1. Hey, welcome snorkie. That was probably my Selmer you bought
2. Hi there. Welcome to BC. A fair few of us here. You can tell who by the reaction when the letters E and U get mentioned together. Got O'Brien genes myself, although the implications for bass playing are not clear.
3.
Unfortunately the Publishing rights are not very friendly to the drummers and bass players who lay down the groove that makes a track rock. They are only interested in three things. 1. The Words 2. The 'top-line' melody (usually the tune that the above Words are sung to) 3. The Chords (least important of the three as sometimes the melody can work with alternative chords) Everything else (and I mean everything!) is just arrangement/production - no publishing royalties for either of those unless names are specified for the arrangement, and the exact arrangement is used. Change the drum beat slightly, fiddle with the bass line - voila different arrangement, no royalties. Just the writer of top line and chords get royalties for publishing.
This is spot on.
4.
...Or the dining table will have to go ...
Drum riser, anyone?
5.
do you think its worth getting a stand, do any of you guys have a stand?
I love my stand. Sits in the corner and means I don't have to fret about stability every time I put the bass away. I don;t use it at gigs though cos there's rarely enough room.
6. Welcome to BC, lupo. You've come to the right place. I never could have gotten started on upright without the amazingly helpful folks on here. If you're looking to buy, it's a good place too.
7. I'll defo get to a gig. The course is out of the question for two reasons, one I can't get more than a day at a time free, and two I'd be too scared as irredeemably rubbish
8.
I should practice what I preach. I am working through some Back pieces and the Eccles Sonata and some days I make progress then some days I take two steps backwards. I need a teacher myself ... I don't want to hijack the thread but both Rufus Reid and John Goldsby are the Bass tutors in the Sligo Jazz course 2012. Both are amazing players but Rufus is the Yoda of the bass.
omg. That's a residential type course though, isn't it?
9. What a thoughtful wife you've got . I've been watching DT on the rebroadcasts of Aly Baine's Transatlantic sessions lately. Lovely stuff. he's one of the very few bass players who can play trad Irish without making it clumpy. Seems to me he mimics uileann pipe drones. Works beautifully.
10. Glad to hear you're on the mend.
11. My db with piezzo sounded ok through my old Trace BLX-80, but only if I used a preamp. The thought of humping around a Trace AND a db makes my back ache, though.
12.
Get a teacher!
+1 And do it soon as possible in order not to get hurt. As for DVDs etc, I found Rufus Reid's book great. He gets you playing only the right hand on open strings for a long time - very effective. An inspirational player to watch and listen to. Ed Friedland's Jazz Upright Bass DVD is a better teaching aid though imo, with better organisation and presentation. Great for right hand technique and explains a lot about jazz playing for peeps like me that knew nothing about it at all. The one certain thing is, you won't ever regret making the move. As Sarah says, prepare for life to get very interesting indeed.
13. I have to bump this because it's so beautiful. Well out of my league though.
14. Have you tried it at home with the speaker pointed away so you don't get feedback, and see how loud it gets?
15. 350w @ 8 should be plenty loud enough. That's a tad more than I have, and our drummer is loud. Assuming you've cut the lows, sounds like it's the feedback preventing you turning up enough. I was advised on here to find the feedback frequency characteristic of my bass and always use an eq setting (notch filter in my case) that cut that out, which helped. As Mr. Bassman says, the phase switch might help too. Other than that, you need to point the speaker away from the bass. Raising it up is a big help too, but I found if I raised it more than about 20" I lost too much volume. Other factors maybe in play? Steel strings are said to feed back more than synthetic. Also, the pickup/bass combination. I had much more feedback trouble with a Bassmax than I do now with a Full Circle. Other basses may favour other pickups. I doubt it's the amp, from what you've said.
16.
The iamp 900 I owned had no fan at all. EA claimed the circuitry ran cool so it didn't need one. It's not exactly a micro amp but I wonder if the same principle extends to the current EA range.
the EA Doubler (and micro I presume) has a fan, but it's so quiet you wouldn't know it was there.
17.
thanks for the replies but it's not really the feedback that's the main problem it's the lack of volume i'm getting, the amp is rated at 350watts to i expected it to be pretty loud but it's not loud at all. by the second set i'd cut a lot of bottom end & got a pretty decent sound but even on max it was only just loud enough,i think i need a bigger amp.
+1 to killing those very low frequencies. Is that 350w into 4ohms or 8? If you're not getting all of 350 and the drummer is loudish you may well struggle.
18.
Ford Cougar (which uses the older Mondeo floor plate - and has a smaller cabin but a larger boot), and I can get one in, along with a combo. Place pretty much as already described: body behind front passenger's seat, placed diagonally, on its back - combo goes behind the driver's seat, with all the accessories in the other free boot corner. Keep three old duvets in the boot for protecting and stabilising gear.
Hey, Cougar here too. I measured the bass before I bought the car to fit. What a motor. A van disguised as a coupe.
19.
OBBM!!! Emailed sat, paid Sunday, arrived Tuesday. Top draw service and quality product.
Pretty much the same here. Top class.
20. Strange I see not much love here for the 1X12 or 1X15 solution in pubs, but the neos are so portable, and you just double up if you need to. f you can afford it, check out BFB compact or midget. Loud.
21.
lol i've cheated & stuck some side position markers on,done wonders for my confidence playing the beast.
I do the same, although because i do Rabbath fingering mostly, they're actually marking thumb positions. I reckon that the snooty view of markers is misplaced. If you're a classical player or jazzer, you're not going to move around much, so the arm angle stays the same. Do a bit of rockabilly posing and you can't rely on that; markers help to reorientate yourself imo. As for BG, i found the same as you. Didn't touch the thing for a year. Now though i find it's useful for trying out new theory-based stuff cos I can sit there and noodle until i understand what I'm doing. Feels like playing a toy though.
22. Glad the gig went well soundwise. The rest, hey you win some, you etc...
23. You'll have a ball. Don't worry about a thing. The big surprise to me was all those people wanting to talk to me before and after. I mean who wants to talk to the bass guitarist (apart from other bass guitarists)?
24. The mag will hugely increase the volume you can play at without feedback. I'd be amazed if it didn't solve your problem. No harm at all though trying to understand the source of the trouble. Was the bass in the foldback mix? How far away from your bass was your cab? Was it pointing straight at you? Are you close to the drums? etc etc. You can ask would a different piezzo give you the same trouble? Would raising the can help? Would notching the frequency out fix it etc. Then worry about beachballs or IEM. You can experiment with most of these things at home or in a practice.
25. You could rip it anyway. Much handier than messing with disks.
