1.
wish i got a scratchcard won £1050 so i could get this + the petrol money ahah
Get scratching! With regards to splitting it from the flightcase - I'd rather keep it all together.
2. Head is ruling heart on this one I'm afraid. It deserves to be used.
3. *SOLD* American-made Ampeg SVT CL in absolutely mint condition up for grabs due to the fact I just don't use it, and even if I did it's way more than what I need. An amp this good deserves to go to a home where it'll get used. Bought in November from Pentode. I think Pentode bought it from a friend in the States. Been out of my apartment once - the band I was in fell apart over Xmas so I've no need for it anymore, aisde from as a completely ridonculous practice amp. It was converted to 240V by authorised Ampeg service agents, Panic Music, I assume when Pentode brought it over to the UK. Always flightcased and treated with respect. For the purpose of transparency it recently went caput. Got it checked out and it turns out there was a 3 amp fuse in the plug instead of a 10 amp fuse. Now sorted and works perfectly. Also had it serviced at the same time so everything is as good as new. If you'd like to come and take a look I'm in Peterborough Sunday-Thursday nights and have a Marshall VBC412 cab which you can test it through. Otherwise I'm in Barnsley, S.Yorks Friday and Saturday nights if that's closer. Although there's no bass or cab there, so you'd have to bring your own should you want to test it. Looking for £1000 EDIT for pics I'll get some pics on tonight, but here's the link to Pentode's For Sale thread which has pictures. Comes with power lead and ridiculously heavy duty 1/4 lead. PM if interested
4. So, what's the difference between a blade and a toaster. Different sound?
5. So I've had it in my possession for nearly a month now. I've not used it for a week or so because I've been fairly busy. Plugged everything in, pressed the power switch and left it to warm for a few minutes as always. Then when I pressed the standby switch there was a little flash of light that came out the back and it switched off. Now it won't work. I can't smell anything burning or owt - this is my first valve amp so I'm a bit stumped as to what it could be. Any help would be much appreciated.
6. Damn you Eric. If I'd not just splashed out on an Ampeg I'd snap this up straight away.
7.
Ah, I see. Im guessing youd have to be very loud to get it to break up. Thats one of the advantages I liked with the Orange amp; even at a low volume (practice volume) you can crank the gain right up and it breaks up nicely.
Yeah, I might change one of the preamp valves out for something that breaks up a little sooner.
8.
I agree, plus crank the amp til it breaks up a little. Can you keep the master down whilst cranking the gain? Ive not used an SVT-CL indepth to be honest, only had a few chances to test one. You are definitely on the right track!
The SVT CL doesn't break up as much as I'd like. Having said that playing over the bridge pick up helps, but I've never played in that position and I find it really odd.
9.
If the bass can't hint at it, then the cab wont do it either.. but maybe we have differents ideas of growl..
The bass definitely does hint at it. I just want a little more, is all.
10.
IMO, if you want an agressive growly tone, obviously its partly down to what bass you use (Jazz basses help) and having the amp just touching the 'break up' sound (if using a tube amp). Gallien's are well known for lots of growl, but obviously that doesnt help here. Personally, Id seek a 2x10 (x2) or 4x10. I find having the horn on the cab a little brings out that brightness a little. Depends on what you consider growl
Got a jazz bass - it's all I use at the minute. Amp is an Ampeg SVT CL, normally played with the gain all the way up. I've been looking at 2x10s but most of them are 8 ohms and the SVT is 4 or 2.
11.
Remember though that Geddy Lee's tone is down to far more than the speakers he uses (or indeed doesn't use!).
Oh yea I know that, I just mentioned that as most folk on here will know what I mean.
12. T'other week I bought Pentode's Ampeg SVT CL and it's brilliant. I'm currently using it with a Marshall VBC412 which I'll probably get rid of due to the awkward size. So I'm looking for something maybe a little smaller that has a lot more growl. More Geddy Lee-like if you will. There's so many cabs out there I'm just a bit stumped.
13. Will be keeping an eye on this as I'm also after something small and lightweight to pair up with my new SVT. Have you looked at Purple Chili? They do lightweight cabs and they look amazing
14. New Ampeg SVT CL courtesy of Pentode. Pure amazingness Sorry for the poo photo. I took it last night as soon as I got it home. Will get some better pics soon.
15. Bought Grahame's SVT CL. Enquired about it on the Monday. Was mine Tuesday night. Very nice chap, good bass player and easy to deal with.
16. I'm not so sure about the tidy bass playing. You put me to shame.
17. Hopefully selling my shiny motorcycle and currently considering replacing with this bump. Don't think it'll go too well round the corners, mind!
18. Just looking on the Matamp site. Are all the controls notched like the gain or are they smooth?
19. I'd love to participate in this thread but I have neither!
20. I joined the current band in February/March I think and gig-wise it's been the best yet. We've done five or six I think. Which doesn't sound many, but considering when I joined the guitarist was also new and the singer became a Dad in the summer I don't think we've done too bad.
