Doe a bass tutorial book exist that isn't dry as an old stick?
yamahabass replied to Clarky's topic in Theory and Technique
I am rubbish at theory and have a large pile of books at home that I thought at various times would help me through the maze. Trouble is they are all as dull as ditch-water and I give up faster than you can say E flat minor seventh. Take Chuck Rainey's tutor book (called something like Modern Bass Guitar or Electric Bass Guitar). It simply includes pages upon pages of scales, arpeggios etc with no musical context. Does anyone know of a bass tutorial book that could actually make this stuff fun by bringing in real life applications. By which I mean, perhaps showing a scale, relating it to the composition and melody or bass line of a well-known track, then taking variations to show how it could be applied in different styles? When jakesbass did a tutorial at the SE BassBash last year he did something along these lines and it was very inspiring - unfortunately all I can remember of his talk now is his enthusiasm, ability and that awesome Alembic! Edit: I know lessons from a good tutor would help but I have very little time as I leave the house for work at 6am, get home 7.30pm-ish and have a wife and three kids to amuse/deal with etc (as well as BassChat to stare at endleessly). Practically speaking I couldn't do more than one maybe two lessons a month
i dont want to be an old odd ball, but..... i actually really loved the chuck rainey modern bass books and they really do give you a good foundation that will aid you for years to come -
Hi! i have a gig tomorrow , Sunday 20/01/2013, at The Albert Inn, Hitchin near Stevenage. We will be playing from 3pm - 5pm The trio plays 'cool jazz' , really into the 60's west coast sounds of Art Pepper, Chet Baker and Stan Getz of course. So most of the heads will be performed on the bass guitar, we play a lot of bossa's , swing and modal tunes but all are familiar standards. If anyone is in the area and wants to pop in please do and say hello! i guess its free entree heres an example of my playing : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMrXdYp81aE cheers! Joe
Hey Joe. The recording ain't great, but your playing is! Very fluid with some great little flourishes. I really like the harmonic around 1:40-something. Make me realise I need to practice... lots!
haha no im sure you are great man! the harmonic is really dumb hehe its just a rake on either the 4th fret for an Emaj chord or a rake on the 7th fret for an Emin chord

hi! sorry to take so long to reply, been away fro, bass for awhile in general but now im back! well, i would say that you are 100 % on the right path with charlie parker, if you get down any of his licks you are def on the money i would try to play his licks up high on your bass but also down low so you can develop a nice style all over your bass. love to hear your solo vids so let me know when you have the, uploaded till then.....

Sounds awesome dude! How's your wrist? Lol

Right! If you watch my bsssblogger vid I touch on this subject and how Chet baker played off the melody , which gave him that coolong jazz sound. I haven't been playing the melody in these videos because they are not performances, just exercising soloing ideas. I have actually a wholet project involving the bass guitar playing headisband I'm working on a nice repertoire for a few gigs. So again guys pleasee don't judge these as fully finished performances, it's just soloing vids I share for the like minded bassist that wants to learn iron exchange ideas. Thx for listening

Hey Bilbo Haha Thx for the advice , the heads are in the pipeline. Just posting up videos of my progress soloing over standards and to exchange soloing ideas with other bassist s who are working on their soloing approach. Im by no means trying or wanting to be a pro bassist... just having fun playing I respect you guys that are pro, and the attitude you need to attain to be a pro . My intention is to keep things light hearted and just play the bass and have fun doing it Thx again Bilbo for your advice and kind words. Joe
