Easiest method of switching between 2 different Eq settings
The Funk replied to Delberthot's topic in Amps and Cabs
Aye, either go down the photo route or try good, old-fashioned masking tape and marker pen. If you're feeling really extravagant, you could buy two identical preamps and keep the relevant settings for each of them fixed - and just switch between them with a switching pedal of some kind. -
Which musicians (other than bass) do you admire?
The Funk replied to OutToPlayJazz's topic in General Discussion
Drums: Bernard Purdie, Mike Clark, Lenny White, Ginger Baker. Guitar: Jeff Beck, Al di Meola, Rodney Jones. Keyboards: Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea. One-man musical phenomena: Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Jimi Hendrix, Dizzy Gillespie. -
The EBS Microbass II has speaker simulation on the DI
And a nifty effects loop... I usually gig with that as my DI.

Without knowing what flightcase and whether it's specific to any particular instrument, I'd say between £50 and £100.
-
Most people won't pay any extra for the included flight case. You might get more money if you split the two and sell them separately. I'd say you're unlikely to get more than £1000 for it at the moment. It's a real shame as they're fantastic basses.
-
Remember, there are 3 reasons to do a gig: 1. You're learning something 2. You're having fun 3. You're getting paid. If none of those 3 reasons are there - and you should be able to tell from the audition - don't bother with it. I've done one audition. It went well. I poached the drummer.
Yeah - I'd advise you not to listen to me as a starting point. Maybe the Funk will tell you what it means. Or you can Google it. The internet is full of this kind of information, although wikipdeia pages etc might not be the most beginner-friendly resources.
Well, the other guys explained 4/4 pretty well. Try to "hear" the music in groups of 4 beats. What Sleepy said, to do with accents, is a bit more sophisticated than that basic concept. Once you can hear the music in groups of 4 beats, you'll be able to hear that 1 or more of those 4 beats is accented, as in louder or more forceful than the others. In most funk/rock/blues/soul/jazz/punk/indie/hip-hop/dance/electro in 4/4, there is an accent on the 1 and a pair of accents on the 2 and 4. The accents on the 2 and 4 are called "the backbeat". You'll often hear a kick drum on the 1 and a snare on the 2 and the 4. In reggae, there's an accent on the 3. Don't worry about any of that for now. Just try to hear the music in groups of 4 beats... but beware! Some songs are in other time signatures (ie. groups of 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or any number of notes). But none of this matters if you don't join a band right now and get playing with a drummer! Playing bass on your own without a drummer is a bit like having sex on your own without a woman.

Major and Minor Scale Modes? and a host of others
The Funk replied to Cliff Burton's topic in Theory and Technique
Get Dorian under your belt next. It's the most useful one (arguably). -
See, not a clue what that means haha 4/4 is a very, very common time signature for rock music like Kings of Leon. It basically means that every fourth beat is accented.
That's not what it means. At all.
So could I just release, for example, a book called "Abbey Road Changes" listing chords with titles of music by a popular scouse beat combo, without paying any fees to anyone? Who can i contact to get an official response on this?
I'm sure once you come out with your book and Apple hear about it, the judge will give you an official response. But the truth is that you can't copyright a song title (hence all those sh*te movies based on song titles) and you can't copyright chord changes. All the old jazz greats would have been royally f***ed if chord changes were copyright-protected: geniuses as so many of them were, nonetheless they still only knew one song between them.
Heres another cat among the pigeons !! Are they good BASS PLAYERS ? Who gets more work Jeff Berlin or Ron Carter?
Ron Carter - but luckily for him, he started off in an era before the birth of the "bass hero" so he didn't get caught up in all the nonsense. I'm not a fan of Jeff Berlin and I was pretty critical of his comments earlier in this thread, but there's no denying that the man can play the bass.

Are those 4 x 6" mid-range drivers?

Sorry, that was completely unhelpful of me. At least it did remind me to go look it up later for you. Here you go.

There's the 1U power amp that Dood and CK speak highly of. Can't remember who it's by now!

Finally have our debut gig! Any tips!
Only mention once if at all that it's your first gig, no one will really care, it's harsh but true.
Don't mention it at all. You probably won't sound like a "first gig band", so don't say anything that'll make you seem like a bunch of bedroom wusses. -
Sorry for my choice of words but it's not that easy in English..
Your English is better than most of ours. You should hear my Walloon. Back to your points, I am a Wooten fan. I think he's an excellent bass player. After this thread, I decided to check out a little Jeff Berlin. Turns out he's a pretty good bass player himself! I get what you're saying about people not giving an explanation for why they don't like something. But sometimes people dislike every single part of something - then they can't possibly tell you which aspect they don't like.

That's a good tip that people keep bringing up: remember to enjoy it. Sometimes you can start to forget that that's what it's all about. -
No they don't. They know that they are not as capable as the people they criticise but, in order to increase their self esteem, they negate the value of the things they can't do in an effort to subconsciously justify the fact that they can't or won't do the work necessary to attain those skills. The tragedy is that they actually have to work astonishingly hard on their train of self-talk in order to maintain a belief in what they are saying.
Are you sure that's what it is? When I make critical comments about people (eg. Tal Wilkenfeld), it's usually not that I think I am better than them. It's partly envy ("why does she get to play with such and such...?"), but most of it is having a clear idea of how I want to approach music - and seeing their work as a pefect embodiment of many of the things I want to avoid. Even if someone else has been playing a lot longer than you and is objectively a "better" player than you and has played with much better musicians than you have, that doesn't mean it's wrong to develop your own approach to playing as early on as possible. When you reach a certain level of maturity (which I haven't completely), then it's far easier not to criticise people who take a different approach to the one you're aspiring to.

It's too heavy if my back hurts after playing it standing up for 3 hours, or if my leg hurts after playing it sitting down for 4 hours.

Picks up after Marcus' solo which starts around 8:10. It's quite fun. Yes, it's silly. But fun can be silly.
