1. Ahoyhoy!
 2. Line out of the Ashdown, couple of mics in front (kick mic as well), and mix it. It's hard to get a room sound when you DI unless you monitor the room too. Try the micing!
 3.
Well, we are on a discussion forum, seems a shame not to take a point that was raised and discuss it.
Jaco > Entwistle (in my opinion) [I think I've done that right? haha] Jaco has been a far more influential player for me and most of the people I know, where as Entwistle is just more widely known (again, my opinion, I'm probably wrong haha.).
 4. I used a blues-breaker on my bass once, the bottom end suddenly disappeared. Guess the frequencies aren't made for bass.
 5. Tough question really because to some extent it's varies by style. For me, this makes a good bassist;

Locking in with the kick (and the snare where necessary).
Good knowledge of tunes.
Ability to improvise decently.
Good sight-reader.
Nice tone.
Not being an idiot!
That's pretty much it for me, haha.
 6.
At the risk of sounding ridiculously stupid... what's with the sponge? lovely pair of basses you have there !
The sponge means I don't get ringing strings when I don't want them (although muting should do it - I'm prone to accidentally hitting a string). I've found with any west end work, or even orchestra work, they want the more 'deadened' sound of a string. Bit like a double bass really. In regards to the motown sponge, it means I can 'try' and fail to sound like Jamerson!
 7. Well, the Yamaha was my first proper bass. For many months I played it with a shocking set up and had trouble slapping with it due to un-neccasary parts. 10 months ago I had her set up and had the bits removed. The set up is perfect and with the help of some foam/car sponge it sounds brilliant. The Fender was my second bass and remains my favourite, primarily due to the awesome sound it makes and the overall feeling. Again I went heavy handed with the sponge and I've made two custom fittings, one for motown and one for pit/session work. I've got two more basses coming along his month (hopefully), both of which are Precisions (one bring fretted, one being fretless). The fretted one is so I can learn to set up my own bass, once I've worked on that I'll be spending lots of money on it!
 8.
I am also thinking about going and I too will be heading up from Portsmouth in a reasonably large estate car so If you or anyone else wants to talk about getting together give me a shout. john
Cheers for the offer, however I've just persuaded my dad to drive me and he hasn't been up for a while so fancies it now! Currently I'll be potentially bringing the following; 2001 (ish) Fender Jazz 4-string. 2004 (ish) Yamaha RBX 775 5-string. Possibly; 1970's copy p-bass fretted (if I get the electrics working) &/or a p-bass fretless (if I get it). Might bring my HiWatt, but more likely to bring a combo (again if I've bought one). See you all there!
 9. Hey All, I'm really looking forward to coming to this, however I will be coming from Portsmouth. I won't need a bed for the night (as my dad owes me substantial '£££', so driving me up is only fair) but I would only be able to bring my amp head (HiWatt) unless I've bought a combo by this time. Will bring a couple of my basses and I look forward to meeting all of you! TK
 10. I read this earlier somewhere else and assumed it was a joke, this is awful! We're losing so many good guys at the moment, such a shame! RIP.
 11. Hey, Since getting my Jazz it's had rather.. disgusting.. pickups. As you'll see in the attached photo, they almost look rusty, however they're not rusty. How would I go about cleaning them up? Cheers, TK
 12. As long as you don't have the bass and/or pedal(s) up full, it'll be fine. I do it regularly. Just be careful!
 13. Up to the top! Seriously, no one interested?
 14. As I've mentioned in a few posts on here, I do artist development. For that I've got my own studio and I, in effect, produce peoples music and/or write stuff for them. Here's the really recent tune (pop as you like), this was written by myself but the song is for someone else; This Is Love Here's one I produced and did all the arrangement on (not written by me); Where You Are Finally, for anyone into dance music.. The Longest Road Remix!; The Longest Road I use a 2008 Macbook 2.4 duelcore 2GB - Logic 8 - Focusrite Saffire - and a cheapo studio mic!
 15. I think I just had a semi-mild heart attack at those prices.
 16.
Most people would ape that with two fingers today.
I don't think that's specifically true though. There are some motown lines which do not sit right without practising them (with two fingers), however with one finger you can nail them first time through. I'm in no way saying one finger is better than two though, I use both. I've just noticed some lines work substantially better with one finger than two. I may be completely wrong and a freak though so, ignore this if you wish.
 17. When I started studying heavily (3 years ago'ish) I wanted nothing more than to play sessions with people like Jamiroquai, Jay Z, Dizzie Rascal etc. I got taught by people who played with the big guns and it was something to aspire to, but unfortunately the spark died for me the day I went to a cattle call audition and saw all the competition. Recently I started to MD'ing, artist development and sessions for local studios. About two weeks ago I got a referral for some bigger work in London (via some local work) at which point I met the exact people who might be calling on me for future engagements. I can adapt to what ever style I need to, I can also sight-read to a very proficient level and have no problem with improvising. So, in that long winded story, yeah I could be.. I just can't do the big cattle call auditions. They're way too high pressure!
 18. I'm currently looking onto ordering a bass (new), a fretless jazz (75 re-issue). A tutor of mine reccomended buying it directly from the Ishibashi factory (or something around that name) as depending on the exchange rate you could get it brand new from as little as £350 including delivery. However, I can't track down any info the the factory but google suggests it does actually exist somewhere. Has anyone on here bought new directly from them? How did you go about it? Any help would be brilliant! TK Edit; I have found this (ebay), but it's second hand. Though it will only cost £500ish.
 19. When I first started playing bass I associated slap bass with Flea, after some actual time learning the instrument and researching players I soon realised 'King' is the 'King' of slap and always will be. Far FAR superior lines for me, also a much nicer tone. But that's me though.
 20.
just watched the funk brothers movie again tonight what a film!
You're making me want to watch it, but I can't find my DVD! :'(
 21. I've had over 10 years live playing experience on guitar (from age 9), at age 13 I got my Grade 8 Rockschool. I can teach any technique you could want! With bass I've been playing for some time too and I'm more than qualified to teach many different styles and techniques, even the theory side of things. £15 per half hour £27 for an hour Don't mind if you're a beginner or more advanced player. I can make sure you get what you want out of playing bass or guitar! Check out my website; www.tomkentmusic.co.uk. Contact info can be found here; http://www.tomkentmusic.co.uk/tk/temp.html Cheers! TK
 22.
There are only one or two brief shots in videos, AFAIK. There's this Marvin Gaye one: And this CBS News one: Alas, only fleeting glances in both. I've not seen anything aside from those.
Cheers for those, I hadn't seen them before! Think I'll be buying a pickup guard and a P-bass asap so I can start working on the exact playing style. However, I will need the same strings.. so anyone got some really really old flat wound (I think) strings?!
 23.
Is there any footage of Jamerson playing, showinghis amazing technique? I did a YouTube search once and only found photo stills set to music.
If I recall (according to one of my tutors), there is very very little video footage of his playing, I've only ever seen 20 second clips of him at a time too. Would be amazing if you could see a video of a whole tune with just his fretboard and right hand in view!
