Tell me about the Jazz scene as I need a new challenge
If you are used to playing venues & pubs to few or no people, Jazz will be right up your Strasse. Unless i have been unlucky. Garry
Poverty = God's punishment fro playing jazz. -
Don't tell anyone, but I just got a Jazz notation book from the library It is only to help me with reading....... honest! (my misses is no longer talking to me)
I have to admit that 95% of my listening is now jazz. Not long ago, i would have shot myself for saying that. I now see that once you dig through the dross, there's some wonderful music. What a lot of dross there is to get through though (which could, of course, be said of any genre).

Maybe it's just me, but I'm finding the best height for pizz, the one that gives me the most comfortable and safest left wrist, is seriously uncomfortable for arco. I presume that's because I bend a bit for arco. I was under the impression that the pin for arco is supposed to allow you bow more or less in the middle of the bridge-tail area without bending (much). is that right? Unfortunately, that's way too high for my liking. Does anyone else find the comfort zone isn't the same, and if so do you compromise or what?
But seriously, are really good players lacking such imagination that they can't think to do something a little different? Unfortunately, this is the type of thing that you hear time and again from a lot of jazz artists, and the Grammy's seem to celebrate this in abundance.
It's the main (but not the only) reason why so many people can't stand jazz.
In Macedonia, they make bagpipes out of whole goats. I saw someone playing one like this in Poland. Tip: if you're at work, don't go searching google for 'man blowing goat bagpipes'
You sure playing is what he's doing?
Uillean pipes. Proper.
You can see why wars were a bit of a problem for us. The guys at the front with the pipes really need to be standing up, preferably marching bravely forward. This sitting on a stool approach lacks something indefinable. Worse if you actually get up off the stool and try advancing, of course. Attacking crabwise is pretty unimpressive.

Excited Noob wants some preamp advice
fatback replied to BassInMyFace's topic in EUB and Double Bass
The phase thing shouldn't matter if you're not using a mic and a piezzo at the same time. The notch filter is the one folks use for feedback killing, but I don't know if it's worth extra cost of a Fishman over a DHA. Those Fishmans don't come up second hand that often is the problem. I'd wait and see about feedback before worrying about it tbh. Maybe conserve cash in case the bp100 doesn't suit your bass at all and you want to try a Bassmax or something? The DHA is very good quality for the price. -
I did a fade out on a folk cover a few weeks ago - I just walked slowly backwards and played gentler and gentler until I was behind the back stage curtain.
Isn't that the cue for falling over backwards with loud clanging noises off?

OK, here we go - tadaaa! You're right, I should get out more. EDIT - got another DOT! Biggest achievement all day.
No doubt. I think Alex and Bobby have just got a new CNC machine so they'll probably be a bit busy with that for now...
What's a CNC machine? I confess I'm only asking to see me tick up to 999 posts I expect the one after to produce a shining light in the sky and a flurry of esoteric bass knowledge to descend on my head. And suddenly to be able to play in tune.

http://www.millenniu...amp-stand-bs317 (other stores also stock them) thanks for that bren. Just the thing, and reasonably priced. i'm curious what alex at barefaced has up his sleeve though. Bet he has an extra selling point somewhere.
Anyway back to the topic, I think there is a point to a 4 ohm cab and that's when you're using these little micro heads and they start running out of headroom at 8 ohms. The speaker is loud enough, but the amp is compromising the tone. Sometimes that little jump from (notional) 300 to 500 watts is all you need.
That was my thinking, just wondering whether i could get more out of little EA doubler than I'm getting with the midget. re the auralex, I have some auralex strips that cope with boominess nicely and cheaply, but I think a proper wedge stand is what I need to try now. I imagine the forthcoming (?) barefaced product will be well thought through.
-
Definitely from what you've all said, the extra output wouldn't be enough to matter. As for the problems resulting from raising the cab, I've posted about that before and it seems the loss of low and low mid isn't from lack of contact but from boundary cancellation. Basically, i'm raising the cab too high. The wedge is a good idea (wonder if Alex is offering his yet?). Failing that, I'll have to rely on the notch filter. Which is what better brains than mine advised me all along
-
Thanks for the thoughts. My amp does go down to 2, as it happens, but the point I'm getting here is that the gain from the 4 vs 8 probably isn't worth bothering with, given that I've already got a sensitive cab. I was thinking about this mainly cos when I raise my cab on a stand (to avoid feedback from the upright) I lose a lot of oomph. So i was idly wondering whether a lower impedence cab would free up some headroom. You can see that a two cab solution couldn't work for this. Most likely, i'm going to try raising the cab by a lot less and hoping it's as effective at avoiding the feedback demons. Pity, cos raising the cab totally avoids any problem even at very high volumes.
I've got two 12" EA wizzys. Both 4 ohm. One is the Mline and one normal. I prefer the Mline version for upright but it is a touch heavier.
Are they neos, Geoff?
-
I would look at getting a Super12 rather than 2 different 112 cabs. You could then either run the Midget, the Super12 or both as a very powerful 312 rig.
Not really thinking of two cabs; I need the portability of one. I was wondering if I could get more out of a different 1X12 than the 8 ohm Midget can give me. That Midget is loud, though. Perfect solution might in theory be a 4ohm Midget?
-
Driving an 8 ohm Midget 1X12 atm with an EA Doubler, and it's pretty loud. Wondering what choice of neo 1X12 4 ohms might be out there, though. If they're not common, is there any particular reason why?
Thanks! Will maybe just have to accept that this DVD just costs quite a bit (and is probably totally worth it) and buy it from there. What were your thoughts on it in the end? I've basically been starting to apply something similar Rabbath's technique a lot more in my playing (especially for faster bop lines), but in a very ad hoc, disorganised manner. Hoping to get a more complete coverage of his LH, so I can take a bit more a structured approach.
I haven't got it yet, but the art of the bow was so good I'll be ordering soon. It's bound to be an eye opener. Pity about the price, but i believe that was set by the University, who seem to have been thinking of selling to institutions rater than skint players. No commercial sense at all.

I haven't been able to find a european source. The only source I've found is Film Baby. they say it's an all-region DVD. Film Baby 13909 NE Airport Way Portland, OR 97230 1-877-345-6222 "] www.filmbaby.com

Very best of luck. Above all enjoy it. Have fun. If you do, they will. If you're really stressed about intonation, put a little white sticky paper dot on the edge of the fingerboard at the A and G. Since I started doing that I've never had a worry about getting completely lost, even when I jump about. Not very PC in some circles, I know.

Never thought I'd be posting in this thread.. Totally by accident came across Ahmad Jamal on a French TV channel last night. Jazz in Vienna gig. Now this kind of jazz I can live with. James Kammack on bass - awesome. This seems to be the same gig (although not the best track):
I hadn't played with those guys before and bless them they threw me a solo in the last tune. I don't play solos at all but this tune was right in my comfort zone (reggae feel, harmonic minor) and it was just me and the drummer so I gave it a good bash.
Oh well done for coping. My nightmare is someone ambushing me like that.
