1. Worked this one out the other day....Not a Mogwai fan, but love this, and the tone from that Ricky And here's another classic from the vaults And a bit of Yob for ya. Love this one, just builds, and builds
2.
Definitely! Once I've finished listening to some Tom Waits, Spirit Caravan and then Wino's solo stuff will be played.
Yeah love the new solo album. Plenty of YouTube footage of live shows about. He seems to be throwing a lot of old Obsessed, and Spirit Caravan numbers into the live shows.
3.
Oooh Spirit Caravan! Nice! I can't wait to get home to see what the other links are...
Cheers! I'm a massive fan of stuff that Wino has been doing over the years. The guy seems to know how to lay down some of the heaviest tunes known to man, without having to resort to uber drop tuning. Very talented guy. The Crowbar track is one of my faves....Definately lives up to the Crowbar moniker of "tune low, play slow"
4. Some more from me This one is best heard through some decent speakers, to get the best from the bowel shaking Gibson EB2 Seriously old school Seriously heavy......Beard Of DOOOM!
5. If only I had the money.....That's gorgeous +1 for Alembic's oozing quality. If this Elan is anything like my Orion, she'll play like butter, and have some lovely tones on tap too. Second hand Alembic's must be the biggest bargain of the bass world. Have a free bump on me
6. Another classic by Prong;
7. Why, thankyou sir! Absolutely love The Obsessed
8. +1 for Motorhead's "Bomber" lighting rig. There's some footage on YouTube somewhere, Lemmy climbs on it, up it goes, and he machine guns the crowd with his trusty Rickenbacker! Here's some drop tuned, killer grooves; And a somewhat bluesy Motorhead......Love the bass sound! Not particularly a Rush fan, but love this one
9. One for Mr Foxen this one I have rather an eclectic taste in rock music, and this is at the more extreme ends of my taste....Rather interesting bass as well! Make sure you crank this one all the way to 11 Starts off nice and slow, stays slow, and gets rather LOUD!!
10. Don't know how much help this will be but......... Try a set of DR DDT's, with a 110 on the bottom. One band I am in tunes drop C. I have used these on a Gibson, and currently have a set of these on my Rickenbacker, and they're great. No floppyness, even on the slightly shorter scale Ric. They didn't pull the neck all over the place either. Also using DR DDT's for drop D as well, on a 105 set, equally good results. The 105 set works with drop C, just a little too light
11. For me, I like to do the best I can with the money I've got........This is where the whole Fender thing falls apart for me. Don't get me wrong, I really like Fender's. Comfy to play, and what looks cooler than a 70's Jazz with block markers and ash trays Problem is, when you look at how much a '75 reissue USA is for example, then have a look around the second hand ads, etc, or look to what is available from the likes of, say, Ibanez, etc, for a lot less money, I can't convince myself that a USA Fender is worth the money. When you think that you can get a second hand Alembic for around the same money as USA models, it's a bit of a no brainer really for me. I really like the look of the new 5 string deluxe models, with the block markers, etc. They look uber cool, but one would have a hard time justifying to me that it is worth the dosh.
12. +1. To Hutton's comment Quite a few valid points made, but some smack of trolling to me..... Been on this site quite a while now, and sorry, one or two of the comments on here have been the nastiest I have ever seen on BC. Poor form
13. Funny enough, had the same conversation last night...Having recently gone over to 5 string, which has taken me a little out of my comfort zone, having been playing 4 string bass the maybe 20 years, I have found myself struggling a little on dark stages... The bass I am using is an Alembic Orion, which has no dot markers on the fret board face, and the side dots are tiny, which in the dark are next to useless. Going to start practicing in the dark, or make sure that I don't look at the fret board when I am practicing, so hopefully this will help....... Probably gonna sound like Les Dawson on bass for a while!!
14. So what are they like?? I keep looking at the five string model, and thinking yummy I love a Jazz bass with a rosewood board, and block markers.... Doesn't seem to be much out there on the net about them TBH
15. I was, and still am, a massive Motorhead fan, and seeing Lemmy out front, trusty Rickenbacker being strummed within an inch of its life, I always thought how cool is that! Steve Harris was another good reason. Hearing bass lines for the likes of "Number Of The Beast", where the bass just rules the song from start to finish, also made me take interest. My School mates were all into the goth stuff, like Sisters Of Mercy, and Fields Of The Nephilim, and I especially noticed the bass pounding along on the Nephilim stuff. Hawkwind, with either Lemmy, or Alan Davey got my attention too. So that was it, hooked! My first bass was a Precision, with the "Legend" moniker on the headstock, and still have it to this day. My second bass is the Rickenbacker that I still own, and the Rickenbacker certainly inspired me to start taking playing bass a bit more seriously, and it was so lovely to play after learning the basics on a cheapy. I still sit up and take notice when I hear music where the bass is at the front. I can remember years ago watching a TV music awards type thing, and Mogwai were on there. Got it on video somewhere. The bass player was using a Rickenbacker, and switching between nice clean sounding melodies, and raging, overdriven power chords. Just how a Rickenbacker should be played
16. Been wondering what to do about the pick ups on my Rickenbacker for some time, as the E string has gone a bit weak. Looks like Andy @ Wizard is the man?
17. Glad you got the pictures H Surprised you haven't had a sniff on this yet. Mine has got a really low action, and is lovely to play. Definately a keeper. Have a free bump on me
18. I recently had to make the move to a 5 string, as both bands I am in have songs on the set list that require a low A, but still require the G string. I'm playing hard rock/ metal. I managed to pick up a second hand Alembic Orion from the for sale section of this site, and it's an awesome rock bass. Loads of growl on offer, and so easy to play. Made the switch to 5 string really easy. The build quality on Alembic's is sublime, and they are real bargains in terms of second hand values, and well within your budget. Seem to remember there's an Alembic epic 5 string on here at the moment, that is well within your budget
19. Lovely, very early Les Paul bass the same as mine. Mine will completely smoke a Fender in terms of low end grunt If only I had the money to have twins
20. Problem is they're a bit of an under rated niche market kinda bass.... As far as trade value goes, I would have thought you want to be looking at least £700 minimum, but if I was selling mine, I would want at least £1000. Might be better off trying a private sale first. Got any pictures to share? I have a 1991 Flat top Les Paul bass, with the Barts, etc, although they didn't officially come out until 1992
21. I've always used Autoglym Super Resin Polish on both nitro cellulose, and poly finishes with excellent results. Have been using it my basses for at least 15 years with no problems. If I have any fine scratches to polish out, I use 3M Finesse It, which is a very fine cutting compound, and far superior/ kinder than T Cut. T Cut contains amonia, so would give a wide bearth. For rose wood fret boards, I've been using Dunlop Lemon Oil for a while, with good results
22. Defo can't do the 20th, as I am booked on a training course to become a dog trainer for the whole weekend
23. I have an Indonesian made Squier Affinity Jazz bass. Very well put together, and sounded pretty good straight out the box. Even came well set up. The fit and finish of everything well above par for a bass of that price, and in fact, is better put together than a USA Jazz I have seen recently! I have modded mine a little, and fitted a better bridge, and also fitted an EMG J Set of pickups. It can hold it's own against far more expensive basses. As far as I know, the body wood on mine is Agathis/ Basswood, and the neck is Maple.
24. As far as people walking in when I am practicing, I've kinda got used to it, as I practice in the living room at home. After a while, you just tend to not notice any more when someone walks in. As a nipper, I used to play piano, under mothers watchful eye, so maybe that helped a little. Sometimes it can help to have someone on the same playing level as you to jam with. Not so much pressure, and you can help each other to learn and improve. For taking to the stage, I tend to spend a little time beforehand mentally preparing. I'm naturally quite a shy, retiring sort of chap, so my way of coping is to imagine I am a different person, who is very confident. works for me anyway
