1. Damn, that sounds huge!
2.
I would add not acting like a dick and pissing people off, and not dressing like the IT Department.
Absolutely. If he ever wonders why he's not more in demand, those might be two of the answers. If he ever wonders why Tal Wilkenfraud gets better gigs than he does, again, that might be two of the answers. At least she looks like she's enjoying herself, goofy as she looks. And then Rickey Minor kicks his arse (and everyone else's) when it comes to high profile work.
3. I watched RTF live last year. 2nd best gig I've ever seen! They're much better now than they were before (and I thought they were pretty good back then). Best gig I've ever seen was at Preservation Hall in New Orleans. So I guess that means I love jazz.
4. I like it. Don't take the lack of replies personally - most people don't bother with this sub-forum. Your vocals need some work. Start smoking 40 Marlboro Reds a day. Stand a foot away from the mic and try singing an octave lower. I can picture Axl on this.
5. I love the sound of Stingrays on late '70s records: Bernard Edwards and Louis Johnson are two of my absolute bass heroes. I've never managed to find one that I felt comfortable playing or that I could get that '70s sound out of.
6.
Having said that, I do practice to improve my playing and reading, and I am interested in theory, but I do it because I want to, not because anyone else says I should
You should never do anything just because someone else says you should. I had a music teacher at school who was a bit of a rebel. He told us to forget about theory and lessons to start with - just pick up an instrument and see how you get on. If it works for you then learn to play it. If it wasn't for that advice I wouldn't be a bassist or musician at all. I tried to pick up as much theory as possible along the way because I got frustrated at not knowing what note choices I had on tunes my friends were writing. It would have been a lot quicker and easier to do if I could read well. Music education should be a totally personal thing though. I have younger friends, bandmates and former bandmates who are doing music at uni. It's depressing how standard their friends' playing is and how their highest ambition is to play for someone like Jay-Z. Noone picks up a musical instrument to play behind Jay-Z. I also think it's disgraceful how little emphasis any of these institutions place on rhythm and melody. They spend all their time thinking about harmony - which is obviously important - but so many of them to play with a total lack of fluidity. One of the problems a lot of non-jazzers have with jazz is that many modern soloists think it's ok to try one idea, abandon it, pause, try something else, abandon it, pause, try something else, pause, think, squeak, run arpeggio practice patterns, give up.
7. Short-cut culture. That's all it is. "How can I get to where you are without having to put in any of the work you put in for all those years?" EDIT: I get that some people could learn as much theory as they like and still not be able to come up with an interesting line but I prefer having an idea of my options in a given musical situation to having to fumble around and stumble upon something that sounds cool.
8. Nice rig, nice bass and very nice pair of sunglasses!
9. That rig looks fantastic! Enjoy!
10. Just go right back to basics and practice the C major scale with every other note a ghost note. You should not be worrying about your right hand at all when you're playing ghost notes - your right hand does exactly the same thing whether it's a ghost note or a fully fretted note. So don't look at it or think about it.
11.
switchable rail voltage or variable number of tubes so you can get similar tube compression/break-up at quiet gigs as at loud ones
I know a few people who'd be interested in this.
12. Awesome! Looks like Sly on keys & BVs - but far too animated to be him, surely?
13. Warwick do the Buzzard which I think has two Ps - and the one at the bridge might be in reverse. Would be interesting to hear a J-P!
14. Sounds like quite a collection. The only embarrassment I see is an embarrassment of riches!
15.
i find that statement a little arousing! is that wrong? - the kate bush bit!
I'm worried. VERY worried!
16. Model the preamp section on the Aguilar DB680 and then just give me 2-400 Watts from the power amp section. The features you mention sound great btw!
17.
Did they have a bass player on gigs?
That's what I was wondering. I do know Rutherford had a twin-neck bass/guitar jobbie - Shergold, I believe. Decent guitarist and decent bassist. Wait, wasn't Rutherford bassist while Hackett was guitarist? I don't know my prog. I should be ashamed of myself.
18.
I wonder what would happen if Oasis ripped off Coldplay, and Coldplay ripped off Oasis - and this went on for a few months? - Would they share the Brit award?
Brilliant.
19.
. Blimeh, nice to see the OAP's are still kicking out and about playing live music, you look 50 years younger mate
Thanks. I've been on a strict diet of cocaine and 14-year old boys for the last 25 years!
20.
Do i think "forget it" sell up and give up or should i just hold out for a pub covers band to turn up just for the sake of playing?
Without wanting to get too Kate Bush on you, don't give up. I was so sickened after a band I was in fell apart that I stopped playing for 2 years. This was 19-21. And I've never practised like I did before. But I'm a much better player now and the band I'm in now is so much better than the one that fell apart. I got into writing, playing guitar, playing drums, playing keys, producing, put a band together (which again fell apart) and then put this one together. It's just a long-arse, depressing journey at times. But the playing's a part of who you are. You can try to deny it but you'll just end up acting weird in the rest of your life.
21. Pathetic. (Good call, OG)
22. Originals (and covers on long gigs). Funk, soul and rock n' roll.
23. Thanks for the post about cells and stacks, Mikey! Will try this soon.
24. http://www.myspace.com/mmivmusic You realise, to some old-fashioned people like me, your myspace address reads as "2004 music"
25. Wait a sec. You're not trying to mute with your right hand are you? You should be "muting" with your fretting hand - and I wouldn't even call it muting. You just don't fret the note fully.
