1.
How did that sound? A bit like slap and pickle? I'lll get me coat…...
2.
I use a pick, my fingers, my thumb, whatever I feel is required. Sometime I have even been known to use my head. Not often though.
I once played bass with our singers sandwich when he wasn't looking in a rehersal.
 3. I wrote a paper on this for my school. It's as when people think of musicians, they think of the bands they like/music they like and for the majority of people those bands (or at least some of them) are famous, and wealthy and earn alot, and are in the public eye, so they draw that as a stereotype/conclusion. Or at least I feel that's part of it. As wrong as it is, and the fact it's based on a minority.
 4.
Some people like fret w****ers... other people like the guys who sit in the pocket and do what is needed for the song. i on the other hand prefer cupcakes i cant stand billy sheehan but i know hes amazing. i hope some of you may understand
Can't stand him even when he's slogging low notes?
 5. Awake - Dream Theater Next Time Around or To Be With You - Mr Big Countless others, but those are really my very favourite (and they are all rather different!) Oh and things Brain May did
 6. Anything. There are archetype and sterotype sounds. But you can sound and play however you want to, regardless of context.
 7. I have gigged one Wasn't bad! Can't comment on the neck, as the one I played had a modded neck (had be shaved down to owners liking, was kind of like a flatter ibanez) Felt pretty solid, paint was decent. Was with a Doom-core band (Yes, obscure weird and making no sense. So, loud idiots boucing around on stage) and it survived! Would get one if it was super cheap for teaching bad students
 8. Karl, are you friends with any memembers on Facebook? Then they could add you to the group via the "add friend to group" option. Should get you around the having to go onto the page to request to join thing!
 9.
Thanks Chris2112. That was more of the sort of thing I was after seeing/hearing. But from what I could see and hear he only used the extra upper range of the instrument when he was soloing without the other instruments in the band. In the ensemble sections he's sticking pretty much to the conventional bass guitar range. Without the video I'd have assumed that the solo was being done by a conventional 6-string guitar on a clean sound. In fact the two parts were so disconnected that they could have probably been done with a bass/guitar double neck or even two separate instruments and well rehearsed roadies!
Annnddd http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hjzk_91HkO0 Was recorded with a 9 string the orginal though. You only really uses the 7 string range. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cjZ47iwv_Q That's more 7 string, another band I really like and their bassist Mark is a really nice guy and a great player. That track uses the full range of the 7 string on that track,
 10.
Thanks... However playing along to a backing track or drum machine in your bedroom/studio where the "bass" has been brought out of the mix by boosting in volume doesn't really give any idea of how these instruments work in a band setting and how they sit in the arrangement/mix. The Nuclear Rabbit track sounded like it might be interesting, but again it was difficult to hear how all the instruments fitted together in the arrangement from the crap sound of the camera phone in the audience. So are there any clips of these instruments in a properly mixed and recorded band setting? Video would be nice so I can see who is playing what - to me without any visual context a lot of the tapping stuff sound like it's being done on a sequencer. BTW is it just me or does the bassist in the last clip have the top three strings removed from his instrument?
Surely it shows more clearly how it sits from an arrangement point of view if it's more louder? I used that one for that reason but no matter! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBDvDBuLKEY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2--4ucg1Ic
I saw Unexpect at a Dream Theater gig and thought it was appalling although a lot of that could have easily been put down to sound...
I REALLY love the band, and their bass player is a complete monster! Each to their own though!
 11.
So can anyone post a clip of a 9+ string "bass" being used in a band context?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGVyk_TObCo Very, erm, different music there (different in a different way haha!) Though I like it, but each to their own, totally get why people would hate it! Scottish band now, but the bassist has since left Maelstrom. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wZopGCasvk&feature=related Those are four from the top of my head, Though I've seen a 9/10 string in a couple jazzy style groups too, and once with a vox/bass/drums set up And an 8 with Piano/Bass/Drums set up both were in New Orleans
 12.
So can anyone post a clip of a 9+ string "bass" being used in a band context?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLeXaxlSbc8&feature=g-all He's doing a play along to the track but he is the bass player of the band, Genre is down to taste, (personally I love the band) An 11 string in band context, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnAXoWQqexw Again very weird music (I love it though!) very much down to taste. Saw Unexpect live and instanty loved it. Nuclear Rabbit was played at a gig I was at before the show though the PA and I asked the sound guy what it was!
 13.
The people who play one seem to care enough to want to classify it as a bass instrument.
Only because so many people are so quick to say "that's not a bass" or "what is the point?" when these instruments appear, In my experience that is,
 14.
i would love to here from 9 string players about techniques, possible songs and see more examples rather than "thats not a bass" "yes it is" I mean who cares what it is classified as.
ChaotH from Unexpect is a fantastic example (IMHO) of a bass player who does the bass thing fantastically, has great chops and a great sense of melody. Jean Baudin in his Nuclear Rabbit and Element of Surprise days too!
 15.
Thing is Adam he didn't have the guts to warn me, pull me up about it, discuss it or even inform me I had been kicked out, he simply removed my permissions without even mentioning it. GUTLESS. Spoilt Brat-ish. He's a coward and a cyber bully. Your maturity at your age, shames him even more. There is a chap on here selling an Attitude 11. He was asking if anybody knew where he might get some interest. I hummed and hawed about PM ing him and decided in the circs it may be better if somebody else points him in the direction of Yamaha Attitude Ltd Facebook page .
Oh yeah I get that and I totally agree it was completely uncalled for, since he gave no warning no explaination. It is simply unfair on you. I've considered messaging Anders but am not convinced of where it will lead... Maybe he's had a mini power trip? And thank you that means alot.
 16. Try using a clean blend using something like a BOSS LS-2 or by getting a Muff modded with one,
 17.
Puh, nobody has any taste at all if they like seafoam, antigua, green, sunburst, lacquer, natural, oiled or invisible.
Ouch... my taste Personally I think everyone is being as bad as one another on the page! Karl, I do agree that you being booted out without a wrist slap or a "Reminder: Keep things as on topic as possible" is overly harsh, and unnecessary. Anders is a good guy, though he was being over zealous! One thing I've learnt from Basschat is how to get along with people and I'm very thankful for the community for that, and maybe it's as the average age of the forum is a good few years older than I am. For example I whole heartedly disagree with Rick's Fine '52 s opinon on the Attitude, but that's fine as we are all entitled to our opinions. As long as we don't cause unneed arguements and hurt feelings it's alright, and we can all get along with out too much conflict or issues! Entirely IMO though!
 18.
But trombones come in various ranges: e.g. tenor, alto, bass. Being a bass guitar is about the range of the instrument not the construction, it's the construction that makes it a guitar. Similarly, for trombones (or any other instrument) it's the construction that makes it a trombone (or whatever), it's the range that makes it bass or alto (or whatever). The wider the range of the instrument the less possible or sensible it is to call it 'bass' or 'alto' or whatever.
Yes, you get Tenor, Bass and Alto trombones for example, but a Bass trombone has the exact range of a tenor and alto but greater (if the player has the ability). Though I totally get what you mean when you ay the wider the range and I do somewhat agree, but I think an instrument, as part of a family should get it's name from it's commonly written area of pitch. As that's more or less how it's been done in classical areas, and I guess that's probably just because I'm used to it!
Looks like a bass, sounds like a bass, plays like a bass, played through a bass rig. That's good enough for me
+1 haha!
 19.
Eh? Billy's Attitude bass was developed by Yamaha based upon his modified Fender Precision bass!!! Do the forum guys think his Yamaha model was created after s dream he had or something?
The wife is often discussed on the pages, one is being discussed right now! Will ask Anders and try and ask Billy about this!
 20.
Or just think you're better off without a bunch of weirdos who spaff over an annoyingly smug egotist to an insane degree.
Ouch, right in the personal feelings.
 21.
Is it though? I think it all depends on how you string/tune it. IMO Dood's 7-string that goes from F# to C still counts, but most of these ERBs go all the way into guitar range (and beyond) rather than solely concentrating on the bass end of the musical spectrum. Rather than being called Extended Range Basses they should be "Full Range Stringed Instruments". They can be used for bass parts in the same way that a piano or a harp can, but in the hands of a suitably able player they are capable of much more. However I don't think that they count as bass guitars anymore. They are something different.
Most ERBs have F#s and C#s too, It's tuned in straight forths, like a bass. What you say "most of these ERBs go all the way into guitar range (and beyond) rather than solely concentrating on the bass end of the musical spectrum." Well, A low C# is pushing the boundries of human hearing as it is, and because it it is able too it is no longer a bass? If I "sing" a high note on a tuba is it no longer a tuba because I can? (Note I can tell my tone is coming a cross a bit aggressive here, and it's not meant to be! I just can't seem to think of a better way of wording it so apologies in advance!) You can play using harmonics notes into the same range on a 4 string using harmonics closer to the bridge than the fretboard. I personally place them in the same family, as I would a valved Trombone and a slide Trombone. (I'll stop with the brass comparisions haha!) An 8/9 string bass tuned with a low F# add's 5/10 more notes upwards, and with a low C# only five more than a four string. All IMO though!
 22.
I have played a 13 string, I think anything over 6 becomes a different instrument, there are some good players but for my experience it's less about music and more about showing off.
Well I guess that's a personal thing, for example if you "need" the range a 7 string bass provides in one song or set, and you like the bass then it makes sense to use it, and that opens the subjectiveness of what music you play can of worms. Though each to their own, totally get what you mean. There are a few too many who have an ERB but only touch the top half of the neck and the top strings!
 23.
Surely a 9 string bass isn't actually a bass is it? There's that guy on YouTube playing Mario Brothers on an "11 string bass" but it states in the description that it is actually a tapping instrument like the Stick. Wouldn't a 9 string bass effectively be the same thing?
It's a bass. Both are basses, "That guy" is Jean Baudin, and I'm wearing one of his T-shirts atm He's not "really" playing it like a stick, a stick is piano you tap, he's doing it on a bass. So it's a bass. There are a few ERB players on here, binky_bass owns Jean Baudins famous Pac 9 bass and will probably be along shortly with a few others!
 24. How very John Entwistle Love it man!
 25.
of sound does the neck pickup produce? Is it muddy?
It's a beautiful bass, love my Sea Foam green, though it needs a sister haha! The Red is done over a gold sparkle finish and it's mighty in the flesh looks even more wonderful. The Willpower is a based on the model one which is a super refined EBO, not muddy but nice and deep and fat and warm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIno_p20KGs At the 2:50 mark is a good demo. That and teh "Billy Sheehan's Secret Trick" videos show why he is IMHO one of the best bassists in history!
