1.
Cheap shots are easy specially when your body of work can be written in a sheet of toilet paper.
Ouch! Oscar has his own way. He doesn't like Jazz, he hates Funk - and he pretty much hates everyone else's music. That's just his way.
What bothers me sometimes is that through the power of internet I experience bass-players picking on musicians like Berlin, Wooten, etc... with comments like "That playing sucks" "Terrible" "worst playing I've ever seen or heard". When you do have the opportunity of meeting these anonymous bassplayers with their big opinions about practically everybody and you see how théy play (with sometimes the occasional sloppy octave as their biggest sign of any musical imagination) I sometimes wonder where those people get the nerve to criticize world famous musicians who have worked their asses off to get as good as they are.. [...] What certain bassists have accomplished (and that goes for Cliff Burton, McCartney, Mick Karn, Lemmy, etc....) should be slightly considered before one posts any cheap or quick comment imho...
Agree with you, with the sole exception being Tal Wilkenfeld. I still can't see what any of the fuss is about and will continue to post comments along those lines until someone either explains it to me or she starts playing as well as everyone says she does.
2. You're having trouble getting a hi-fi sound out of an Eden rig? I've heard some people say they like the sound of the Eden heads or the cabs - but not together. You could try swapping your Eden 4x10s for something else - perhaps the EBS 2x10s or 2x12s?
3. Is it also that the Thumb has 26 frets as opposed to some of the other models? (I'm not sure if that's true - but I seem to remember hearing that somewhere).
4. Looks like a cool rig. If you buy it all new from somewhere, especially the same shop, then you should ask them to knock some money off. Get them to do the head + cabs for a flat £900 - that'd save you the cost of the cables which you could then get from OBBM.
5.
Personally, i find coordinated movs in a band a bit cheesy.
That's what I think. Now if we're talking coordinated moves in the crowd, that's something else.
6. Do you dance on stage? The only reason I ask is that my band has recently started bullying our singer to dance a bit on stage. He's responded by saying we should coordinate some moves at certain points for the whole band. So, which is cooler: the singer dances on his own, the band does a few coordinated moves - or both or neither? Bear in mind that my band is a funk band, not a metal band, punk band, prog or jazz-rock band. Singer dancing on his own... Band doing a few coordinated moves... Also, in general, what do you guys do when it comes to moving about on stage?
7. Victor Wooten and Jeff Berlin, in action together
8.
The two original super-combo's were the SWR Super Redhead and the Eden Metro, and I suspect they are more than capable of holding their own against the sweeping statement that a rig would blow them away. They are both heavy as f*** though.
What's that Mesa combo called? Looks pretty cool. Didn't one of our Geordie friends have one? (EDIT: That was it - Mesa Walkabout!) If the SWR Super Redhead sounds like the Baby Blue (but louder) then it should be fantastic. The Eden Metro should also sound pretty tasty.
9.
I've read that if your fingers get cut during live playing, throw in some salt.
Throw salt in the wound? Why not just be a man and play through it. Your bass isn't complete without at least one small blood stain. My 5-string has a small blood stain which has seeped into the wood and is now part of the instrument. My blood is now part of my bass. Just think about that for a second.
10. You can do it but you'll need to plan all the dynamic changes in the song before you record it, ie. in this bit we go quiet, in this bit we build up, in this bit we go nuts.
11.
Or an Audio card with direct monitoring.
That's what I have on my Digi 002. The mixer option is the simplest, for people who hate fiddling with the settings on different bits of software.
12. Wash your hands with warm water before you go on. That's what I like to call the "ghetto" warm-up. Handy when the rest of your band tells you you're on now and not in an hour, like you thought.
13. Awesome. I've been looking at Clovers for a while now. You'll have to let us know how it fares.
14. I love how some people interpreted my "reading will not teach you how to groove, just as grooving will not teach you how to read" comments as "reading is not useful" or even "theory is not useful". What I was trying to get across is that "reading", "harmony" and "groove" are all different things and that "groove" is one of the most fundamental and often neglected. To suggest that "groove" cannot be taught or improved, or that it should not be taught and that "reading" is more important is nonsense. And Jeff Berlin's swimmer analogy, stupid as it is, can be used to demonstrate this. When you first learn to swim, one of the first things you learn is how to stay afloat.
15. It should work fairly well. The Hartke is an 8 ohm cab (rated at 400W) and the GK puts out 320W @ 8 ohms. It should be fine.
16. Get another Ibby.
17.
It is not 'playing what you feel' - anyone who actually beleves that knows nothing about improvising.
I agree with everything you've said apart from this. An accomplished improviser will usually set out to express a certain feeling in the solo/jam. Obviously the range of feelings available to the improviser will be limited by the song and other instruments, but in a way it is playing what you feel (or tapping into what you once felt).
18. The DI outs on the GK heads are pretty good too, btw.
19. GK and Hartke go very well together IMHO. I used to run a GK 400RB into a Hartke 2.5XL. Very nice tone.
20. Easiest way around latency = mixer.
21. Sorry, I'm sometimes a bit blunt. Sounds like quite a cool set list though from what I can gather. Them Bones and Mr. Brownstone. What else are you guys playing?
22. Terrible idea. Don't do it! Honour Layne's memory. Play it properly - or unplugged.
23. You can get a new Hartke 4.5XL from GAK for £250. They sound pretty damn good to my ears but are obscenely heavy. A secondhand Ampeg or Warwick valve preamp would be a good choice, as would a secondhand QSC power amp. A new Gator rack 4U case would not cost more than about £65.
24.
Mark King used to tape his thumb IIRC.
Please don't do this.
