout!) and i've never been a fan of the BSP clean tone, its good but from what i've heard of the LH heads i'd agree with you! Back onto the clean tone thing... (I don't run my sound 100% that often) how intense is the mid scoop of the LH? I've read over on american sites and 'that' forum, that you need to but the mid control to 10 to get a mild scoop and other wild things and many conflicting peices of information so please clarify for me And do you (guys) run it smooth and clean or does it snarl? Both a great! I think the Hartke LH500 head, with the Gallien Krueger Neo 212 cab would be a decent medium/light weight rig with VOLUME just add some distortion and i think i'll be a happy chap!
6. I wouldn't say its the cab I borrowed a Geddy Lee for a week and did a gig with it and had the same issue, dropping the treble and cranking (for me!) the Mids helped alot, The GL jazz bass sounds a bit thin too me, if i owned one i'd change the Pups, Fab neck though!
7. Mansons are crazy, Seen a few thing a few £100 more than it should be but just as many the same amount less! Gorgeous colour
8. First Bass - Squier Vinatge Modified Precision Go To Bass - Ibanez BTB676 Your Bass - Yamaha Attitude LTD II (does it really count as my tone then? haha i don't sound too much like Billy Sheehan or have the mad chops, but i adore the tone and it certainly helped me define what i'll have in my next bass!)
9. No way i could afford it but any sound clips?! Best of luck with the sale Great price and Gareth is a top class man!
10.
Really? I find that amazing. Personally, I think it's all bollocks and the nut should be made of a material similar to the frets. Brass is probably best. I find it hard to understand why most basses don't have zero frets. it makes perfect sense, Patrice Vigier has the right idea. He also believes through necks are a bit stupid. He's right I think.
Through neck as in neck through body or? I'd say Graphite or brass (something slick and tough for me so i can use my de-tune) probably brass, looks good and is solid!
11.
Im glad you mentioned 'Aint nobody' ive tried to it learn on a 4 and it just aint working!! Hence the search for a decent 5 string for the new function band! A lot of the songs ive been asked to learn go lower than a 4, if i want the job i need the right tools, can anyone recommend good 5's below £1000???
Yamaha Or Ibanez, both have everything from £300 too £1000 and both will be well made sound great and have a slick easy too play neck, great if you play a 4 normally and only use the 5 on the odd occasion!
12.
No comment on whether its better (my CV P is basswood but "better" would be down to personal tastes IMO) but i have always assumed its cheaper. My CVP is light but my CV Jazz (also basswood) weighed the same as my HW-one Jazz which was Alder.
True i guess! The musicman Bongo is made of Basswood as is the Universe Ibanzez guitar, both expenisve awesome instruments, i guess its down to taste! Though as a soft wood its gram for gram just a tiny but lighter than alder, I think the CVs use heavier older school components but i guess i'm not totally sure! Agathis is a cheap wood as is Basswood, but personally i feel Basswood is more usuable as Agathis is wierd and has certain "pockets" of frequencies severly cut and some boosted if you know what i mean? What as most common woods are even sounding but have character, liek Alder being punchy and Ash having a sort of scooped sound
13. Basswood is a better wood (even from lesser cuts I think...) Than Agathis as it has a clearer tone and more even sound no? Plus its light great wood if you ask me!
14. I always wondered, can you push the valve in this into distorting? (Or because of the way the pre-amp designed that can't happen or?) As the SVP BSP I (and now Dood as well!) Have, has a Valve for the Overdrive channel and thats one of THE best overdrives i've ever heard I'm planning on getting a GK neo cab and might get a LH500 to go with I know they are designed to stay clean but at (crazy deafening from what i hear!) high volumes does it break up? Anyone got any sound clips? Not much on the net
15.
i fancy somthing to keep me busy in the summer, so im thinking about making my own bass cab to match the head im going to buy. (Hartke HA3500 or Mag 300) Celestion speakers seem to be the ones to go for and the cab will be made out of plywood. How do you guys think it will compare to the real thing?
I'd say Hartke but depends what your after, And Celestions are a good choice!
16. Do it, then i can borrowed it too strut around the 'deen!
17. I played a Mahogany 9 string which weighed like 17lbs or something like, and a Mahogany double neck Les paul guitar and bass which weighed almost 20lbs i'd say! Both owned by the same guy he is 6' 7" and about 17st I'm 5' 11.5" and 13st so erm yeah i wasn't noodleing for very long!
18.
The prices of Warmoth stuff varies massively depending on what you want - if you're prepared to finish a body and neck yourself for instance you could save a couple of hundred quid when you take into account what they charge, special finishes and the dreaded VAT/Import Duty. Stuff like bound fingerboards and block inlays add allot to the price as do fancy facings on bodies. They have a pretty good 'neck & body builder' section so you will know exactly what the basic price will be for what you want, then add on shipping and duty etc (about 40 percent according to someone on the forum). One thing is certain though, they're NOT a cheap option but they are very nicely made and you can have pretty much anything you want.
http://www.dutycalculator.com/ ^(found By 7string) Should calculate it for you! Depends on the price of shipping your getting through warmoth however!
19.
my question is, since i have always had a passion for punchy, growling bass sounds, a good example is "We Care A Lot' by Faith No More, i was wondering if i could still get that punch out of passive pickups to any level? if not, how close? being that i am using it for recording so i have a lot of adjustments i can make on the desk. another question would be, if i do get actives will they give the bass the quality it lacks from low quality build?
My bass tone is 99% growl 1% everything else, and it only works with passives for me!
20. Don't know why people don't like the shape! Personally one of my favourite looking basses, and i've always had GAS for a Warwick Vampyre 5, not played one but heard one, and the tones are quite punchy in the low mids, classic warwick sound
21. Anyone else find the MIM range too expensive? I mean £500+ for A MIM Precision?! Anyone else remember when they were £350? I'd say the squire personally!
22.
I have a MB210 I use for rehearsals and think its great. Very small, lightweight and very loud. Quite bassy sounding too. If you're in the area you're more than welcome to come along and try it out.
How does it handle the Low B? I'm considering the MB210/MB115 as i don't think i can strech to the MB212 / a Neo 212 cab + RB head
23.
Seems to be that way for certain brands, especially guitars IMO. I will stick my neck out and say that Gibson are top offenders in this. The mid-life crisis market is a very lucrative one, especially for aspirational items such as motorbikes, sport cars, and musical instruments (rock and roll ones, can't see anyone splash out on a top of the range flame maple veneered bassoon to cure their crisis). People are cashing in on that!
A top of the range flame maple veneered bassoon will run you £22 000 or there abouts! Now don't get me started on the contra... hahah Totally agree with you on this one, maybe its because all Gibson Endorsees are balding? or have so much gunk in their hair its all going to fall of in a heap? Haha just joshing to you gibo players!
24. I have a thing for Yamaha so they get my vote A friend owns a 170 and a 270 both great basses for the money i think! AND The yamahas own nickle factory strings are actually quite good (in my opinion!) so they don't sound awful when you plug in for the first time!
25. Why do Attitudes always go so low on here?/Thrown in as a P bass class and in that sorta price range? Always upsets me to see an Attitude going for £500/£600 i bough mine for £1650!! BTW That is THE Nicest looking stingray 5 i've ever seen! Best of luck with the look for a new bass!
